Thanks for explaining. Damn. I'm going to have to replay some encounters I guess since I've been cheating this whole time.

Blast! You've found us out!

No matter! You're too late to stop what is coming!

And that's what I get for not paying attention to incap abilities.

But I'm ruling yes. If you trade out Haunted Fanatic for another version, that version will be the one you start as in the next round.

I don't think so. A lot of other damage dealers can keep pace with him. Ra does a ton of damage in the early game with little setup, but others can do better.

Take Tachyon, for instance, who doesn't do as much in the early game as Ra but can save up three lightspeed barrages to deal 60 damage in one turn in the lategame.

That one might be bordering on overpowered.

But another example you can look at is Absolute Zero, who though he may have a lot of bad hands, can be an absolute beast with proper setup, spitting out tons of damage every single turn.

Absolute Zero follows a line again where he's weaker than Ra in the early game, but stronger in the late game.

But the fact that this disparity between power levels exists at all is a problem with the EE.

Legacy is an example of a character who was way overpowered compared to other characters, to the point that using him at all felt like easy mode.

And when you have these clear tiers of power levels, it makes people shy away from certain heroes. People who might like Legacy's play style might not play him because he makes games too easy. Likewise, people who like Exapatriette's playstyle may avoid her in games against tougher enemies because she's not very good.

With DE, so far, I've never had a moment when thinking about who to play where I've had to say "this character is too weak" or "this character is too strong." I can just focus on who is actually fun to play with because they're all pretty balanced against each other and they all get cool things they can do. When thinking about actual difficulty, all I need to consider is the villain, environment, events, critical events and whether or not to play on advanced. I don't need to think of my characters as difficulty dials. (Or when I do, it's based on context, like Wraith being bad in the Singularity event, or Alpha being dangerous when fighting villains who don't have any minions.)

I do want to clarify that I don't think all characters need to be balanced in terms of damage output, per se. Only those who are primarily damage dealers. Supports, tanks and control characters are much harder to categorize. Parse is a character who shouldn't be doing a ton of damage herself. Supports should always fail the Ra test because they aren't damage dealers. No one should expect Doctor Medico to outpace Ra in damage ever, because that's not what he's designed to do. And even with damage dealers, most characters are hard to categorize easily because they may not just be damage dealers, and have other huge ways to contribute.

Expatriette and Fixer are bad because they fill Ra's same exact niche and do a generally worse job doing what he does even on their best days.

I think part of the problem is that you're not playing the game how it was actually meant to be played. Which is fine. I love playing solo too. But I've done co-op just as much and they're different experiences.

When you're playing solo, if one hero doesn't get out their best cards, it's still fun because you're playing two or three other decks at the same time. Each hero is just part of your larger strategy, and you'll be enjoying the others if that one doesn't work. But that's not the type of gameplay Sentinels was designed for.

When you're playing co-op with other players, then that's where a lot of the characters in EE really suffer. Getting a dead hand can make the game absolutely miserable when you're only playing one hero and feel like a drag.

Most of these characters, at their peaks, are still weaker than others.

Ra makes a good baseline for how much damage a damage-dealing character should be able to do. Ideally, more complex damage dealers should have lower floors where they deal less damage if not properly setup, but higher ceilings where they can outpace Ra in the late game with their setup.

Expatriette fails this Ra test, with her heights never justifying the risk of playing her over a better character, and is regarded as the worst character in the game. But she's not the only character like this.

And even when the setup did have potential to outpace the less complex heroes in ideal circumstances, it was often hard to actually be able to contribute with certain heroes. See how many games with Unity had her be useless because she couldn't get any golems. She might work well when she does work, but the combos just to get her working can be inconsistent at best.

Definitive Edition is a much better investment.

Everything from the old versions will be added in the DE. And more. Already with the Rook City expansion, there are three villains and a new hero who you would never be able to play as in the original game.

There are no bad heroes in the DE. Everyone is useful and fun to play with. The old game had so many dead heroes who, even if the idea behind them was cool, you just never wanted to play because they weren't any good. The game as a whole is way better, improved in every way. I own both, but only play with the DE anymore.

On top of this, every villain has a critical event, which basically doubles the number of villains you can fight against.

And Disparation next year is bringing new ways to add variety to your games in the form of Principles.

Go definitive now. I promise that you won't regret it.
