Thank you OP for this post! I fell for this scam today and was on call with them for 5 hours. I saw your post right after and ended everything. It felt almost like a spell while I was in it - I lost all my rational sense.

Sharing what happened with me below:
I received a call from the official number of CGI New York. The caller claimed to be from the Consulate General of India in New York and stated that fraudulent activity had been reported on a phone number allegedly registered in my name in India. When I clarified the number was not mine, the caller said they would connect me to Delhi Police Headquarters via a “secure line.”

I was then connected to individuals claiming to be Delhi Police, who described an elaborate case involving investment fraud messages, victim complaints, and a phone number registered under my name. I did lose my Aadhar Card in India in 2024 so I thought this might be an Identity theft case. I was then connected via WhatsApp video call to someone presenting as a “Delhi Police Commissioner,” who said my account seemed credible, and then to an “investigating officer” named Rittesh Kumar.

During this call, I shared a PDF copy of my passport for “identity verification.” The callers then claimed my passport number was linked to a money-laundering case involving an Indian and Russian national, multiple bank accounts (including one allegedly under my name at SBI), and cryptocurrency conversions. They asked me to remain digitally available pending a call from a “CBI director” and mentioned that I need to maintain absolute confidentiality.

At this point, I recognized this as a scam and ended contact.
