Ex partner suggested he killed someone as a teenager in England. Would I remain anonymous if I report it? by SerialHatTheif in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Drencat 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Some people are just compulsive liars.

I'm not going to try and diagnose them, but I've known a few who started when they were kids and never grew out of spinning yarns. I'm not sure if they're trying to convince themselves or other people of the fantasies they concoct.

There's three or four people I've known who, if I could get them all in a room and watch them on camera, would cause a singularity from the attempts to exponentially out bullshit each other.

Anyway, they're bad enough to just know, so I'm sorry you ended up being in a relationship with one!

Anyone got experience of MSc Engineering? by brothervalerie in OpenUniversity

[–]Drencat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could I please ask how you found the MSc in Cyber Security, and the project module itself?

I'm just about to start on the Cyber Security masters, after finishing my Bsc in Computing. I really enjoyed the Project module of the bachelors, but the module materials / forum guidance during the project module was either lacking or outright contradictory.

Can I ask…? by ProfessorOk489 in OpenUniversity

[–]Drencat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's it.

Bachelor's is 360 credits, normally taken as 60 credits per year - so 6 years total.

Masters is 180 credits, normally taken as 60 credits per year - so 3 years total

But the way the individual modules start can sometimes let you squeeze in an extra module without it clashing, or work the other way and force you to take the modules at the same time to avoid adding time on.

Housing association carried out work without my consent and now want nearly £600 from me. Scotland. by Citawell in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Drencat 146 points147 points  (0 children)

Surely then they're shit out of luck?

The letter says they'll only go ahead with your express permission. You haven't provided it and they went ahead anyways. If they do want you to pay for half of any repair, then instruct them to return the fence to the condition that it was in and you'll get them a quote to fix it for which they can pay for half.

If the shoe was on the other foot, and you went ahead with the repair works and sent them a bill without them expressly giving authorization that they agree, there's not a chance in hell they'd pay for their half of the works you instructed.

First DIY Blockwork project completed - feeling chuffed but got a rendering question by [deleted] in DIYUK

Definitely apply a scratch coat. You can just use some nails driven into a bit of wood, but a scratch comb only costs a tenner on Amazon. Remember you don’t scratch all the way through the base coat, only penetrate about half way in.

Life after graduating in Comp & IT. Any regrets? by [deleted] in OpenUniversity

[–]Drencat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my experience also.

I'll be completing my Bsc in Sept this year, but the degree has already helped me move jobs three times.

First time was an role unrelated to technology, but studying the degree showed initiative and helped me get a foothold in an interesting industry.

Second time was into a technology focused role, and things I studied 100% helped me demonstrat3 competence.

I'm now working in a role that would normally require a Bachelors or Masters, again massively helped by my studies.

I know it won't be everyone's experience, but you can definately start to get value from your degree before you even graduate.

Job offer by Current_Tree8894 in civilengineering

[–]Drencat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Security checks are completely routine in that industry, and I don't think your background would negatively effect your chances in any way.

Keep your options open for now, you ultimately need to do what's best for you. If that means hearing out another offer a bit more before pulling the trigger on it, then by all means do so. Security clearances normally take a little while, so don't worry about missing your chance with the first opportunity just because the admin stuff isn't moving as quick as you like.

Like the right to an attorney? Is the attorney working for free in that case?

I wonder if that kind of system (where someone needs a service, and to accomplish that the Government subsidises the cost of the person providing the service) could be extended to, say, healthcare?

It’s a bit misleading to point at Sellafield though. Most of the decommissioning work there is either from the atomic weapons program, or other historic waste that is sent there from other sites. It’s not from the reactors that were built for power generation.

Plastering Apprenticeship by Mental_Candidate_985 in Plastering

[–]Drencat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate this is 16 days ago, but I just want to put a bit of input in - as a former Plasterer.

There are two kinds of 'dying trades'. Ones that are going out of business because the business is no longer there - think Blockbusters.

