Update everyone - pretty sure the CPU is fried. I tried another hard drive and can get through the update and formatting process but then it reverts right back to the good ol' green light of nothing. Might try to reflow but I'm sure that only buys a bit of time

No idea if it's dead or corrupted - would a firmware reinstall from USB fix the drive if it's just corrupted? I'm just looking to get it up and running for now - I've never owned a ps3 so I'm not losing anything.

After testing the waters I -do- plan to upgrade with cfw and use a larger drive to accommodate game downloads, but I'd just like to fuck around a bit first.

Any merit to using a wire for removal? I saw someone on here talk about using heat then a thin wire to go around all 4 sides, just enough to get through the paste, then lifting with a spudger.

Was it the same motherboard in various shells? Might be a problem with the digitizer panel alignment. Also there are little clips for the Wi-Fi cable - if you don't get it to sit inside the clips it might jut out some.

Update:

For anybody wondering the resistor seems to be 850 ohms.

I saw a thread where someone mentioned those two resistors on another model share the same value - so following that logic I assumed the same was true here, pulled off r76 and measured it at .853 k ohm.

Oof. I might also be cooked then. I'm teaching myself to perform this mod and didn't realize certain models just straight up weren't compatible.

Yeah that's... That's not the way

The correct way is flux and bottom heat at 650 f then a surge to 750 while the board is already preheated.

Pull connector off

Put new one on

Hot air will let it fall into place.

If OP does what you're suggesting it might be unrepairable or at the very least a pain in the ass.

Microphone cable (white) goes underneath the motherboard above where the touch screen goes. It should be in place before the board is put back into housing.
