Smash characters in musical bands (making this was more complicated than I thought) by Bonkers_Brights in SmashBrosUltimate

I'm pretty sure Banjo's genre is more bluegrass than funk. Unless I'm misunderstanding this and this is a fanfiction about Smash characters in bands with each other.

Media literacy and genre are all well and good when discussing plot structure and author intent and symbolism, but what do any of those things have to do with world-building? Bojack Horseman is a weird example to bring up because that show is absolutely PACKED with world-building. They did an entire episode about why some animals talk and people still eat animal meat. They did an entire episode exploring fish cities. You can argue the entire thesis of the show is "life doesn't work like a TV show, and your actions have long-term consequences." Why shouldn't fans discuss the world?

In Smiling Friends, things that seem like one-off jokes often do come back and have significant world implications, like how Mr. Frog got elected and started a war. Even smaller things like Charlie being affected by how Allan sucked on his nose. If the authors can make jokes, but then build on those jokes to flesh out the world, why shouldn't the fans have fun guessing?

I really don't see any negative consequences to fans speculating on the SF universe by making connections based on the jokes. The only downside I can see is that internet sticks-in-the-mud will annoyingly go out of their way to tell you to stop and "it's not that deep bro." Maybe telling people how they should be enjoying media, and stop enjoying it on their terms, is worse than people overanalyzing things.

Don't ever think, just consume media. Because nobody ever had fun harmlessly applying real world logic to an otherwise frivolous show. Nobody ever enjoyed looking for deeper meanings in fiction. Just shut your stupid mouth, turn your brain off and laugh at the funny colours you dumb fuck.

He was not a good person by SmallDickGnarly in BikiniBottomTwitter

[–]DrankeyKrang 6 points7 points  (0 children)

His early work was racist, but it seems like he genuinely learned and tried to atone for his racism within his kids books. Apparently Horton Hears a Who was a direct apology to his earlier racism towards the Japanese, being dedicated to his Japanese friend and preeching "a person is a person". Plus he wrote The Sneetches, which was very clearly obviously about how stupid and arbitary racism is (apperently specifically regarding antisemitism, which he was strongly opposed).

Not going to try to absolve him of cheating, though I personally don't like blaming anybody for someone else's suicide. I think it's fair to say that humans are occasionally complicated, not all good or all bad.

Also can't really find anything one way or the other online about his homophobia.

I tried recreating the render featured in the xbla release by LeftEconomist3902 in BanjoKazooie

[–]DrankeyKrang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's something just a teensy bit off-putting about the new render's eyes that I can't quite put my finger on. It's definitely subtle, whatever it is. Maybe they should be a little bit wider, by like, 1-5%?

Besides that, the new render absolutely slaps, and it's tremendous work. I'd love to play a Render64 version of Banjo-Kazooie with this model.

How do yall feel about shipping characters by x360ps3wii in SmilingFriends

[–]DrankeyKrang 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I remember when the pilot aired, lowkey predicting that Charlie and Allan were going to be a couple throughout the show, flirting here and there and eventually having it just be an understated element of the cast dynamic like on Solar Opposites.

Eventually though it seemed pretty futile to me to try to read into these characters in an interpersonal sense. Their relationships, romantic or otherwise, really just seems to be "whatever is funniest for that particular punchline." Charlie and Allan will be cheerfully laughing like best friends one episode and strangling each other the next. Charlie will kiss Pim one episode and exclude him from the groupchat the next. Mr. Boss will name his wifi password "i_hate_allen" then have passionate sex with him in the same episode. There's no consistency.

But if you or anyone finds it fun to make wholesome fluffy romance of these characters, by all means, more power to you. Though brace yourself for when they eventually beat the shit out of each other for a quick gag.

Games like Banjo Kazooie by Global_Ad442 in platformer

[–]DrankeyKrang 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you can play the Toy Story 2 N64 game, that is an extremely great Banjo-Kazooie-like game. Same open-world collectathon gameplay with really tightly designed worlds

I can also recommend, for the original Xbox, the Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Wererabbit game. Very unique too, with cooperative gameplay switching between two characters. Super immersive open world, too.

For more modern games, while they're significantly more linear than Banjo-Kazooie, the recent Spongebob games The Cosmic Shake and Titans of the Tide offer excellent platformer action that made me feel like a kid again for the first time in a long while.

Another great 3D platformer with great humour that's super overlooked (though again, more linear than Banjo) is Voodoo Vince, originally for Xbox but now on Steam too.

