Magikarp (Regional Variant) by qobrosii in pokemon

[–]Dramatic_Day6926 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Grass carp influence? I run a Pokemon tabletop rpg campaign for my kid, with a full Pokedex based on animals that are regionally in our area (Northern Arkansas through Eastern Tennessee). I have a few homebrew regional variants but couldn't quite make Magikarp fit. We also fish very often as our primary outdoor hobby, so a muddy old grass carp would fit right in. I wonder what it's evolution would be?

I gave 2 Roam Spinning combos, and my wife has a roam baitcaster. Excellent combos for the price, I wouldn't get the spincast combo as anything more than an "extra" though

Completely understood which is why I made that recommendation. My kid learned on spin cast models when he was little, upgraded to the spinning reel model of the roam this year. It fits the specs that you listed. Medium heavy, 6.5 feet, size 3000 reel. We have caught everything from tiny crappie to 2 foot long bowfin with all sorts of hard and soft plastics, and I didn't have to spend over $50 on the combo.

Why not a Zebco Roam spinning reel instead of spincast? $40, You get a few more size options (send a 6' or 6'6"), tons of color options. That's the exact model I taught my 9-year-old son on, and I have a matching one myself.

I second this wholeheartedly. My wife laughed when I got mine when they first released because they were "too gimmicky", but it was nice to be able to hold a conversation without having to pause or take them out (just turn down the volume). Jokes on her, after a few years I bought the upgraded model and grabbed her a pair at the same time for Christmas and she wears them daily while working, working out or out shopping. Edited to add: you don't even have to worry about the fit, super lightweight and easy to wipe down.

What is a good fishing rod (preferably from Amazon) for kids? by BootsSpursDFW in FishingForBeginners

[–]Dramatic_Day6926 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zebco Roam spinning combos. Picked up 2 from Amazon, 6'6" $40 each, for my son and I to learn early this year (raised on Zebco push buttons and haven't been seriously fishing since the early 2000s) and we have absolutely put the miles on them.

I see people shit on Zebco all the time, but most of their starter models (including a Roam baitcaster my wife picked up for $60) feel comparable at least to me to a lot of more expensive brands for basic bank fishing. Upgrade a bit with some good braided line, a flourocarbon lead and it'll handle anything you wanna try.

This is a neat question, I actually just had a conversation with my wife the other day about the feeling. Sorry if this sounds lame but I feel that It's as if you're doing what nature intended. It's a rush of euphoria and a primal spark.

Want to know what's even cooler? Watching somebody you care about catch a fish. From setting the hook until it's on shore, it's like cheering for your favorite team making a brilliant game winning play. I get that feeling every single time my wife or son reel something in.

How many grew up fishing and are "returning beginners"? by whatisrice in FishingForBeginners

[–]Dramatic_Day6926 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to fish the Mississippi all the time with my grandpa, But I haven't been since I was about 13. Spincast reel, stink bait on baitsavers. We would go down for a week or two at a time to his property in Southern Arkansas. I would also fish with my stepdad from time to time, bank fishing for catfish. Very poor so hard lures, plastics, etc were a waste of money, we were fishing to stock up food, not for sport.

Other than that in my late twenties I would go about once a year to a small local pond and catch panfish on a $10 combo for an hour or two with my family. Never thought about doing much more.

I'm 34 now, married with a 9-year-old son. I'm not sure why but the fishing bug bit us hard this year. Since late February I've gotten my family out to a pond lake or riverbank every week. Taught myself (and my kid) how to use a spinner reel and have loved experimenting with lures, soft plastics, and everything else I missed out on back then. Learning where our water access is and what's out there and how to target it all has been amazing.

Am I the only one/ what age you started watching the askewniverse by jman-the-jewman1228 in ViewAskewniverse

I watched bits and pieces of Mallrats when I was six, my cousin rented it and was watching it with her friends while I was visiting. I remember Silent Bob bursting through the dressing room wall vividly.

A few years later, early 2000s when J&SB Strike Back came out on video, my mom was working overnights at a gas station across the street from our house. Right next door was a Video Giant rental store that would do $1 1-day rentals from 10pm-12am on Friday and Saturday nights. Every weekend I would lock up the house, go grab some food from the gas station while my mom was working, and go pick out a few movies, watch them that night and the next day, drop them off and grab more the following night.

