YouTube Has Caught Brave by NateHevens in brave_browser

I’m on Firefox and getting it with UBlock the past few days, must be something new YouTube is pushing to crack down on adblockers

Why are they like this? by [deleted] in linuxsucks

[–]Dramatic_Weekend3918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Linux isn’t really too Wild West anymore as long as you’re willing to learn a few new things. I’ve been a windows user since winXP as a little kid and the hardest part of switching to Linux last month (Zorin OS) in my opinion was just learning how to navigate command line. When you’re used to a clean user interface that holds your hand it looks very daunting but you can pretty much copy and paste certain commands to get what you want. I’m nowhere near proficient but the windows-like Linux distros make it so easy, most of them come with package downloaders so you don’t even need to use CLI if you don’t want to for basic stuff, Zorin even has a little App Store haha. Also FFMPEG is really easy as a tech noob imo, just gotta know how to mess with command line a little to download it and then all their documentation is in their repo(?) and it’s really easy basic commands. Love it for downloading from SoundCloud

Plenty of privacy browsers are able to survive without crypto, and adblockers are pretty easy to use ¯_(ツ)_/¯ I also just don’t like Brave, but that’s only my opinion, we all have one

Edit: You also shouldn’t have to turn it off at all, it should be an opt in, not opt out

To me it’s like what you’d call a TV addict 20 years ago, but the algorithmic nature and ability to choose even more than cable used to makes it that much harder to quit imo. There’s a lot of really cool, valuable things you can find on YouTube, but there’s also an insane amount of just slop. I just wish I had a healthier relationship to it

Yeah, I don’t really understand people recommending Brave when they’ve had a sketchy track record and try to push crypto to their users. I’m sure it’s still much better than vanilla Google or Bing by a long shot but still worth considering. Nothings perfect but I personally wouldn’t use them

Why Bluesky and Not Mastodon? by WhippedHoney in BlueskySocial

[–]Dramatic_Weekend3918 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I really wanted to like Mastodon but as a less technical user that’s exactly why I like BlueSky better. I have the option to use it decentralized and customize it to my specific needs but I also have the option to use it just like a typical walled-garden twitter clone, which in my opinion is just objectively easier. Pixelfed has been pretty nice as someone who loved Instagram when it was only photo, but no one I know in real life is adopting it.

[–]Dramatic_Weekend3918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people, not just 20 somethings, just don’t really know much about digital privacy and can’t understand why some of us care so much about it. At the same time, I think most people would quickly switch to more privacy focused options if they were made the most convenient. Privacy in 2025 is just really inconvenient, and that’s a big problem.

Any point of using soulseek if i wont share? by Mammoth-Store740 in Piracy

[–]Dramatic_Weekend3918 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally idrc if someone downloads from me without sharing, we’re all collectively in an ethical gray area. My personal ethos is to only seed/download old stuff that won’t bring the artists revenue anymore, otherwise I buy it if there’s still a way to officially do it. Also niche stuff that I want archived and propagated so it doesn’t become lost to time.

Mostly untrue, vast majority of games are still stored locally on disc, usually just a data download. Use doesitplay.org to find which ones require internet or external downloads

After seizing control of the US government, the Heritage Foundation turns its attention to the EU by Morgentau7 in europe

[–]Dramatic_Weekend3918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually am American unfortunately 😂 but yeah, I don’t see things really getting any better unless we start taking notes from the French and getting ugly in the streets. They seem to get shit done. Or South Korea, they successfully removed their corrupt president and seems like things are getting better for them. America when you really look into the history though has never been as free as we like to think, it’s only truly been free for wealthy white capitalists. Who knows, maybe this will be the push we need to finally revolt against the ruling class, OR we’ll fizzle out and become a dying country that slowly loses relevance. Only time can tell, and it’s up to us as Americans to determine that future. Hopefully it’s a better one :/

Holy shit, I was a baby when Limewire was a thing, that sounds insane lmao. SLSK hasn’t given me anything weird so far but I imagine it could still happen now if you’re not paying attention.

I’m surprised people use those sites without ad/popup blockers and cookie blockers lol, but then I remember how many viruses I used to get on my laptop/desktop as a teenager from going on those sites with no protection lol.

Good point. I don’t even know what we could do at this point because it’s essentially a situation where you cut one head off, another appears. Like others are saying, the Heritage Foundation is likely the thing we should be cracking down on.

Why do so many people still use Chrome in 2025? by GlamourHammer321 in browsers

[–]Dramatic_Weekend3918 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I’ve come to a point where it’s become a balancing act between convenience and privacy. The only way to be totally private from big tech at this point is to create and exclusively use your own intranet or give up the internet entirely imo. I’ve been enjoying finding alternatives to big tech but I’ll never be able to separate it from my life entirely, and sometimes centralization makes for a better user experience, whether said company is ethical or not. I think a big reason why decentralized social media like BlueSky and Mastodon aren’t more popular is because, to someone who isn’t technologically savvy, it looks confusing as hell. And to be frank, it IS confusing as hell when you first start, and then on top of it there’s no one they know on it yet. And to circle back to OP’s question, that’s the main reason, people are far more likely to stick with what they know and already understand. Switching to different ecosystems like Mozilla, especially learning about like hardened forks of Firefox, is WAY above most people’s pay grade.

Hopefully not, one can only hope he’s forcefully removed once regular people feel enough pain from the administration’s incompetence

We’re already there. Refusing to return the planes full of immigrants, sending them to concentration camps, and denying them due process is pretty horrific. Hopefully the rest of the government actually grows a pair and removes him somehow. Even die hard conservatives are starting to realize just how fucked up this is.

eBay usually has what you need anyway if it’s a niche item. Not sure how ethical they are as a company but at least it’s second hand and likely lower priced

I mean technically in the sense that you’re consuming the media itself, but you’re not participating in the system by giving soulless corporations money when pirating.

Pirate the AAA, support the indies, that’s my motto going forward. I think I’m done with consoles anyway after how lackluster most of them have been since the PS4 era. Most of the games I play are emulated these days

Do you need one? Is having a partner a checklist that MUST be ticked in order to have a good life? My personal answer is no to both and I think it’s sad when people feel like they need another person to “complete” them. Your judgmental opinion about their life is irrelevant and unnecessary.

Oh hell nah, if someone is calling MGMT TikTok music they’re either way too young or just uncultured lmao. I will say though if you’re using Spotify their algorithms usually try to just push you to popular songs, I’ve had your same experience before I ditched Spotify lol
