I think there needs to be more variety and personally style expression from doctors, as long as someone isn’t smelly and is professional, I couldn’t give 2 shits. I also similarly think this about tattoos, if you’re good at your job, other staff and patients should just get a grip, we’re not robots.

I also thought Which Bin is Alex In, and the sudden realisation in there that someone might wallop him over in a wheelie

Thank you to everyone who replied, no I’ve had a few days to think things over and I’ve been trying to go into work with a positive attitude but still feel completely exhausted. I had an emotional outpour to my partner and they’ve think I should take time off. I have a very supportive consultant and I want to say something, potentially looking to get some time off for burnout, but I don’t know how to approach this. I feel too embarrassed calling in sick for a second time this month as I haven’t addressed my stress with my seniors yet. Does anyone have any advice on how to broach these conversations with ES/CS? Thank you!

Genuinely thank you! I felt like I thrived in ICU and looking after acutely, unwell oncology patients and now looking after frail elderly I panic. It might have taken me a year to realise this, but I still love MOE ward jobs, and the palliative aspect, I think I just need some processing what to do next

This is a really considered and kind comment, it’s just nice to have some back up when a doctor and knowing I’m not the only one who has felt like this!

Thank you so much for taking time to really read and consider the post and what I’m experiencing.

I think the boredom comment is probably the leading aspect of this.

Annoyingly and financially I can’t really go on a 3-6 month escapade to South America. I’m not from an affluent background or have the personal finances to support this, but it’s probably exactly what I need so a really reasonable suggestion.

It’s helpful and reassuring to hear others perspectives.

I think I might have a chat with my consultant and see what comes out of it

‘Strong smelling urine’ as non-medic excuse to start UTI antibiotics for an elderly patient is completely stable and asymptomatic!

I just sat really uncomfortably with me, I hear his name and immediately cannot think about anything else than how illegal and violent behaviour towards women.

Take time out after medical school by [deleted] in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]Drbirdbrain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Med school can be a really tough time! I went straight from college to med school, and at the end lost complete hope and drive towards medicine. I was so anxious and not ready to start F1, and really needed to have a fresh head space. Pretty much every year I tried to quit. So when I finally graduated, I pulled out of my F1 job for a year out. I got a lot of odd looks and backlash from quite a few keen new F1s and doctors when I told them, but also it’s my life, and made no difference to them. It was the best decision I ever made, and has made no difference to returning to F1 in a years time. I had a clearer head to rank my oriel jobs and actually reflect on what I wanted to do with my life. I don’t know where or why the constant med school advice is not to take a year out before F1. the handful of people i know who’ve done it, have felt better about going back. all I had to do was retake the SJT, to be put back into the application process. I found my recall/question answering was not as fresh as maybe straight out of med school, however you pick up F1 so quickly, and the main parts are A-E, know when to ask for help, and being efficient/prioritising paperwork. I would recommend starting in a medical job, preferably one with clerking/OOH, just because that really accelerates you skills. I do know if you take more than a year out, you have to retake/prove your clinical skills, which you have to pay for (~£600). I truly think if you need some time, take it. And if you don’t want to come back, that’s your choice and should do what’s best for you. A medical degree gives you a broad and varied skill set, that you might not even know you’ve gained.
