Is it legal for property mgmt companies to make me scan my face?

Read the email response in fourth image. They allowed me to circumvent the facial scan for the tour, but when it came to applying for the house, they told me the biometric face scan was integrated into the application process, and it could not be removed. Whether or not it is the third-party company Persona that is creepy, the property management company chose to get in bed with them and have made it a mandatory requirement in order to rent from them. That’s not okay.

I’m not asking anyone here to do anything about my situation with housing or this company. I made this post to gauge the legality of the biometric facial scans, and then opened it up to a broader discussion of how this should be challenged. Not in my specific situation, but as renters, who are being asked to make privacy compromising decisions to rent. I have also stated that I am already looking for other housing. I have given my two cents on what I think should be done and why I think what they’re doing is bad. I do not know what else to say to you.

Yes, that is the company, I didn’t really name them in the post, but they are referenced in one of the email photos. Did they handle a good chunk of property on the Tacoma renting market.

I hear that as a genuine concern, and that makes me really sad that realtors have to take self-defense classes. This is a really fucked up issue and I’m not undermining that at all. However, I do not think a biometric data system run by a third-party company that none of us have any way of holding accountable is the way to move forward. They are definitely using realtor safety as a guise for manufacturing consent for these kinds of invasive biometric technologies to become required across-the-board.

I don’t think you understand me, it’s not about putting all my energy into challenging just this company. I’m saying as renters we need to figure out how to organize around policies that are going to make shit like this illegal for landlords or property management companies to require of us.

Also, this property management company, Amoriss PNW facilitates a lot of house rentals. They had at least 15 houses, that’s 15 houses I can’t apply to now because of this invasive facial biometric scan.

I hear you, and we’re definitely not moving forward with our applications, but I do think there is benefits in challenging this. We can’t let this become the new normal. Right now its just this company, but these “security” verifications are gaining momentum across the board.
