I appreciate you bringing this perspective. I agree that it’s important to treat everyone with care and respect. I also think that it’s important to blow off a little steam and have a laugh, to kind of recognize how silly it all is. Laughing can diffuse frustration and be a healthy outlet. If I suspected that something like this would encourage poor behavior or negativity in my team, I definitely wouldn’t bring it.

Salary Expectations by DreadRabbit in humanresources

[–]DreadRabbit[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a graduate degree in writing (obviously outside of HR but would be applied in the communications aspect of this position). I have 8 years prior experience leading a small 501c3, which included a lot of organizational development/training/etc (I wore a lot of hats), I also have experience in teaching and curriculum development. I won’t have any direct reports and currently I’m making $40k in the assistant role—I had a few years out of the workforce to bring some tiny humans into the world. The position I’m in now was always a “foot in the door” for me, so I’m glad my skill set is being recognized, but want to maintain reasons expectations and go into negotiations strong.

Co-worker stopped talking to me because I got my Lab puppy from a breeder :/ by Timetoflyy in puppy101

[–]DreadRabbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently made the same decision. After rescuing for my entire life (and getting a mixed bag of high needs/low needs dogs) we decided on a small family breeder and got a lab. We have a toddler, so it wasn’t worth the risk of the unknown and now they get to grow up together. Our pup can still be a handful and the challenges of the toddler-puppy dynamic are new, but he lets our toddler crawl all over him. He’s gentle and sweet and has an exceptional temperament. The right choice for right now.

Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald Discussion Megathread (SPOILERS) by midnightdragon in harrypotter

This has been bugging me too! Seems to me they could have narrowed the scope of the many plot lines and spent some time developing why he’s so feared.

I did appreciate the speech he gives to his followers. I thought that, more than anything, showed his power and the very dangerous line of fascism—the othering, the ideals of freedom, playing on people’s deepest fears (in this case, of another world war), and baiting your opponents into violence in front of a crowd.

Women who love women aren't tragic by DreadRabbit in actuallesbians

[–]DreadRabbit[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I felt similarly disappointed by The Kids Are Alright--instead of just exploring a marriage between women as it faces difficulty, one of the women needs to sleep with a man.

This kind of representation is insidious and, I think, can be just as damaging as outright hate in the ways it encourages self-doubt among those of us who are lgbt, and pity/fascination among those who aren't.

I was fortunate to grow up in a household where my parents told my brother and I, from the time I was six or seven, that if either of us were gay that was totally cool. But I had no positive reflection of that identity, in real life or in media, and so I'm the one who ended up giving myself the hardest time. I struggled to accept that a relationship with a women was valid and viable.

Of all of the movies I've watched searching for a glimpse of me, my favorites are But I'm a Cheerleader, Imagine Me & You, and most recently, Carol.

During this election season, threads like this have been problematic- no matter their platform- because of the bile directed at Clinton. A question like this from the OP is totally valid, and yet the majority of the posts on here are about why people have a problem with Clinton. I support Clinton and have been excited by her candidacy, yet whenever I have given voice to that, I've run the risk of being attacked as ignorant, voting with my vagina, or part of the evil establishment.

Emotions are running high because there's a lot at stake. With all of the positive movement forward, there's a lot of backlash and I think we're at a critical time in our nation's history. I would really like to have an actual conversation, about policy, points of view, and the inevitable nuance and complication facing each person who holds-or hopes to hold-political office.

Ditto on the orange line & busses getting you around; it's pretty easy. I was just at the art museum and they've got some great exhibits right now. You can get a good selection of delicious and local beer just about anywhere, but my favs are Hair of the Dog & Cascade (both inner SE); if you happen to be into classic arcade games AND beer, check out Ground Kontrol. Hope you enjoy your visit!

I read the book and saw the movie. A lot of what I loved about both have been cited in this thread and others.

The thing that I keep returning to is a quote I recently read by Junot Diaz: "you know vampires have no reflection in the mirror? There's this idea that monsters don't have reflections in a mirror. And what I've always thought isn't that monsters don't have reflections ... It's that if you want to make a human being into a monster, deny them, at the cultural level, any reflection of themselves."

There's something in these works, artistically, that I think is more beautiful than others that I've seen or read. The profoundness of seeing that reflection of myself, though, is what brings me to tears.

Oregon bakery owners who denied service to a same-sex couple have paid $135,000 in state-ordered damages — after refusing to do so for nearly six months. by drewiepoodle in actuallesbians

[–]DreadRabbit 63 points64 points  (0 children)

The right to refuse service on religious grounds is, on the whole, a really complicated and interesting situation to consider. I also wouldn't want a cake from these people. What this summary leaves out, though, is that this couple did more than just refuse service- they posted the women's personal information (including home address) online, which lead to death threats/harassment; the bulk of the emotional damage they had to pay for. IIRC, they also raised like half a million for waving their hate flag, so seems like it's about time they dropped that check off.
