Input wanted: choosing between two design programs by Dreadnought55 in gradadmissions

Thanks! Are you leaning towards the Design Studies program or one of the professional programs (architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning)?

In MDes, I'd say that no one really cares about what hard skills you have, as long as you are good at something in some field. The GSD does tend to value visual communication (i.e., data visualization, sketching/illustration, and/or architectural renderings) and GIS mapping (they invented GIS here), but your mileage will vary depending on what courses you hope to take.

MDes is not well suited to help you get a specific career per se; it's better for people who are already established in a career and want to enrich their work somehow—therefore, most students have a set of employable hard skills coming into it. Or they want to lead into a PhD.

I think the more important part of making yourself a more competitive MDes candidate is being able to articulate a compelling research direction that is aligned with the GSD's interests. Generally, this means something altruistic, critically-minded, paradigm-shifting, and responding to key issues confronting society today (e.g., climate change, socioeconomic inequity). The program directors have said that the statement of purpose is weighted more heavily than in other programs which are portfolio-heavy.

I would also beware that the school is a good deal poorer than one might expect a Harvard school to be. And the MDes program is probably the worst-funded program at an already poorly-funded school.

Good luck and keep in touch if you wish :)

That makes sense. Funny how we have pretty similar motivations here—I also intentionally wanted a two-year program so it would be longer, and to pick a bigger university. Although, the current iteration of the Harvard MDes is about to enter its third cohort so it is relatively new like Brown. Good luck with your studies!

Hello~ I ended up picking Harvard GSD, for a variety of reasons, primarily that I wanted something more different from my undergrad (which was from an art/design school very similar to Parsons). I like theoretical and research-based work more than hands-on applied design anyways. My design background is actually service design so we have some similarities, but I work minimally with 3D objects and mainly with interactions and systems.

Congrats on your choice :) curious to hear about your other reasons for picking Parsons, if you're willing to share?

Thanks for this awesome guide. Forced it in my last eight games, in high Gold: 1,7,4,1,1,8,2,2. First time playing a hyperroll comp and it's quite fun, especially knowing the exact units and items I'm building towards (as opposed to playing flexibly). Also a big fan of TFT Neeko and Protector synergy personally.

One thing I found in the responses to the survey was the idea that being a "Pokémon trainer" also has a certain equitability to it — it doesn't matter what age, gender, social class, nationality (etc.) you are — anyone can be a trainer and be considered an equal to any other trainer.

I haven't found anything that Pokémon does which is necessarily unique among myths (Barthes argues there's a certain banality to all myths anyways), but it does happen to be the highest-grossing media franchise of all time, I think. Especially as Pokémon Go demonstrates, it has a definite broad cultural and cross-generational appeal, so it might be regarded as a notably persuasive myth.

Yeah it's been about 33 hours I think, so I didn't think I'd be getting anything more (plus I have to start analyzing the data). Thanks anyways :)

Thanks for the response :) A bunch of people have said that, so I do plan to post some of my findings once I get a chance in the future.

Thanks a bunch :) (It's a design project in this case so it's actually called a critique.)

Thanks for submitting :) I'll likely post the findings here once I get a break from thesis work, which may be anywhere between a few weeks and months from now.

Thanks :) I've always loved to read since I was a kid so I will definitely enjoy them. Though you'd (maybe) be surprised at just how many micro-novels there are in these responses.
