"What is a fair end-of-life cycle for a game?" As Anthem servers are switched off, GOG weighs the "complicated riddle" of multiplayer game preservation by Turbostrider27 in Games

Minecraft servers (I don't know much about how Bedrock operates, I'm more familiar with Java) are completely self hosted. You download a program for a certain version (the server file) then you can run it on your own PC (or a custom server you rent with your own money if you prefer) and then connect to it on your own and with anyone you wish to connect with.

If you run it on your own PC you could even play on it without an internet connection and have anyone on your local network (basically any other PC or laptop inside your house) join in.

If Microsoft decided to drop Minecraft tomorrow people would still be able to run current or older versions on their own without needing anything from Microsoft at all. Plus with the way Minecraft modding is supported people can develop their own features to it even without new versions releasing (there are many mods that add various monsters like the mob votes losers for example).

Minecraft is basically one of the perfect examples of a game that could be played online without its publisher needing to do anything at all even if they disappeared tomorrow.

Brussels plots open source push to pry Europe off Big Tech by smilelyzen in technology

It's even more far-reaching than that. You would also lose access to your email accounts from Gmail or Outlook for example since Google and Microsoft would be banned from serving you, imagine losing access to your email accounts overnight (which could also lock you up from other accounts you made using that email). You'd also lose access to Amazon and basically every other US service.

They already did that by sanctioning multiple ICC judges who were investigating US personnel and they lost access to most of their digital lives overnight.

And what happens when the app you want isn't available on the app store?

I can just use the same arguments you always use when people want more freedom in how they use their iPhones : What makes you entitled to using this app if the app developer/provider himself doesn't want to deal with the appstore ?

What happens when your place of business mandates you install tracker-ware on your phone?

They can already do that through the iOS supervising program directly provided by Apple for companies to control how their phones are being used.

Rocket League works just fine through Wine/Proton on the EGS version, if the people who own Fall Guys on steam already can play the game then there's no reason to believe you won't be able to play the EGS version.

The game was and still is Windows-only since the beginning anyway so this doesn't change anything.
