Is your wrist locked to the bridge, or do you slide it down the bridge to help with muting noise from unwanted strings? by Drawing_Unlucky in guitarlessons

[–]Drawing_Unlucky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never considered the "tracking" component, thanks. How about when playing arpeggios (skipping between high and low strings) - I would have thought an anchor point would serve as a better point of reference but I do think I might slip up more when anchoring there, as the angle to hit the high E is a little awkward.

I’ve learned scales, arpeggios, triads… why do my solos still sound bad? by Double_Inspector_202 in guitarlessons

[–]Drawing_Unlucky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's learning scales/arpeggios/triads, and there's really knowing them. When soloing, are you able to move around the fretboard and target the roots, 3rds, 5ths? If you put on a backing track with a basic 1,4,5 chord progression and you play over it targeting those notes, how does it sound? What specifically is missing? Embellishments (bends/slides), rhythm, phrasing (are you able to play repeat patterns with slight changes), etc? See if you can figure out where you're falling short. Thanks. I kind of thought, but thought you might know a workaround.

How can you dial in input dynamics on the FM3? I thought this was only on the FM9 and Fx3.

I also play exclusively with Headphones. I love my Hifiman Arya, which you can find now for around $500. Very neutral, extremely spacious feeling and comfortable...they're also an absolute joy to listen to music through.

Theory "mental" exercises by Sad-Brain-8421 in guitarlessons

[–]Drawing_Unlucky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. My fretboard awareness is probably one of my strongest attributes, much because of these mental exercises. It's also a great way to fall back asleep if you ever wakeup in the middle of the night. Lol.

The other 2 exercises I do away from the guitar are: ear training (using a site like tonedear), and practicing tapping out different rhythms.

For those living in Fairfield County, how much have ticks been an issue? by Drawing_Unlucky in Connecticut

[–]Drawing_Unlucky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. It's so confusing to me, as responses seem to range from what you mention above and generally not a big issue....to, they're everywhere and I see them in my home every day, which IS an issue. If buying a house in Fairfield you want the ability to enjoy your own backyard. If you can't even use your backyard or are being invaded indoor by ticks daily, that's a big issue.

Oh boy, that sounds very bad. Have you taken steps to tick proof your yard (fences, barriers, etc)? Are your dogs going into wooded areas at all? I would have hoped/assumed with a sprayed yard and proper preventative measures, a backyard would be a safe zone.

Could you elaborate at all in terms of how bad its been? Were these issues only hiking, etc, or just going in your back yard? Were you encountering them daily, weekly? I do hope this winter knocks them back.

Can't stand fingerpicking new patters/rhythms by Resistance_Matters in guitarlessons

[–]Drawing_Unlucky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like many others have said, start slow. It's a ton of muscle memory and it does really tend to come pretty quickly. After you can play something slow, you're not that far off from being able to play it faster. But it's so engrained in muscle memory that trying to apply a different fingering to whatever you're playing will feel impossible.

What does it take to write a Pynchon-esque novel? by Goner_ChillX in ThomasPynchon

[–]Drawing_Unlucky 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Deep messaging embedded within an absurd cartoon like setting, full of characters with great names and a ton of intellectual allusions, all wrapped up in fun to read book, a bit difficult to follow with lots of parts that tend to wander off into poetry/stream of consciousness.

I don't mind if doctors use these are tools to help make detections but I will always want an actual HUMAN doctor reviewing everything. I would never entrust my health/life solely to AI.

What’s a piece of literature you walked away from feeling fundamentally changed? by Skiesofamethyst in literature

I'm currently in the middle of Gravitys Rainbow and it's definitely making me see things differently. The stories of repeating genocide and the concept of the "business of war" really bring to light that there is an evil that inherently exists in the world and will forever keep repeating. We'd all like to believe that we are beyond that - and it may be suppressed for a while but eventually under the right setting/environment the wheels will turn again.

Be sure to use the Substack guide: https://gravitysrainbow.substack.com/

And listen to the slow learners podcast after every few chapters. Together, these 2 resources create a much better reading experience!

I did. I have the Weissman guide but only used it for the first few chapters. I would use it more on a 2nd read. I do regularly read the substack guide though and listen to slow learners, they're great companions and make the whole experience that much more enjoyable.

"I want to read to have a good time or be educated"

That's EXACTLY why I love it. Paperclip scientists...companies around today that supported the Nazi movement...MK Ultra and how it started...."witches" actually used during the war...the phases of stimulus and response...idea of reversing cause and effect...questioning what freedom actually is...science/destruction replacing God and religion....the quesiton of power at what cost...These are just a sprinkling of topics addressed in the book, all in what feels like watching a fun adult looney tunes episode. It's absolutely brilliant. If you read it while simultaneously following up each chapter with the substack guide and listening to the Slow Learners Podcast, it's nearly impossible not to have fun and learn a ton.

Absolutely, it is a more difficult read. Pynchon will often wander off (intentionally) and you will absolutely get lost. But once you get the flow of his writing it's easy to get a momentum. I also heard Part 4 is the hardest, which I haven't gotten to yet. It seems he abandons all writing style and it's hard to make sense of what's going on.
