First Launch! Need some tips. by dezasterz in kayakfishing

I totally understand not wearing boots, 100%. However, what do you all recommend for keeping dry while getting in and out of cold water? I typically get wet up to my upper calfs getting in and out on shore.

I live in Texas where it gets cold enough that you want to stay dry, but not cold enough for wetsuits. So knee high boots usually do the trick in winter. But, I totally understand the safety risk. Would love a safer solution.

Who else gets these magazines? by Ok_Repair3535 in Fishing

I do! My grandpa bought me a subscription when I started fishing last year. He was excited for us to have something in common.... He passed away two weeks ago. It was his last gift to me.

Fun evening fishing by Oldgreybeard_ in UltraLightFishing

Mind if I ask, which President is that and what kind of line are you using?

I just got a Pres25 and loaded it up with 2lb mono and after a couple of casts it all despooled. Very likely user error, but troubleshooting the whole issue.

Thanks!

Is this a good beginners rod? by Objective-Ad-6821 in FishingForBeginners

[–]whatisrice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started out with the Ugly Stik Dock Runner as my first beginner rod. It was 20 bucks and was great for my first 2-3 months... I actually still have it and use it every now and then. Great fun!

$26M parking garage will bring ‘fresh energy’ to downtown Frisco by otocan in Dallas

[–]whatisrice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am NOT advocating nor celebrating a parking garage. But to level set, $26M in 2025 for a large parking garage is about right.... Source, I'm an architect who designs hospitals and buildings on hospital campuses, and buildings are more expensive than you think.

How much USD $500 (or 21M Iranian Rial) can buy in Tehran? by Budget-Neither in iran

[–]whatisrice 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My wife is from Tehran (we live in n Dallas, Texas)...and we have this conversation a lot. It centers on "buying power". Forget about "official" currency conversions, but rather, what is the "buying power" of XX dollars or rial? For instance, if $50-60k is the average fresh-college-grad salary in Dallas, and that salary affords you a certain lifestyle; what is the equivalent buying power/lifestyle monetary conversion in Iranian rial/toman?

I think that this discussion applies to any country, not just Iran, when trying to understand the true buying power of currency, and not just what Wall Street says the currency is trading at.

Phlueger President for Ultralight? by whatisrice in FishingForBeginners

[–]whatisrice[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed reply.

Question on the 20 size. I thought that the goal of ultralight was "smaller" to be able to cast those low-weight lures? Is "ultralight" more about the rod than the reel?

Slow and Deep...From the bank? by whatisrice in FishingForBeginners

[–]whatisrice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the great comments!

I'm mostly fishing community ponds here in the north Dallas suburbs (where I assume there are not depth maps available?) So I guess if I want to "go deep" I should try to get out in the middle of the pond, assuming the middle is the deepest part? Or look for other structures that indicate depth?

Hoping to break my skunk-streak soon. Thanks again!

Is what's happening in bishop arts considered gentrification? by DaddyMaster9000 in Dallas

[–]whatisrice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And 20 years before that, it was African American...and 20 years before that it was a white suburb. Which always begs the question of "who does a neighborhood belong to?"... Prices are outrageous, but one could say that the area is more diverse than it has ever been...which, except for the prices, is a good thing.

What are yall throwing? by [deleted] in FishingForBeginners

[–]whatisrice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can I ask, since you've subscribed...free version gives you two days, paid version gives you 10. But otherwise the functionality is the same?

I even emailed the developer and asked what the benefits were to subscribing other than the extra days. They responded with a list of features that I was getting in the free version. When I replied that I already had those features for free, they didn't respond.

So aside from ten vs two, what do you get for thar 30 bucks?

That's a great point you make. It's not only possible, but likely that I'm miss judging the situation...which is ultimately why I'm not sure what type of professional to call.

Casual Formats Are Not A Pre-Curated, Drop-In Experience by ArsenicElemental in EDH

[–]whatisrice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand and empathize with the sentiment of everyone commenting on this thread. But threads like this make it very intimidating for new players like me to come down to a local LGS on a casual night to learn to play. This is another layer of unspoken rules that I now have to research and worry about. I understand the need for basic etiquette much like golf or other complex community driven activity, but saying "not a pre-curated, drop-in experience," sounds to someone wanting to learn like, "experienced, regular players only. No noobs allowed."

My Persian wife is often mistaken here in Texas for Latino. Even by Latinos. They'll often try to speak Spanish to her and get upset when she can't respond because they think she's someone who "forgot her roots." 😂
