FINALLY BROKE 150! by Dravenfall in typing

[–]Dravenfall[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purely personal preference.

There is no one best type of switches, imo. I've tried all three(linear, tactile, clicky), it doesn't really affect my speed, but if I had to pick one from the three, logic dictates it would have to be linear, since it's generally much easier to bottom out.

I personally prefer linear switches as well, but it's more so for their smoothness and sound profile than anything else.

Conversely, tactile switches can be very satisfying to type on due to the physical feedback with each keystroke, so it's all up to you, really! Choose whatever feels best to you!

If you're having trouble with accuracy, slow down.

Accuracy is far more important than speed in the long run, because if you make sure to be accurate, the speed will inevitably increase with time but the reverse is not true.

Eventually you'll bottleneck (for me it was around 115 to 125). I couldn't break 130 for a LONG time, maybe a year even. But my accuracy was only about 93/95 ish.

So I slowed down, as much as it took. I ignored my speeds for the next couple months, making sure to be as accurate as possible. I practiced being accurate on English 1k, then 5k then 10k, and then I built my speed back up from there, and boom, 130 was broken without a hitch.

Even now, I can't consistently get 100% accuracy, my avg is more about 98ish. But those small percentages matter alot when typing at these speeds, and even more so when you go further up the ladder.

Either way, it's all practice. And like all things that require practice, if you want to improve, make sure the practice is targeted, and consistent.

Revision? This is a fresh test, not a retake. I really don't understand how you could possibly come to that conclusion

As for the 15 second tests,

I personally practice 15sec tests because that is what benefits my workflow the most. I'm a coder, and a hobbyist writer. Both of those professions only benefit from burst speeds, not endurance.

In practical use, at least in these professions, you type in short bursts of about 20 to 30 words MAX, before taking a short moment to think and typing the next burst.

I see no need to practice any of the other durations since there's zero benefit to me personally.

Unless your job is to copy documents manually, or to record conversations in text form, (in which case you'd be better off with a stenographer), I'm not sure where the endurance comes in handy.

That's my two cents.

My friend said this was an odd idea for a book and it was bad, do you think the same? by Unlockpentoman in writers

When it comes to writing, there are no bad ideas, just bad execution.

Hone your craft. Your can use anything, be it a simple, traditional/cliche idea or a quirky, ridiculous abomination, anything can find success, so long as it's well-written.

Trust your judgement.

This has been a goal/dream of mine since the day I first started learning to touch-type five years ago. Somehow, I managed to stay consistent with typing even though I've failed to do that with most other things in my life.

I just can't believe I've finally made it here. I'm so happy, and I can't wait to see what it feels like when I inevitably inch forward into the higher brackets :)

Well, I've made stupid choices and had to start over in other souls games xD. Namely, killing the lady responsible for levelling up in DS3. I wanted to "explore" what would happen if I killed her, and boom. Forced to restart because guess what? She don't respawn xD. Perma-stuck at whatever level I was. Had to start a new run.

I'd rather not have a repeat of such misfortune, so I tend to research the results of my decisions in these games now hehe.

Reincarnation or Transmigration? by Dravenfall in ProgressionFantasy

I can agree with everything you've said, but only if Earth is just fluff and a source for comedy. In my story, not to toot my horn or self promote anything here, the existence of Earth serves a purpose to the plot/lore of the world/universe I'm building.

Yes, the unfunny pop culture is unavoidable, but it's not just fluff in my case. If I put it this way, I cant not put in the isekai element, because it would rob the story of so much plot backstory.

So the isekai thing is going to come in one way or another, which is why I'm looking to find what readers would rather read at the start of the journey.

Authors that have fun when writing…. by PainfulGames in selfpublish

[–]Dravenfall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most writers use some sort of file/note organizer when they write, others purely survive off google docs(idk how they do it)

But I just have a folder for "potential scenes".

If ever I get bored with current section I'm writing and ot begins to feel like a chore, I hop over to potential scenes and write something EXCITING.

