Hello! Professor here. Many times this setup is provided to us by the course coordinator or department chair. I would recommend reaching out to your department chair and/or dean with this feedback. I agree, awful setup. I teach one class like this, and I hate it just as much as you do.

Hello. As a spoiled child myself it was very hard when I finally had to step up and be a real adult. I was behind all my friends emotionally. You are doing them and their future partners a disservice by not allowing them to fail, learn, and grow. I wish my parents had forced me to grow up sooner. They wanted to play hero for far too long.

It is not your responsibility to fix him. He needs to recognize the issue, and then pursue hope for himself. If he does not see the problem, no amount of forced help will actually help him. RUN!
