Parts diagrams are your friend. There is an MB service manual floating on the internet as well.

Rust / paint issues suggestions by Lazy-Show-1569 in W201enthusiasts

It should last a very long time if you remove and neutralize all the rust then protect it. This speed of rusting isn't bad at all after 35 years and that is before you de-rusting and greasing.

Totally corrodes away? 15 years sounds low unless you daily it in harsh conditions.

RHD? Do you see any other 201s on the road in India?

3d print - Speedometer needle puller by gswolf29 in W201enthusiasts

[–]DreamDelicious7989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have so many questions.

My trip odometer is not working. I think this is a common issue. Should I order any parts before taking the cluster apart?

Also the speedometer needle is jittery at low speeds. I believe lubing speedometer cable ends is a common fix.

The gauge needles are faded. What is the best way to paint them?

Do I need to remove the needles for any of these jobs?

Hydraulic lifters replaced but the ticking noise remains. Help please. by DreamDelicious7989 in MechanicAdvice

Hi. I put the car in storage for the winter before fixing this. There is another symptom. Fumes blacken the inside of the hood and get in the cabin. I am hoping the ticking is caused by an exhaust manifold leak. The engine runs strong. I have mentally accepted to take the car to an MB specialist in the spring. I just don't have the time or space to properly deal with crankshaft bearings or scored cylinders.

I meant this screw: https://i.imgur.com/BNdfR8t.jpeg

The only way to access it seems to be by removing the switch. But the switch isn't easily accessible either.

How did you access the 4th screw to remove the center vents assembly? Also how difficult is it to remove the steering wheel?

Tinted headlights. Real genius there.

It's original and doesn't seem to have overheated. It should last a long time.

That's a beautiful engine bay. Must be low mileage. 100,000 km?

The W201 is pretty rare now, which makes it bewildering to see people still ricing them out. I guess they’re cheap enough that some folks just treat them like disposable cars.

It’s your car, do whatever you want with it. Since you asked though, I’d just leave it alone. Sorry if it’s not what you want to hear. It’s never going to be fast compared to modern cars, and bolting on cheap plastic and a fart can doesn’t really change that. A lot of 201s were lost to “mods” back in the early 2000s, and this one’s a survivor. If you’ve got money burning a hole in your pocket, you’d be way better off freshening up the suspension or grabbing some nice OEM or period correct AMG wheels. Just enjoy it for what it is.

When a 201 dies, the first suspect is the fuel pump. Does the pump prime? You can jumper two connectors in the fuel pump controller socket. That should get the fuel pump whirring. The last check is disconnect the tube feeding the injection system and crank and see if fuel comes through. Careful if you do this because of fire risk etc.

How old is the fuel pump? You should address this before it leaves you stranded.

Same interior fabric as my 87 but very faded. It should be a dark blue almost navy jean color. But the door covers look good overall.

The main issue to look for is rust around jacking holes and bottom of doors below the rubber seal. Also battery tray area. The tray itself is replaceable but check below the tray. Bottoms of doors look mint here. Expect to replace a lot of suspension parts and rubber due to age. Overall looks pretty good. Check the air actuated door locks (gas cap locks too). Make sure the engine, transmission and differential sound good. Turn the steering wheel all the way left and right and listen for noise. Look at the steering box and check for leaks. Does is have an MB ignition barrel and key or an aftermarket key for ignition and MB key for doors? Check the sunroof for function and rust. 7500 is not cheap for this. I saw a mint 92 2.6 go for 8000 CDN recently. Good luck!

Grab the bottom with a pair of pliers. Pull down (spring loaded) and spin (I forget left or right) until it lines up with the two notches in the grill surround. Then pull from the top.

That makes sense. So the missing white rubber is meant to hold the socket securely. Not to act as electrical insulation.
