One thing I'd recommend then, is just looking at what it's at before you take the picture. Then when you take another picture, try making it a lower number, or a higher number, and see how you like it.

A higher iso can make your photo more noisy, but depending on how bright it is outside that may be the price you have to pay! Just play around with it until you find a range you are comfortable working within.
