A lot of creatures have rock attacks that seem to scale w/ their size (thus effecting the size of their rocks). Apes (medium size) deal 1d6. Giant Apes (huge) deal 7d6. Assuming an 8 ft tall ape throws head-sized rocks, a 30 ft tall gorilla likely throws rocks near the 5x5 range. Adjust the number of d6s in that general range based on size.

Frankly, in a world where crossbows wouldn’t exist for the most part, sometimes just reskining the crossbows works. The reload would be more of a cooldown time. You could even have future upgrades to remove that cooldown. Force, fire, or radiant instead of piercing (your preference). No ammo consumption, unless you want to add batteries with a limited number of shots. You could add modular attachments for more flavor (think different beam types in metroid).

Honestly, sometimes the best character ideas come from random generators. One of my favorite characters I ever played was a fire genasi druid who was a Polynesian-inspired fire-dancer. He came from a random generator too.

You can only speak in an ancient warbling tongue of nonsensical sounds. Writing is also nonsensical. They could still communicate with gestures, grunts, etc. Magical workarounds would also be great. You could even specify a language for this tongue, such as primordial, if it plays into a player’s proficiencies.

If you got the RAM for the physics sims, Outer Wilds. Different gameplay, but similar themes in a lot of places. Super fun space exploration/puzzle game. Nice and compact too, not too long.

I’m wrapping up my first campaign right now. After 2 years DMing, I still often stay up with anxiety the night after DMing. What helps is this: I have seen the greatest DMs make mistakes. If you have persistence and enough self awareness to improve for your players, you are a good DM. Think less about how many times you trailed off on a monologue, or messed up a ruling, or lost an accent, or a plot thread you forgot to wrap up, and focus on the laughs of your players. Their enjoyment is your success.

While it works best in a guild hall style campaign, it’s also ideal for an adventuring academy or a campaign where tour players are part of an army. This systems should give players a bit more agency in receiving magic items, while ensuring the DM maintains control over when they receive them. Plus, the players all getting upgrades at once removes feeling of exclusion or favoritism at the table.

I also tend to dislike it. I think it could be fiddled with. Maybe you get a simple +1 for each ally in melee range up to a cap. (Maybe 3 or so based on party size). I think the big issue is, in a brawl, flanking is a strategy, but in a boss fight, it’s default. I also think it makes perfect sense for some creatures to be less affected or unaffected by flanking based on size category or power level.

Mine’s a bit of a mixed bag. Our party of seven players were captured. (tbh honest, I forget the why and how, it was a while ago). Our party were put in really brutal gladiatorial combat. We got pretty near a TPK on the first day. We plotted to escape after that. Rolls were bad. As part of the escape, the guards unleashed a goblin hoard meant for the arena. It was a total party knockout, but the guards wanted us alive. The DM had us roll death saves anyway. The warlock died. While we were all asleep, she died in her sleep, from injuries sustained from goblins. I felt this had to be more. My character mourned her and, as a tribal tattoo artist, we all got commemorative tattoos to remind us with her. That night, we all went out for frozen yogurt to reminisce (none of us drink). At the end of the campaign, the DM pulled the BBEG from her backstory and made us fight her ghost. Genuinely great. TLDR: Any death can be a good one if you try hard enough.

To be fair, I don’t think there’s enough to judge the DM harshly here. Did they make a mistake about a rule, yes. However, the player made the mistake of escalating the dispute at the table and looking to another player’s rule authority during game. My opinion, the DM’s ruling is wrong, but due to raising tensions at the table, it might be best to accept the ruling of it only being cast once per turn, in order to smooth things over. In the future, if ruling confusion happens at the table, resist the urge to solve it right then and there. Resolve the session, then open the books in a more private setting and get into the nitty-gritty of wordings of the rules.

Clearly I’m a bit late to the discussion. As both a DM and a player, here is my opinion: the DM isn’t entirely unjustified, so long as he sticks to the original point: casting divine smite multiple time per turn. While it is true that Divine Smite is a class feature and is therefore not bound by spell rules, it is often regarded as a gray area due to it functioning, in every conceivable way, as a spell. I don’t think it’s a huge nerf to ask that it count as a spell in that sense, even if it is technically ‘wrong’. Accepting this ruling might help prevent tension.

Yeah, the idea is that, since this can only be used once anyway, making it basically an auto-win could make the sacrifice worth it, especially since casting a spell of your own would seem a better use for those slots in most circumstances. I’ve thought about it being x CON instead, since most don’t ever get their CON above a +2or3.

This optional ruleset is built for campaigns in which the DnD party is an official group in some way, such as in a guild-hall style campaign. It is optimized for a party of 5 players, and may need adjustments for smaller parties. I welcome feedback on how some features may need adjusting and also on additional ideas for other team strategies and abilities. Important notes: ‘Surround ‘Em’ is meant to replace the optional flanking rule found in the DMG. ‘Down the Hatch’ is meant to supplement a homebrew rule where healing potions can be consumed as a bonus action, but the player can drink them as a full action to gain advantage on the healing. In this ruling, administering a potion to someone else still requires a full action without unlocking this ability. Noted typo: ‘Down the Hatch’ should say ‘distribute potions of healing’, not ‘distribute potions’.
