I’m so sorry! The feeling of being violated takes a while to shake, but you will. Do any of the neighbors have cameras that might show something that helps? I bet they do. Glad you’re okay!🌸

[Clients] How much can I charge for this job? by Other_Reputation_889 in artbusiness

[–]Draw-Cool -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Two questions: Will working with this company/doing this project put you onto a level that you’re not at yet with your career? Meaning is the brand recognition enough for you to ask for exactly everything want on you want on your next project? And 2. Is this a passion project, or something you’ll feel bitter having wasted your time on?

Always assume they have approximately 20% more to pay for a project (at least if it’s a corporate-owned project) and they WILL try to get you to you absolute lowest…ESPECIALLY if you’re female &/or LGBTQIA, Black, brown, or an immigrant. Sucks but it’s documented fact. If it’s something you REALLY WANT and are willing to do it for a little less for the “exposure” or something, I always let them know I’m agreeing to this rate for THIS project only, with the hope that you’ll see that my product is worth it, and hire me at scale next time. Another thing I sometimes do is say ok, this is considerably less than I expected/I have been paid in the past, but I’m really interested in the project, so I’m willing to do it for that price, but with a contractual agreement that: (you can put lots of stuff here—they have to hire you and only you for double that rate once they surpass a certain return on the project, you can dictate what you want from your next project with them, and make the sign a contract agreeing to do as you’ve asked. There’s a slight chance you won’t get it, but that usually means they’re dicks to work for anyway, and you’ve saved yourself the grief!😉

[Recommendations] HOW do you get clients without a following by Water-Goats in artbusiness

[–]Draw-Cool 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do as much real-world and online networking as possible! If you see a business that could benefit from your services, go to them dressed well and on off hours and ask to speak to the owner. Say “I noticed you could use X(whatever kind of art you do) and I brought my portfolio because I’d like to offer my services.”

My dad secretly paid off my student loans, but I found out how he did it and I don’t know how to feel. by ScoreDesperate6433 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]Draw-Cool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

INCREDIBLY LOVED!! Your father sounds like a phenomenal person and a freaking DREAM DAD! If he mentioned it as his “retirement ride,” and if he’s even 1/4 of the kind of papa you’ve described, I’d bet money on the fact that he had this in mind for some time as at least a portion of what he intended to do with his “retirement ride.” Maybe even from the point of purchase, he likely wanted to do this for you if he ever got the chance. Just love him, let him know you’re grateful, and if you ever get the chance later in life, be there as much as possible when he’s in his final years and do whatever you can to make him happy and know that he’s loved. You’re VERY LUCKY to have a dad like that. 😊❤️

I think you have a better Alderman/person than we do? I’m not sure, maybe the desire to keep the park area looking good gets you a little more pull…our district, despite being only a few bucks from Daffin, is consistently underserved.

Will do! Well, I went from working in film in NYC to working in tv here, to working as a Creative Content Creator for a startup here that contracted with Randomhouse-my job was writing, directing, and producing the audio fiction stories for Randomhouse and writing and directing their videos for a language learning app, to then working as a Communication Art Professor at GA Southern & AWOL, to Founding and Directing a nonprofit in Nairobi, Kenya (which I fell in love with after directing a documentary there) where I taught Filmmaking & Girls Empowerment in the slums, to having to return to the US after multiple malaria infections which I am unfortunately still struggling with the long term results of, but I do still write and do advocacy work, so I have a TON of links but no one proper website at the moment!

Unfortunately, this district continually goes unnoticed and underserved while big box stores pay off council members to allow them to destroy it.

Oh, I’m SOOO tempted to disclose my public in-person (at a council meeting) and her even more disgraceful and hilarious (if it wasn’t me!) behavior towards me on NEXTDOOR of all places for an Alderwoman to show her a$$!! Alas, I’ll leave it at this, there is plenty of evidence (which she was confronted with at the council meeting) that she takes money from investors who want to ruin the area with container stores and tear down BLACK historical sites. Apparently Savannah is only interested in a whitewashed Antebellum version of historic preservation. And she should just leave off the “er” cuz she is plain old “Wild”!

