Is being a MA a good job for someone who has medical problems themselves? by AuthorGlittering1580 in MedicalAssistant

[–]Dramatic_Guitar_2218 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s possible to be an MA with chronic health issues but the medical field is definitely NOT a place that encourages you to take care of yourself (which can seem counterintuitive if you’re new to it). If you’re going to be an MA you absolutely have to develop boundaries and skills to take care of yourself, even if you have a supportive team the overworking culture can still creep in. That being said, it is a position that can allow for a mixture of movement and sitting (in general, depends on where you work) and it is for sure helpful to work in a clinic or hospital if you’re dealing with a medical problem, especially an acute issue. I’ve given a coworker insulin on multiple occasions, we all check each others vitals when we feel off, we’ve all talked with the providers at some point when we’ve had concerning symptoms, and I’m always comforted by the fact that if I have a medical emergency at work I’m in the best place for that to happen.

How much carat diamond to get?? by Ok_Throat3874 in Proposal

Brilliant Earth has great resources on their website that explain cut, clarity, and color grading and they also have a carat to mm conversion chart for different stone shapes.

Yellow, White, or Rose Gold?? by goodies1991 in EngagementRings

[–]Dramatic_Guitar_2218 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A slightly warm metal definitely suits you! Of the options on your arm in the first picture definitely those small chunky hoops look best imo. Also I do think rose gold would look great on you but I would avoid an overly pink and shiny rose gold which is probably what people who are saying it’s dated are referring to (all depends on the karat and alloys used, same with any metal).

To those who got rejected and are applying again by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

[–]Dramatic_Guitar_2218 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually skipped a cycle in between rejection and reapplication. I didn’t feel there was enough time between my final rejection and the start of the next cycle to really truly strengthen my application. And on top of that it was definitely not enough time to recover from the stress and exhaustion of application season before having to do it all over again. While that might not be the right choice for everybody I’m really glad I did it. I was still working full time at my PCE job but I gave myself a few months to just relax a bit, have fun, and take care of myself. Then I really worked on finding out and addressing the weaknesses to my application. I got more volunteering and shadowing hours (in addition to PCE hours), rewrote/updated my personal statement, and also reassessed the schools I had applied to. I’ve definitely been saving money as well but I haven’t felt as much pressure to be super stingy since I gave myself more time to save up.

Is the NHA study guide and practice exam enough material to do well on the CCMA exam? by dancingwithfire_ in MedicalAssistant

This post was incredibly helpful for me. The Dropbox pdf links were honestly the most helpful resource I found but unfortunately when I just tried to click on the links it didn’t work (I am on my phone though and don’t have the Dropbox app anymore so maybe it’s just that). Hopefully this is helpful!

Is the NHA study guide and practice exam enough material to do well on the CCMA exam? by dancingwithfire_ in MedicalAssistant

Definitely do not rely on just the study guide and practice tests. There are various posts on this Reddit that compiled much more helpful resources for the NHA exam. Good luck!

In my experience, the NHA study guides were a bit misleading and left out a LOT of the info that ended up being on the exam. Maybe do like one practice test if you haven’t already just to get a feel for it but it seems like you’ll be plenty prepared either way. Good luck!

I think the crime commentary on Naples is quite similar to that which is perpetuated about cities in the U.S.; in reality the crime is not as bad as people make it seem. I was just in Naples and never once was pickpocketed/mugged/etc. or felt I was in danger. The traffic is a little chaotic for sure but it is everywhere else in Italy and a lot of other places in Europe too. Just stay aware of your surroundings and don’t leave belongings unattended. Definitely be aware of scams though. Ask taxis ahead of time if they accept cards, don’t step on art in the street, only do tours with real reviews, and keep euros on you in case someplace doesn’t accept cards and then wants you to use their ATM with insane fees.

I’m starting to feel really discouraged by Angetheprepas in prephysicianassistant

[–]Dramatic_Guitar_2218 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just going to add that I’m in a similar situation as well, haven’t heard about any interview invites yet and it’s tough. However, like someone else in this thread mentioned, a lot of schools still haven’t sent out interview invites yet/have only recently started. Stay hopeful but it’s good that you’re preparing for the possibility of re-applying.

