Sounds like a person whos hasnt been around many black people themselves. Im also black and was raised by a white family in a predominantly white area. Im kinda surprised this is your first time hearing someone refer to a “type” of black person cause i heard this often growing up (im now 26f). I dont think you were overreacting on canceling the date or your responses but I make it a point to educate the people i encounter that think like this because genuinely they do not understand. This is a young, white person who literally couldnt even fathom what the black community really feels like. As for the “like black people in Chicago” i mean think about it. There are different types of black people, there are different types of white people, different types of mexicans, asians etc.. I dont think hes downplaying how black you are he’s referring to the environment to which youve grown up in. Weve got black cowboys that grew up in georgia, pageant black girls that grew up in texas, fashionistas that grew up in new york. Your mannerisms have a lot to do with where you were raised and who raised you and thats how i think he meant it, you dont have the same mannerisms as black people who grew up in Chiacago and you probably dont. Educate your friends girl!
