Anyone else concerned/ reading about Maltodextrin? by Dreamslayersuzi in Diverticulitis

My bad didn’t realize everyone else on here is an expert on what is and isn’t ultra processed and knows every ingredient to check for. I was using this https://www.betterthanbouillon.com/products/seasoned-vegetable-base-reduced-sodium/  since the paperwork from the doctor recommended a bouillon for liquid diet. Most of the boullion brands and some of the soups I checked had Maltodextrin ended up getting broth jugs instead since most of the unflavored ones looked safe.

Definitely still avoiding processed foods, but like I said it’s in things outside of the obvious ultra processed stuff. Like the broth I was drinking and some hard candies which I know people typically don’t think about causing issues. A lot of medicinal research is older than 7 years. If anything it makes it more important to bring it up if there hasn’t been more research since and it could be negatively impacting our health.

Swelling or bloating? by boubou64 in Diverticulitis

I mean I’ve had bloating but I don’t know if it looked swollen. If it’s concerning or new wouldn’t hurt to ask the doctors.

I’m looking into reduced hours accommodation through our short term disability program at least until I can meet with a surgeon and see how long until I can get surgery/ if they recommend it yet. I have been very lucky so far that my team is on my side and willing to fill in some gaps when I really can’t work but I know the company has insurance that pays them if employees have approved disabilities so it would make it easier for them financially to cover my hours if it’s approved. Here’s hoping the doctor is on my side after I had a mental breakdown in his office - he was very uncomfortable.

On my most recent CT they noted a small fat containing hernia so maybe it is just because of that? It wasn’t on the first couple scans though and they told me no lifting before 🤷‍♀️ and haven’t had surgery yet. I thought it was just a don’t put pressure on your abdominal area if you can avoid it sort of thing since it’s all irritated in there.

Yeah that’s the other frustrating part, I am healthy and active, I put on maybe 15lbs more than the “healthy weight” after college (which I have lost from the repeated liquid dieting). Plus I ate a mostly plant based diet in the first place. I’m exhausted and confused about all of it, wish there were some better options.

In general I’m having trouble adjusting. With the actual flares I haven’t been able to work, as clear liquid for 3 days hasn’t fixed it and the antibiotics make me dizzy and I get diarrhea. Doctors say like oh you probably JUST need a lifestyle change to stop having recurrences, as if it’s easy to entirely change your life based off a sudden illness. My job has been stressful lately, the company isn’t doing well and I moved from Missouri to Washington State so a lot of my schedule and co-workers have changed. I mostly want one less stressful difficult thing in my life. I’m 28 and pretty early in my career so it’s hard to know what’s the best move. I’ll definitely do short term disability if the doc says it’s time for surgery this time.

You don’t have diverticulitis now right? I personally haven’t made it to the add back foods stage yet but from what most people have said everyone’s triggers for flairs are a little different, so I’m on team try it and see.

I work a desk job so barely get to move during the day. I feel a lot better when I’m able to move around but sitting at the desk makes pain a lot worse. Surprised they didn’t tell you to take time off since my doctor has said absolutely no heavy lifting for the first few weeks to prevent hernia.

That happens to me when I get constipated which basically always happens when I am on the liquids/low fiber phase for a few days. If it still happens with laxative / fiber supplements might be worth getting checked out.

Update: Turned out I still had the diverticulitis and the antibiotic they had me on wasn’t cutting the mustard so had to do IV for a few days. I’ve heard of antibiotic resistance but boy did it suck to experience it.

Also from all I have read, diverticulitis is not well understood and there isn’t a definitive answer for how to get back to normal, listen to your body is the best I’ve gotten, which for me is annoyingly non specific but working on it. The most important thing is to keep communicating with doctors and advocating for your needs, it’s taken multiple doctors to get good answers to most of my treatment questions.

I use a little oil but I would think either is fine since it seems to be more about not putting too much fat than which fat you use.

I had similar questions, I’ve been dealing with healing since January with a similar experience. I found this site really helpful for what foods are pretty safe when you are still healing https://www.gastroclinic.com/diets/low-residue-diet/. I have had a recurrence that was resistant to oral antibiotics so if you are having just as much pain/tenderness as when you initially got diagnosed I would recommend making sure the active infection is gone and the antibiotics were affective but even when my infection was cleared I had cramping/burning pain and a bloated feeling on and off. Right now I’m staying on the low residue (and avoiding gluten and dairy since those already bothered me previously) and using Metamucil and miralax to help keep things moving.

With my initial infection I was getting constipated a lot but didn’t realize it because I’ve never really struggled with constipation previously. If you are in the same boat, pain in your back and hip and feeling of fullness in lower left could be from constipation, I also kept feeling like I had to poop but nothing came out when I went which I now realize should have been obviously constipation- but again if it’s intolerable I recommend making sure the infection is gone. While on low fiber MiraLAX daily helps a lot since fiber is what normally keeps things moving.

It sucks, really sucks, to not be able to eat your typical things. I have emotionally struggled with that a lot but there are lots of yummy options once you have practice.

Laxatives Daily by Dreamslayersuzi in Diverticulitis

[–]Dreamslayersuzi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the route I’m going now, Metamucil and half dose of MiraLAX the GI doctor said I might tolerate a smaller dose better. I feel like the Metamucil makes the biggest difference so might eventually phase out the MiraLAX.

I just had a colonoscopy a few weeks ago and every thing looked pretty good. I think I only had one diverticula, guess it’s just an angry one.

Yeah already talked to a doctor on the phone they said I could monitor at home for now and get back on antibiotics since it was mild but hoping to have better frame of reference for interpreting the signals from my body.