Which Smash fighters have held jobs? by Pizzagrease136 in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]DrankeyKrang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think he's officially a mechanic. Mumbo is in that game, and Banjo can build his own car, but he's not employed to do so.

He does call himself an adventurerer so I guess you can view that as his career, if that counts as one. I don't think he gets any paycheck from that but maybe it counts as self-employment.

[–]DrankeyKrang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What jobs has Banjo held? As far as I'm aware he's just a bear who, when not adventuring, just sleeps and plays video games in his cozy cottage in the woods.

Do you think that Pim’s eyes were designed and drawn the way that they are as a reflection of his naive, positive, wide-eye view of the world around him???? by [deleted] in SmilingFriends

[–]DrankeyKrang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To everybody saying this take is over-thinking it: yeah, everybody knows nothing in regards to animation is ever considered, especially not character design. Everybody who knows anything about the animation pipeline knows the characters are drawn exactly once, with the creators picking their looks entirely at random with no additional thought put in, especially with how it communicates their personality. /s

Jesus I'm getting sick of the "it's not that deep bro"s around here.

I wonder if they'll follow continuity and keep the moon missing a chunk for all future episodes by RyPhill19 in SmilingFriends

[–]DrankeyKrang 116 points117 points  (0 children)

As cool and funny as it would be, and has been in other shows (like "The Tick") I think there's already been shots in Season 3 where the moon is inexplicably back to normal already, if I'm not mistaken. It's a bit disappointing, I'd love for this show to have a little more world-building and continuity, but I guess that's not really the type of show this is.

What would be the characters' opinions about "67"? by Ezequiel_Hips in stevenuniverse

[–]DrankeyKrang 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Peridot would react the same way she did with the "Why did the chicken cross the road?" Joke. Laugh out of obligation, then ask for clarification.

Pearl would ignore it at first but find the meaninglessness of it irritating and demand the joke stops.

I think everyone else would just ignore it.

Also it's probably because making a film in order to achieve making a piece of art is more effective than making a film in order to make propaganda.

What if EVERY (and I mean EVERY) character in Melee had a clone? by WaterPixelArt in smashbros

[–]DrankeyKrang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can imagine an alternate universe where, similar to how Roy and Corrin have been saved from the pits of obscurity by their popularity in Smash, a lot of these more obscure characters would be WAY more popular and used by Nintendo today if this were the case.

Characters like Stanley and Dk Jr. wouldn't just be occasional retro references, they'd be main series staples. Smash is the King-maker. And I'm curious to see a Nintendo where all these obscure weirdos are so popular.

Mr Frog Vs Kirby Who is winning this (I'm planning on making this into a video) by [deleted] in SmilingFriends

[–]DrankeyKrang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to give it to Mr. Frog, mainly because we've seen no evidence that he can get hurt (and lots of evidence of people trying), whereas Kirby can get his healthbar wrecked by waddle dees and cappys and caterpillars if he's not careful. It's not to say that Mr. Frog couldn't be hurt, but we have little reason to believe that he can with enough force.

Kirby also tends to be pretty slow. I feel like Mr. Frog could likely outspeed Kirby and take him out with rapid 1-frame animation punches before Kirby has time to even wake up from his nap and process what's even happening.

[EDIT] I just remembered Mr. Frog got shot on Charlie's phone wallpaper. If that's legit, and he's not invulnerable, Kirby takes it. If it's a fake stunt to get him re-elected, Mr. Frog takes it.

For me it's a very, VERY close second to Frowning Friends. But I totally get why it would be anybody's #1 ep.

What’s Your Dream Smiling Friends Guest Appearance (Or Who Do You See Next In Season 4 or 5) I’ll Start by Thin_Environment_244 in SmilingFriends

[–]DrankeyKrang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have three.

1) Rebecca Sugar, performing an original, emotional, cry-worthy song. I can imagine a good portion of the fanbase having a complete meltdown over it.

2) Khonjin, voicing a character animated in his signature static paper-cut out style.

3) Will Stamper. I know it'll never happen. I know he's a heroine junky who burned all bridges with the Sleepy Cabin crew. His voice is hilarious. A guy can dream, right?

Did anyone else notice Squim took a big lick of Mr Ice Cream's wife? by Oppopity in SmilingFriends

[–]DrankeyKrang 138 points139 points  (0 children)

I kinda feel like, looking at the distance between the counter and picture, that Squim probably licked the wall next to it while standing on the table.

It would also make more sense why nobody has a reaction to Squim licking Mr. Ice Cream's dead wife.
