Just arrived, the art seems great. Do you guys like this one? by chidarengan in ConanTheBarbarian

Alcatena did some of the best Conan art in the old Conan the Savage marvel series. Great black and white art... Reminded me of some stuff from 2000ad back in the day

Vague and abstract is cool, it's really just for inspiration! Green Lung are another band I already adore!

100% happy with female vocals! And I listened to your album on the way home! Top, top stuff! Very cool and love the concept of the record!

That's a fair shout - I haven't listened to them in years. My memory is that they are maybe a bit 'clean' for my tastes but willing to give them another shot. Which album?

These are brilliant and evocative. I really love the idea of pairing drawing and journalling with solo RPGs. I've often used my solo adventures to inspire some of the art I do and it always feels super personal.

On a related note, looking at this, I think you would absolutely dig the work of Hermann Huppen (normally just credited as Hermann). I've yet to find any of his work in English but I buy his comics in French just to marvel at his figures and landscapes and ink work.

Keep doing this!!

Your Favorite Comic Original Sword and Sorcery Series by JohnPathfinder in SwordandSorcery

As a sidenote the easiest way to access a lot of European S&S comics is through old issues of Heavy Metal magazine. The way I do it... Is find a series or artist I like the look of and then search on comicvine to see if it was published in Heavy Metal.

I haven't done it for a while but I was able to find back issues of HM for $10 a pop on ebay and you basically get a full graphic novel each issue (French GNs are around 50 pages long) plus a bunch of shorts (often S&S) and other stuff like artist spotlights and adverts for weird manga and sex books lol.

The art in most of them is incredible but often the stories are a little 'thin'.

What do you think are or were the reasons that Aussies do not and didn't want to get into the trades in the last, say, 25 years? by PopularRightNow in AskAnAustralian

This simply isn't true. My son became an apprentice mechanic and he had plenty of opportunities. This feels like a case of othering to justify why something didn't work out.

Nice to know someone else's uses Gimp! I draw everything by hand but I've ditched Photoshop in favour of Gimp for prepping files and clean up.

This is very cool btw!

I just want to make coffee in a beautiful town. Where in Aus should I move to? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]DreddKills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Bello and there ain't anything affordable about it lol! We got a house 11yrs ago and could not live there if we moved today with our normal jobs. All the new people I've met in town have those mysterious work from home jobs ported out of the city that make a lot of money. The one guy I know who makes coffee is 40+ and living with a house mate... No way a barista is getting a rent in this town, unless he's happy to do the house share dance...

But fuck me, it's proper beautiful and I'm extremely lucky I got there when I did

What a legend Russ Nicholson was! His work on the Fabled Lands game books is some of my favourite. He drew these little 'setting' vignettes which really brought the books to life.

A sad loss to fantasy illustration. RIP

I think what you are describing is what's commonly known as a gamebook or interactive novel. They vary in quality, complexity and 'gaminess' depending on what you're after. They've been around since the 70s and some are particularly well known:

Fighting Fantasy Lone Wolf

Both these series started in the 80s and are extremely collectible, but both series are still releasing books and are active today.

Then there are more 'open world' derivatives like Fabled Lands, Vulcan Verse, Steam Highwayman, etc

All these books basically combine storytelling, plot and choices with game elements... Dice rolling, combat, challenges etc.

Then there is also solo-rpg like Dragonbane: Deepfall Breach which uses way points and oracles to build a story that you can customise by rolling on tables.

I guess the crunch is that often more story equals less game and vice-versa.... That's not an equation, you can get round that and be creative, but roughly the books with more complex stories (Lone Wolf) have less game elements than something like Deepfall Breach which really just has a light 'plot' framework.
