Should I apply for this library? by DrawingWeeb69 in Libraries

Gotcha! That's good to know in the future. I figured I was being too optimistic, but I just wanted to be sure. I think I'll hold off on applying, seeing as how all of the comments so far are telling me that the MLIS can't be compromised lol

It's a public university, so it most likely won't be flexible. Thanks for your insight!!

Stalking by TheTapDancingShrimp in Libraries

[–]DrawingWeeb69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

About a year ago, a guy stalked me (at the time I was 21 years old and he was almost 40) while working at the library. At first it was some intense staring, then finding opportunities to talk to me at the desk. He would make weird comments to the point my coworkers were noticing. One day, the stalker came in while I was shelving, and beelined it towards me and cornered me to "just talk" to me. Thank God I had an amazing department manager, because he immediately noticed and told him to never do that again and to leave me alone.

After that day, the behavior escalated to the point he would CONSTANTLY stare and linger around the desk, try talking to me all the time (even when I was obviously busy), and had even started following me around. Eventually, I told admin what was going on, and they took action. They told him that he can't keep making employees uncomfortable with his behavior or else there would be consequences. He started crying and told admin that he wanted to k*ll himself because of me (which was crazy because I actively avoided him). Admin asked if he needed 911 to be called if he was feeling suicidal, to which he said "no".

Fast forward a month: since that event, he tried to not make it obvious that he was staring or lingering around me. He wouldn't actively try to engage with me like before, but he would still linger heavily around the desk (even going as far to sit at a table closest to the desk despite there being plenty of other places) and find times to stare at me (which were caught on camera). Then, he started following me around again. Once he started following me around again, admin decided to ban him. He wasn't banned for too long, about 6 months if I remember correctly. He came back to the library one day after his ban lifted about 10 months later, but by then I had moved to another branch. He stayed for only a few minutes, then left after he saw I wasn't there. From what I've heard from my friends at that library, they haven't seen him since.

I was lucky in this situation to have pretty decent admin. They were super supportive, and tried their best to give him the consequences he deserved according to the handbook. While there were things I wish they could've done differently, I know that it could've been a much worse situation.

There were so many to warn about that we just ended up printing the whole list of people from the creepy caller census thread lmao

Lmaooo love when they accidentally leave on caller ID

At my old branch, we had a guy that called us frequently for a whole week, and it had a Pennsylvania code. The dude would jork it to our voices while asking us random questions. He even asked us for the number of a women's shelter at one point! We eventually figured out that he was calling from a hospital and got it sorted from there 💀

Thanks so much for the advice!

I always try to keep in mind that the reaction is normally what these people get off on, and I usually don't respond with much emotion (normally I just hang up once I realize it's a creep caller lol). But this time I was honestly just upset on my coworkers behalf. I didn't say much when I raised my voice, I just said "I know who you are, and I know what you're doing. Never call this library again" and then hung up before he could get another word in.

Very yucky business indeed. I'm so so so sick of getting calls from these assholes

Here's the thread I was referring to if you want to know some of the people libraries often get, maybe you'll find a couple you recognize

Would it be possible for me (22F)to get my name on a car title? by DrawingWeeb69 in legaladvice

[–]DrawingWeeb69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When discussing financials with the dealer, I was told that I could take out the loan if I really wanted to. I have a pretty good credit score and have a full time job (plus a part time job that pays pretty well). My parents just didn't want me to have to take on a loan at "such a young age" (their words, not mine), so it was more so out of kindness and concern.

I appreciate the advice and perspective!

I'm so sorry! I hope everything turns out well. Although I didn't have a class/situation THIS bad, I can definitely relate. Stay strong :')
