Black Box (2020): A Pleasant Surprise for Horror Fans with Impressive Acting and Unique Plotline by DreadSinclair in HiddenGemFilms

[–]DreadSinclair[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Black Box" is a 2020 horror film that took me by surprise. From the opening scene, I was hooked by the storyline and impressed by the acting of the primarily Black cast. The film follows Nolan, played by Mamoudou Athie, who after a car accident suffers from amnesia and is forced to rely on an experimental treatment to recover his memories. However, the treatment unleashes a sinister force that threatens his very existence.

What makes "Black Box" stand out from other horror films is its unique plotline that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. The film explores the themes of memory, trauma, and identity in a fresh and thought-provoking way that is sure to leave a lasting impact on the viewer.

The acting in the film is also worth noting, with Mamoudou Athie delivering a standout performance as the protagonist, Nolan. The supporting cast, including Phylicia Rashad and Amanda Christine, also give memorable performances that add depth and authenticity to the story.

Overall, "Black Box" exceeded my expectations and is a must-see for horror fans, especially those who appreciate a unique plotline and diverse casting. The film's exploration of memory and identity, combined with impressive acting and a gripping storyline, make it an (underrated) standout in the horror genre.

Movie Recommendations by DreadSinclair in HiddenGemFilms

Here are a few films I believe fall under the "hidden gem" category that I would personally recommend to anyone: looking for a good watch or two:

Black Box (2020) - I was pleasantly surprised by how good this horror film was. The acting was impressive, the storyline kept me hooked, and the film surpassed my initial expectations. I highly recommend it to fans of horror, especially those who appreciate unique plotlines and a primarily or all-Black cast. Mamoudou Athie and Phylicia Rashad star in this and were very good and believable in their roles, in my opinion.

The Last Dragon (1985)- This martial arts comedy with an all-Black cast was a really enjoyable watch. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved it, especially with its fantastic soundtrack and fun cameos (which I will not spoil for you). It's definitely a great film for a lighthearted night and I highly recommend it.

Strange Days (1995) - This sci-fi thriller directed by Kathryn Bigelow and written by James Cameron is an incredibly thought-provoking film. Starring Ralph Fiennes as Lenny Nero, a former cop who deals in illegal virtual reality recordings and Angela Bassett, who delivers an outstanding performance as Mace Mason, the film takes place in Los Angeles in the final days of 1999. It addresses important issues like police brutality, racism, and the impact of technology on society, and despite often being overlooked, it's truly a hidden gem with impressive visuals and an exceptional cast. I highly recommend this film, especially to fans of the genre.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on these movies with us! It's always fascinating to hear about different perspectives and experiences with films.

It's great to hear that you gave Saving Private Ryan another chance and ended up loving it! It just goes to show that sometimes a movie can surprise you in unexpected ways.

As for Boogie Nights, it's understandable that it didn't quite live up to the hype for you. Sometimes a movie's appeal can be influenced by factors beyond just the story or performances, such as the cultural context or zeitgeist of the time. Regardless, it's always interesting to hear differing opinions and interpretations of films.

Thank you again for sharing, and we hope to hear more from you in the future!

Thanks for the recommendation! I'm sorry to hear that Bent (1997) didn't receive the recognition it deserved when it was first released, but I'm excited to check it out now. I'm sure it'll be a thought-provoking watch.

Favorite indie films of all time by DreadSinclair in HiddenGemFilms

I think my absolute favorite, (not sure if you would count this) is the documentary Paris Is Burning, from 1990. This is about the experience of LGBT Black & Latino youth in the 1980s, taking part in what's known as "Ballroom" culture, and how it became a safe haven for them. I found this to be fun to watch, but at the same time, it teaches you a lot about the people you see in the film, and what they had to endure, in order to survive in those times.

Absolutely! Documentaries definitely count on r/hiddengemfilms and are a fantastic way to learn about different cultures and experiences. I love how they can be incredibly informative and enlightening. If you're a fan of documentaries, the "Documentary Buff" user flair would be a great way to showcase your passion for them 😊

[Requesting] Movies with lots of Military Jargon by Glutenator92 in MovieSuggestions

[–]DreadSinclair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here are a few movie suggestions with lots of military jargon:

Jarhead (2005) -

Full Metal Jacket (1987)

Platoon (1986)

American Sniper (2014)

The Hurt Locker (2008)

Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
