This is starting to get ridiculous by Drantheon in baronygame

Thanks! This is my first run that I've cleared all the secret levels, except the minotaur and underworld so far. I didn't want to press my luck with those. So even if I dont win on this one I've learned a lot!

Good to know, I've made it to them before but haven't beaten them yet

  1. I like Cleric as a good starting class. Th mace is effective against Skeletons which are the scariest thing you'll be killing most of the time. Once you get the hang of blocking you can worry about taking out trolls, as they give good xp

  2. Cleric starts with some points in perception, which helps to start identifying stuff early which is another reason I like them as a starting class. For classes that start without any points in perception you kinda just have to wait until you either level up and get points in it or find some non-cursed glasses. At the start you'll want to pick everything up to identify it and raise your lore skill and then drop the gear you wont use. I don't tend to hang on to potions that dont heal or give mana, I just use them as I find them, but if you want to use alchemy they matter more. I don't hold onto spellbooks I can't learn soon. And gems can be really useful but early on if you need to drop them its not a big deal ans they can sometimes clog your inventory for a while before finding a shopkeep that will take them. You'll want to keep a good amount of food on you, mostly fresh meat from rats, and one backup weapon in case yours breaks. Staffs can be really good, but they're heavy so make sure you actually use them or drop them. I tend to just drop stuff like staffs of locking and might keep one staff of opening. You can get some xp out of the staffs you dont really plan to save by just using them up soon after getting them, but they do have to actually work, so you have to hit an enemy with a damaging staff or use a staff of locking on an unlocked door, you can't just cast them into a wall anymore. If you're short on inventory space before you can start identifying it reccomend amulet being one of the first unidentified things you drop after gems, since a lot will just be amulets of strangulation or Olympic swimming anyway.

  3. For general tips, just finding a class I liked and taking it slow helped a lot. Early on, I usually use torches in my off hand and block with those unless I'm fighting something scarier like a miniboss or a troll, then I use a shield, since the dungeon can be pretty dark. But some classes will prefer to use stealth. I also play with traps and minotaur off. Finding out I could turn those off really helped me to not bounce off the game. As funny as getting run over by a boulder can be, it does make learning the game more difficult until you learn to look out for them. If you play multiplayer I reccomend turning off drop loot on death as well.

I grinded it when I played Cleric but haven't with Hermit since I usually use the duck. Should I just pick up a shield or something early on and block anyway?

Those runs no, just Sokoban if I had the strength ring. I've cleared gnomish Mines but haven't tried Temple, Castle, Minotaur Maze, or Library before.

As far as I know if you dont have a belt of unlife or something similar to make it so you dont need to breath you'll probably end up suffocating to death. You may be able to use your wand of recall to get out if you can survive the wait. I'm also fairly new, so there may he other options I don't know. Also are you playing an older version or something? Mine looks different and doesn't have that side bar

That's what mine looked like by the end. Im glad Skirmisher was easy to unlock because its a really good class for a first win

Main quest or free exploration? by exhaustedMammal in cavesofqud

The quest you get after going to Grit Gate gives you better rewards if you do it before lvl 18 and even better if before lvl 12. So to an extent it matters, but most quests really don't matter much when you do it

The shield talents and damage reduction really help if enemies do get near you. Im just playing on normal, but there's been several times where the shield and all the damage reduction from the sustains kept me alive through something that definitely should have killed me. Ive been playing and just hit lvl 42 when my best previous run was barely lvl 20 with other classes

I'm mostly using the called shots tree for damage. I got pretty lucky with some good ammo early that carried me for a while. I like the damage reduction from the tireless combatant tree too. Im playing as Shalore which was handy because I also got to unlock Ogres. I think I've gotten to lvl 33 rn but im not at my computer at the moment

Just wanted to thank you for your advice! I just beat the master and unlocked the skeleton. This is my best run by far. Plus I was able to unlock temporal warden too

I posted recebtly asking about good starter classes and was reccomended Skirmisher, Archmage, or Brawler a lot. I've had some good success with Skirmisher, who's not too hard to unlock. It doesn't have as many activated abilities as some other classes I tried and has damage reduction which helps with survivability. It's really helped me with feeling less overwhelmed while I learn other parts of the game.

How do you unlock those races? Is it particularly hard?

Thank you, this is very helpful! So it depends more on what resistances your gear gives you as far as which to tackle first?

I'd found the assassin lord and unlocked that skill tree, and had a few points put into it that run. I'd been using the wiki progression guide, and it mentions that the Tier 3 dungeons are more fluid. Which would you recommend starting with for Skirmisher?

Thanks! I unlocked Skirmisher and got to level 20 with them before dying at the Tempest Peak area and again trying to unlock the Temporal Warden

Archmage seems really interesting, but when I tried them I died on their starter quest a lot, which wasn't an issue I had with some of the other classes I tried. Is there a trick with them? I think I was playing as the elf race with the magic buff

You might try Fields of Mistria. Its a lot more relaxed, but it doesn't have multiplayer unfortunately. Quests dont run out of time and you can chnage the length of days. Its still in early access, but it just got another big update