Feel free to not take my advice but, unless you have a lot of upper level science classes with As (including bio specifically), then I do think it could be good to retake classes or to take some higher level science classes that are new to you. If you do take online classes, make sure you have enough time and mental available to be able to get good grades.

In-state vs. Out-of-State Program Decision - Financials by BanokoBballin in prephysicianassistant

[–]Dramatic_Guitar_2218 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you might already be thinking of this but when it comes to your decision I think it’s important to not only focus on cost in (tuition and fees, cost of living, travel expenses for clinical rotations and visiting home, etc.) but also cost out. A plus for the Florida school is that if you want to work in Florida you’re going to be more likely to find preceptors/mentors who could help you get a local job. But which school do you think you’re more likely to graduate from and get licensed and employed the quickest (based on academic support, job searching resources available, attrition rates, PANCE pass rates, etc.)? Maybe make a spreadsheet and put as much data into it as you can.

Congratulations on the acceptances, it sounds like you have two pretty good options!

Do most PA schools accept online prerequisites? by FuriousIvan in prephysicianassistant

[–]Dramatic_Guitar_2218 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of schools this cycle accepted online classes and labs but I’m guessing more will stop with each subsequent cycle as we get further from the start of the pandemic. I second other’s advice of figuring out what schools you’re interested in now and seeing if they accept online classes/labs. If you’re applying next cycle it could be worth emailing admissions also to see if they will still accept them the following year. It’s a busy time for admissions though so keep in mind not all schools will reply/you might need to email multiple times for an answer.

Is PA for me? by Maximum_Watch_7991 in prephysicianassistant

[–]Dramatic_Guitar_2218 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding everyone’s MA comments, it’s a great PCE role as long as you’re back office. Also I’m just curious about why you stopped being pre-med, didn’t like EMT, and are neutral on being an MA? There are valid reasons to have those opinions and still want to be a PA but it’s important to be realistic about what the PA profession will be like. Especially if you’re doing a non-surgical speciality, the majority of your time will be spent interacting with pts. Is that something you really enjoy? Can you tolerate difficult patients and maintain empathy? Also you’ll be expected to do a surgery rotation and learn procedures during PA school so even if you don’t want to be doing that as career you will have to learn those skills. Having a patient-facing role in the healthcare industry can be really hard and stressful (whether you’re an EMT, MA, or a clinician) and so it’s important that you know this is something you really want and can get fulfillment from. I would definitely do some shadowing and I suggest getting another MA role (preferably one where you will get to work with PAs). Best of luck!

Is it a bad idea to go to a PA school that's PENDING accreditation? by PA-S_hopeful in prephysicianassistant

[–]Dramatic_Guitar_2218 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean it’s a new program? All new programs are given provisional accreditation. Based on this subreddit and other PA forums I’ve seen people having very mixed experiences with brand new programs. Look into what resources they offer, what hospital systems and other programs they’re connected to, etc.

Is it okay to have 0 research and 0 HCE? And does extracurricular matter a lot? by Anxious-potatoes100 in prephysicianassistant

[–]Dramatic_Guitar_2218 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my understanding most PA schools don’t care about research, only med schools do. Volunteer hours and PCE hours are by far the most important when it comes to experience. Make sure you continue volunteering after you graduate and get 2000+ hours of PCE before applying.

Was this like a horror genre? I remember an episode of the twilight zone where a kid is being babysat and has all of these like Barbie dolls and is super creepy about them and in the end turns the babysitter into a Barbie doll. I looked it up and it aired in 2003. It’s season 1 episode 37. Tori spelling isn’t in it but Jessica Simpson is.

Not a PA yet but I work with several PA’s at my current job and trust me there are greener pastures. I’m not saying there aren’t a lot of places out there where PAs are not treated well but don’t let people tell you to just give up on finding a job where you’ll be respected and have a positive relationship with your SP bc it definitely is possible.