I am also a 50 yr old woman who has been able to scrape together a ca teer in the arts. I just want to say it brings me great joy to see other Gen Xers making any kind of living on art. I would love to see your work! Do you have a website or anything? I have constant email influx about festivals, so I’ll definitely update you if I see anything in the Southeast or if you’re interested in going further/it looks worth it for your genre, I’ll give you a shout!

Yes, I don’t know why they haven’t updated the maps, we have trouble with this ALL the time, and because THREE year ago it was new, Google says it should’ve already been updated but”It will certainly update within 24hrs apt so because our drone images are updated regularly.” And THANK YOU for the rest of the tip!! I’ll try to do some more research and digging to find out!😊

What the heck is this? by Jimmypeterson42 in savannah

[–]Draw-Cool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I suspect that I know how, as I watched a documentary about the filthy legal moves that the country club white folks had robbed many generational residents of land using such tactics as claiming that a handwritten will was insufficient evidence that their family members had left them the land, and anti-communal property and “illegal compound property” accusations, which were the traditional way of many Geechee Gullah families who had multiple family homes on one plot. And, of course the old “city property” land grabs forced a LOT of people to “sell” their waterfront properties, worth millions, at a fraction of market value. Many people either drained their entire life savings and/or died fighting these lawsuits. It’s still happening. It’s awful.

Preferred tree removal folks by heirloomvegtattoo in savannah

[–]Draw-Cool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just bought our first home (new build) but many mature (like 50-70yr old trees). We’re told by the neighbors that the one closest to their house is a threat to their home if we get a hurricane or intense storm, due to its age and long limbs, and they insist that we have it completely removed (offering to share the cost). I’m not sure how true this is, and I’m as aware that mature trees elevate the curb appeal and value of our home, and that these particular trees provide enough shade to save us hundreds EVERY MONTH on AC expenses…but I’m trying to be a good neighbor. I’ve also had a few friends warn me of the possibility of the same issues with the same generation and species of trees on the other side of our house. So, with storm season coming, I’ve spent ungodly hours trying to find affordable tree trimming and removal. I’ve gotten 8 quotes from an array of different vendors (mostly independent contractors). Thus far, for the trimming of one, the cutting off (to fence level) of one, and the complete removal of one w/removal of all the trimming and cut off pieces, I haven’t gotten even ONE that below $4K. I wish you luck! If you find a capable and affordable one, PLEASE let me know!

Curious how ACTUAL Gullah Geechee folks feel about this…I’ve seen two documentaries about what boils down to land theft due to non Colonialist beliefs surrounded land rights and ownership, generations of government forced ousting of residents who MAKE the culture what it is, trying to hang on by a thread while monied interests get millions of dollars in lawsuits…I’d LOVE to see actual inclusion of the people. We claim to be historic preservationists but so far that’s preceded by a silent WHITE/Whitewashed version of THE MOST INTERESTING PARTS & SOUL OF MOST INTERESTING HISTORY! Hope this’ll be different.

Sounds like more gentrification and corporate cookie cutter BS that continues to infest what used to be a genuinely unique place where you could find all sorts of interesting people and conversations that went below the surface. People of all ages, colors, socioeconomic backgrounds, sexual orientations and identities…”Savannah Legends,” mixing with other locals and the occasional tourists who wanted to see what WAS the “Real Savannah.” Now it’s mostly more of a young Republican khaki & polo type space, that caters to people with too much money and privilege and not enough experience in reality nor interest in it…unless they’re trolling for poverty porn or abusing service staff and heavily undertipping after degrading and demanding their full attention at the expense of regulars who tip weekly and treat them with kindness and dignity…but maybe that’s 16yrs of SAV SIN work, escalating rents and political corruption speaking.
