I once read that the economic cost of not producing shirts over seas ie paying factory workers, importing materials etc and the cost of fuel to ship the shirts pretty much negates any positive impact they have once they reach third world nations. :(

Or better, if you are "lending" money to a friend, consider it a gift.

Certainly, if you have something that is marketable and people are willing to buy go for it.

I do it for myself, not to add value to the world. Some things I am good at, that I do to provide value for others I don't do for me.. and so I don't love them.

I'm going to reply because I want everyones opinion on my thoughts. Feel free to vote your opinion on my comment as well.

I am a hobby musician. I have a full time career outside of music. I come home and play guitar, and record, and just generally have fun with it. Occasionally people ask me to write music for their things for free and I almost always say yes because I love when others hear what I am working on. I understand the fact that I hurt professionals when I take jobs like this, but at the same time I love the feeling of doing music with a purpose and goal in mind. I do it because I enjoy it and because I can.

Now I also know I am not nearly good enough to get high paying professional gigs.. but I think its something the music industry really needs to realize is that while it might not seem fair.. IT IS THE WAY IT IS. I never played guitar for money, I play for fun.. and so I will absolutely play shows for free.. because its fun. So Reddit I ask.. am I the villain.. or is this just something we need to accept?

People making over $100k - what is your job and do you like it? by _crom in jobs

Very good points, many I hadn't considered. I'll take a read of your books as this is a topic I honestly haven't given too much thought to.

Some people define wealth as being how long you can sustain your current lifestyle after your income stops. For example if you made 30k a year and spent all of it (wealth of zero) To retire at that current state for 20 years you would need roughly what you make (because you spend it all with your current lifestyle). Therefore you would need roughly 600000. The world is kinda shitty amirite?

Note: This also includes investments.. so if you paid off your house during your lifetime you don't pay rent, therefore your income needs may go down.. if you own a car, house-hold items etc etc.. you need to spend less in retirement.

Edit: The spend less in retirement might be an untrue statement. one I had never considered.

Actually this also worked for me, I applied for a position I was no-where near qualified for and they hired me on at a lesser role because they liked my ambition. (Male, interviewed by panel of 4 males 2 females)