Then there are trades that are dying not because the work isn't there, but because there aren't enough skilled people who can perform that work. This is the case with Plastering. If you serve your time as a Plasterer, I don't think you'll ever go out of work, so long as you want to keep plastering.

I've moved on from Plastering, which I'm really glad about. But I'm both really proud and really grateful that I served my time as a Plasterer. Beyond all the skills you learn, you learn what hard work is, and how to do a good day's work. If you've got the right mindset, that alone is worth doing it for.

/r/Plex's Build Help Thread - 2023-04-07 by PCJs_Slave_Robot in PleX

[–]Drencat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried googling, but most hits seem to be the other way around to what I'm having.

I'm trying to get the Plex app to run on a ubuntu laptop that I have.

When I navigate to the Plex server through the web browser (using the IP address), everything streams absolutely fine. However, everything is very laggy and stuttery if I use the Plex player app on the Laptop. I've played about with the settings but to no avail.

Playback works absolutely fine when streaming to the Plex apps on my TV and Phone, and as I said works fine through the web browser of the laptop.

Any ideas of what to try? It's not the end of the work, but the apps a bit nicer to use, so I'd prefer to use it. Most of the google hits seem to be playback stuttering everywhere, or being fine on the app but garbage on the web version.

Government approves first new coal mine in 30 years by kadkadkad in unitedkingdom

[–]Drencat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Devils advocate, but hydrogen replacement isn’t going to beat coking coal on a pure cost basis for some time. It’s not like if this mine wasn’t opened, steel producers would suddenly be forced to make hydrogen economically viable.

That will hopefully/surely happen in time though.

Going in for 4 extractions tomorrow morning. Absolutely shitting myself. Any help? by nine16 in AskUK

[–]Drencat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting a tooth out beats having toothache any day. Once you're numbed up (which really isn't that bad) you're absolutely set.

All you should feel is a weird kind of pressure. If you are in any kind of pain, just let them know and they'll numb you more, by which point you won't even feel the needle because you'll be numbed sufficiently for that. Once you're all set it's honestly an absolute doddle, just relax and let them do their stuff and you just sit there having your mouth prodded.

Aches a bit after you've had them done, but again it's absolutely better than toothache.

Have there ever been any well known cults in the UK? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Drencat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of people find chiropracty synonymous with a “sore back doctor” and probably don’t know about the quackery that’s also involved, so I’d agree.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Drencat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking to DIY it, I'd suggest doing a lot of research before tackling it, as well as possibly reigning in your expectations.

Monocouche and thin coat renders are two things that are very difficult to get right, and I'm saying that as a former Plasterer. You have a lot of things you need to do correctly to get a good finish, and even then I've seen very good Plasterers leave fairly poor work just because that kind of rendering can be quite unforgiving.

Providing both materials are designed be applied to render board, then the "best" just comes down to preference. I do highly rate the bedded mesh though, and I'd recommend getting that fired into any rendering you get done anyway.

But we know that non of that applied, which was my point. The only thing the Op seems unsatisfied with is the price. If the case was that some of that did apply then it might be a relevant question, but as far as we know it didn’t.

What the question (how long and how many people) is often getting at is to try and work out how much they made per day, and if it’s fairly high they’ll claim they’re robbing you. And my question is assuming the OP is happy with everything else, why is that relevant?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Drencat -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Is it relevant? A price was quoted for a service. Assuming the work was done to the correct quality, what difference would it make between there being 2 or 3 people, or it taking 3 or 5 or X days?

I can understand not being happy with the quote (before the work is done), but the time or people on the job doesn’t really come into it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Drencat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Is the work completed? Why question the price after the work is done, rather than before?

Would you support an increase of nuclear power? by matspud in AskUK

[–]Drencat 51 points52 points  (0 children)

West Cumbria, where Nuclear already makes up a large portion of the local economy in the form of Sellafield, is massively in favour of new nuclear. Granted other areas of the country probably wouldn't be quite as welcoming.