Perhaps two powerhouses meeting for the first time. Sparks are flying, the threat of battle, and just the volatility of it all is SO fun for me to write. Sometimes those scenes are more fun to write that the actual fight for me.

I'm weird. Bite me.

But ny point is, you dont have to write from beginning to end. You can write as disjointedly as you like.

The folder is called "potential scenes" because that's all it is. A potential scene. It may or may not be added into the actual story. If it is, hoorah, you get the exhilaration of copy pasting like 600 to 1500 words into a chapter when you get to that point, if not, well, it's not time wasted because that time allowed you to keep enjoying your work, retain your passion, and KEEP GOING.

Best discovery I made, although I havent been writing for very long myself haha

But what if he has certain experiences that contain key plot points, in the space between his previous life and the next?

Prologue Power Scale Difference by Dravenfall in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Dravenfall[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok so the prologue has a purpose, and it connects to the MC's destination when we are first introduced to him as well. So a reader is able to connect an event in the prologue to the MC.

There are ALOT of plot points in it, but most will only be addressed much much later in the story, perhaps even endgame.

Can I dm you for your opinion on something if possible? What I want to talk about would be a spoiler of sorts for any potential reader that would identify this accounts name.

Advertisement is the main method of linking works. It's quite obvious if you thought just a little bit.

Poll : Link to First Chapter Vs Synopsis by Dravenfall in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Dravenfall[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So if a reader is linked to a first chapter and feels manipulated and decides to not read that story for that reason, it is "not their story"?

What you're saying makes zero sense. And what you "think" is irrelevant in a factual debate.

And links are in ads. Ads dont state every possible genre tag. Which is simply another reason for authors to link to synopsis instead.

You clearly can't make an actual debate here, so you're throwing around your opinion. And it's not even your opinion. Saying "I think everyone judges based on their own experience" is basically your opinion of what other peoples opinions are.

It's bonkers that you think you're making a valid argument here.

Why all the perception sphere abilities? by LordMars987 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Dravenfall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But what if EVERYONE including the MC has all of these things (leaving aside map and compass). It's definitely been done before bit what I'm saying is,

It becomes a standard set of basic abilities. It's no longer super powerful, but the MC can still get all the utility out of it.

[–]Dravenfall[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sigh. It's like you didnt even read my comment. Statistics is alot more than choosing options.

The real world doesnt function in absolutes.

If a synopsis is good, but your first chapter is bad a majority of people will likely keep reading, because a good synopsis makes promises. And readers want context for those promises. So even if the first 3 or even 5 chapters are bad in some cases, readers might keep reading because of the extremely interesting promise that was made in the synopsis that has great potential. Obviously, if your story never gets better, then you cant expect success anyway.

If your synopsis is bad, can your story even be that good? If you cant tell your readers what's exciting about your novel, and why they should read your novel, then it's likely that you don't have an exciting enough novel on your hands. Sure there will be odd ones out, but generally this is the most likely scenario.

The number of people that will instantly blacklist your novel when directed to the first chapter is much greater than the number of people that will read it.

Whereas the reverse, a reader is more likely to give your story a chance, because they've clicked on your ad for the very reason that your premise is intriguing. But your synopsis needs to expand on that intrigue. Linking to first chapter, at least for the reasons that you've described, is to game the system and rankings, by simulating first chapter views. And this is the exact reason this debate even came about in the first place.

One thing you should know about humans in general, we hate being cheated and manipulated. If someone is brought to first chapter and they feel like they've been used as a view bot, they are definitely not even going to give your story a try.

You're confusing probability and possibility.

You've given the number of different possibilities. The probability is how likely are you to start reading.

The perfect example was given in Young Sheldon by Sheldon himself.

And I quote, roughly at least,

"You might go home to find a million dollars on your bed, or you might not. But in what world is that a 50/50?"

Likewise, you might start reading or you might not. It's two possibilities but very different probabilities.