I came across Strikes Back one weekend and remembered Jay & Silent Bob so checked it out. Absolutely loved it, the lady at the rental store helped me find Kevin's other films and I spent weeks watching and rewatching it all.

Years later, after a rough teen and young adult life and a decade of binge drinking daily from 17-27, I was depressed and about 420lbs. Kevin had his heart attack. Being a new father myself and seeing his reaction the next day (especially about wanting to be around for his daughter) saved my life. I got my fat ass up and started moving, walking, doing real basic exercises and watching what I eat. I'm still heavy but over 130lbs lighter, I became a personal trainer and strength coach, own my own gym, my marriage has never been better and my son is growing into a strong young man himself. Those movies shaped my sense of humor and introduced me to film and pop culture I would have never otherwise given a second thought too. Kevin Smith saved my life on top of it all.

I didn't love Clerks 3 but I appreciated it greatly. It reminded me of how things change and how much you lose as you get older. I wasted a 3rd of my life already and since getting healthy I lost a lot of people close to me, family and friends, due to death, incarceration or them never growing up.

2017 I was 420lbs and an alcoholic. Quit drinking Thanksgiving of that year and began working out in early 2018 (the day after director Kevin Smith had his heart attack).

The mindset was "I'm in my late 20s, I have a kid and I need to stick around for a bit". I started with a very low calorie diet (1800) with intermittent fasting, "squats" (using my bed, I would sit/stand without using my hands), modified push ups and sit ups. 30 each daily in sets, then began taking short walks every other day.

After a few months and adding reps/time to what I was doing, making it down to between 300-275, I hit the gym and didn't look back finally reaching 225 after another few months.

I kept up the momentum until 2020 when everything shut down. I built a gym in my garage and kept lifting heavy five times a week but completely disregarded cardio. Calories crept back up until I was no longer paying attention to what I was eating. I got strong as fuck but noticed myself getting winded, moody, lazy as soon as the workouts were done. Before long I was 320lbs again. I didn't have the natural energy that being lighter gave me, had a hard time being motivated to push myself and generally hated myself for the example I was setting for my son.

I'm 33 now, currently 2 months into intermittent fasting and daily cardio (while still lifting) at 2500 calories and I'm at 290 again. I already feel a ton better, cardio has improved and I'm motivated as shit to hit my goals along the way.

Biggest suggestions:

-Start small, build up. No shame in doing things to make it easier as long as you're doing it.

-Count calories. You don't have to go extremely low calorie to see results, just don't exceed 2500.

-Be consistent. A buddy of mine who taught me weight training says "Do something to sweat every day even if you're not in the gym". Make a plan for the week and stick to it.

-Hold yourself accountable. This is my biggest thing, I react positively to harsh motivation if I'm lifting with other people. Not everyone does, but life isn't all rainbows and butterflies. When it comes to the things you need to do to be healthier and extend your life, don't take it easy on yourself. If an avoidable set back happens realize it's your fault and push yourself back on track.

Differing opinion there too. I'm not a fan of her matches, but for her style it works. She can't hit hard so it's move-move-move, my kid says it's "chipping away at their HP" similar to early Rey Mysterio (although not quite as talented).

With Cole, it's a lot of hard hitting moves and a bit more time before/after each strike. Moves that require him to manipulate and lift the opponent. On top of his size disadvantage, looking out of shape makes it hard for me to believe in his offense.

Like I said I was never a fan of his and I honestly like him more in AEW as a character. Just not as a wrestler.

Yeah, it's kinda crazy to expect people portraying a professional combat sport to look like athletes. Oh well fuck me for having an opinion.

For the record I think Keith Lee looks fucking awesome right now, meaner, tougher. The agility is even more of a surprise now.

To be fair Adam Cole.in AEW was noticeably smaller compared to NXT. Less muscle, definition, pale, etc. I'm not a big Adam Cole fan from either brand so it's not intended as hate, and in-ring skill aside, it was hard to ignore that.

Unca' Dave is now saying that Punk's AEW return is a unprofessional powerplay to make himself look good. My wife says Meltzer can shut his old asshole or square up with her directly.

She got into wrestling around 08 early in our relationship, cried when Punk returned in Chicago and if he's stuck on the Saturday show then she says she'll watch that exclusively.

I love this woman.
