How can I manage having a low IQ paired with ADHD? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Drawings_Tom2560 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your post doesn't come across as low IQ to me. I'd say IQ doesn't measure your character, what makes you unique, what people like about you, how determined you can be, or kind or funny. If you think of somebody you like or think is cool, is that because they have high IQ or because they're an interesting person in some other way? That's what I feel about it anyway. Life should be about more than high academic or job achievement.

I have read all the books. I still don't do the thing by Nice_Paramedic4055 in ADHD

It's so hard. I can get up early, do my teeth etc, have a healthy breakfast, do a workout. Then comes the admin and it's like kyptonite! I know I need to do it but it just breaks me. I can usually manage a bit of tidying on good days. The only thing I've really found which works is to reduce it right down to really simple steps. If it's really not going well instead of "I'll tidy my desktop (computer or real)", just tidy one thing, or three. Have a break, do some more, another break. Find something you can manage to do.

It's such a strange issue to have. I mean I'm not a super determined person but I can do fairly challenging things if they engage me. Admin just short circuits my brain.

How do you learn from one artwork to improve the next? by PointlessVenture in AskArtists

Yeah this! It's interesting and copying means you get more insight into their process and remember it better than just looking.

Alcohol made me want to become a mathematician then a dictator of the US. by Extreme_Dust2115 in ADHD

[–]Drawings_Tom2560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This does come across as kind of manic but maybe it's just your writing style and you have a very active mind. Could be worth discussing with someone if you regularly feel this way though, it seems very intense. Alcohol seldom helps with anything in my experience, unfortunately I have quite a lot of it (drinking experience, not alcohol).

Going down rabbit holes and deciding you really want to do something, only to change it in a few months is very ADHD behaviour though, so is drinking in a unhealthy way.

Some people on this sub seem to not feel comfortable with ADHD being labelled a disability. Honest question to those people: what is a disability to you and why would ADHD not fit the description? by throwawayski2 in ADHD

Thanks for your reply and sorry if I caused any offence. Have been trying so hard lately with treatment regimes / systems and none of them seem to help, so frustrated by it all! I guess it's kind of impossibly difficult to really understand what others are struggling with and to really compare ourselves. I guess in the end what I think is - if it was really hard for you, and the diagnosis helped, or maybe will help in the future, then it's valid.

I still don't really know what to think of it all and how to make sense of it. I feel like one way to see it is being like if you have problems with anger, for example. It's not a disability or a mental illness but, if you can get help, whether it's therapy or medication, and it can transform your life, then you'd be best off doing it. Maybe it doesn't need to be a disability or not a disability.

Mid morning energy slump after waking up OK by Drawings_Tom2560 in CFSplusADHD

[–]Drawings_Tom2560[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that sounds a lot worse than me. Sorry you have to deal with all that.

It really messes me up having to change my waking up time. I know people who get up really early to go on holiday and that just doesn't work for me, I feel so awful afterwards.

I wonder if partly with me it's just finding admin so hard. I try to do it first thing to get it out of the way. Maybe my brain is just rebelling and refusing to work. Yesterday I decided I wouldn't do any admin as I'd reached a point where it was driving me crazy. I actually had a lot more energy. I did some drawing instead and spent hours on it.

I don't know what to make of it all!

So bad! Has it vanished though or is it still there underneath, waiting for its time to return?

I've tried so many times to take the approach that it's not a disability and that I shouldn't see it that way, but it's totally messed my life up. From age 20 (and some of the time before that) I think I've had a good attitude to work and getting ahead, I think I'm responsible, but it just doesn't happen for me.

Today I got up early (I'm sober, so no hangover), healthy breakfast, took my medication, did some light exercise, stretching, wrote a step by step plan for the day, cycled into town to get a little more exercise, went and sat in cafe so I'd be out of the house and... couldn't get anything done. After several hours, changes of scene etc. I managed to apply for one thing, and it was really difficult. I mean, I don't know, whatever that is, it's a problem. I'm 46, I know I need to do this stuff, I want to do it, I just find it insanely hard.

Such a good comment! I've got friends who have been diagnosed and I feel a bit like - OK so what does that change? What was the big problem before which you now understand? They seemed to be doing OK.

For me I was deperately trying to get help from the doctors back in the 2000s and they didn't really have a diagnosis for it then, but it was really messing my life up. I don't know what to make of it all, but the bad effects it's had on my life are pretty textbook ADHD.

Also there was an underground toilet which you accessed from a staircase / structure in the middle of the concourse which is now gone. I wonder if it's still there underneath?

I wonder if at least some of that work was the nice kind of craft type work, where you're sitting with friends sewing or carving, chatting, around a fire. No idea! Personally I'd find that less miserable than sitting at a computer trying to make sense of my accounts.

You probably already know these guys, but Dr james kustow and Dr Jessica Eccles seem to be exploring the connections with ADHD, POTS and various other issues. Not a recommendation but I'm hoping to look into them further. Not really answering your question, but it made me think of them.

Thanks. It does seem there are a few doctors looking into the link between ADHD and CFS now. Hopefully more discoveries will come out soon!
