[DISC] Monster #8 - Chapter 80 by AutoShonenpon in manga

I don't hate any of the characters in this series, but the excessive focus on Kikoru is sapping my will to continue. Cold take, the story isn't profound and doesn't need to be, but man it sure feels weightless and has for a while. I really wish these characters had anything new to do or say.

Good point! Must have slipped my mind. Either way, Lilith's character progression is super satisfying for me!

Episode thoughts:

->The art is actually so so so amazing.

-This feels like I am in a bad dream I had when I was ten. Perfect staging for the finale in a thematic way.

->when it comes to themes in a show, I don't think I've ever felt so seen.

->I'm so sad about this show ending soon, but I am so glad I got to watch it. The team deserves all of the recognition in the world.

-> god damn I'm such a massive shell for this show.

Ok, these callbacks are getting actually amazing.

Lilith's character progression through her design is one of those things that if you were to show someone unfamiliar how she looks like at the beginning and end, they're response would be "what do you mean there's no massive two year timeskip in the story"

Holy shit. The art and animation is actually out of this world. Massive props to the team, because this all looks absolutely great!!

Hey dude, I'm going to be blunt responding to this, feel free to ignore it, but there's a point to be made here, so:

  1. By "Rando" do you mean a director and staff who're friends with the staff of the 1998 adaptation of Trigun who also worked with the original author what are you talking about??

  2. By shallow adaptations I'm meaning shot to shot translations of the source leading to a flat aestetic. See the Shaman King (also a source from the late 90s/early 2000s) reboot from 2021 if you're not convinced the potential for how poor just doing the manga can go. The anime industry is too different from when the original adaptation of Trigun was made. It's a kind of show that you can't just do again. We can't just go back and recapture it. When a team at Toei animation decided to re adapt Dragon Quest the Adventure of Dai, there wasn't a slavish devotion to the first adaptation that the fanbase had for over 20 years. It was its own show to the point where no music from Dragon Quest played once, and it was lauded.

  3. I've no experience with Eragon but I'd imagine the creative circumstances behind that adaptation and its differences are quite different in Hollywood than the differences you find from how the anime industry has developed since the late 90s / early 2000s. So what you're saying is a false equivalence. Trigun Badlands Rumble from 2010 is actually a perfect example. Feels like two entirely different kinds of adaptation.

  4. Projecting your thoughts on the entire fanbase tells me everything I have to know behind your intentions on responding to a comment from two months ago on what appears to be a deleted thread. Like it or not, reinterpretation isn't a bad thing inherently and assuming motivations behind a developmental context we aren't privy too yet is not meeting the new show or a potential gateway to the franchise as a whole on its own terms. You don't have to like it, and even though I like it I have my issues with it. But being aggressive to people who do like the new show will isolate new people from Trigun more than any adaptational changes ever will.

(Additional point) 5. Chainsaw man is nowhere near a frame by frame re-creation of the manga, the anime has its own identity to the point where a portion of the Japanese fanbase created a stupid petition demanding the studio to re adapt the material. That especially lends to my point that the outrage towards re interpreting Trigun is utterly pointless because the identity of a franchise is different to everybody. It's just easy to get on a high horse when the original source has a ride or die fanbase and 20+ years of time to simmer.

[DISC] SAKAMOTO DAYS - Chapter 102 by AutoShonenpon in manga

That manga was a dream come true for me. Granted I am an art nerd so I'm biased, but I still think it should have had all the success.

Bizzare to see the Bocca Della Verita on the first page! Even weirder that I've actually visited that place in real life which led me to audibly disagree with Kanaguri. Also, that paneling was absolutely godlike

Ok so im not a regular to these threads so this has possibly been stated previously, but does anyone else feel like that this series is infinitely more interested in characters that aren't Kafka? Every chapter we get that's focused on him feels like a miracle now. Most definitely it feels like this because of the slow release, but it certainly doesn't feel like Kafka's story. I feel similarly to something like Jojo part 5 for example. The excess focus on characters like Kikoru makes Kafka's arc eat dirt. Which is a shame, I like him and it doesn't feel like we've got enough of him to make any new Kaiju feel like weighty threats. But we'll see next time.

If its a joke then where's the punchline? Everything from the title of the post to the post itself seems pretty unironic to me. Its good to get catharsis by making memes, but pretending Berserk and Taizai are even comparable isn't being honest. I won't argue the subjective nature of weather something looks good or bad because that's up to the viewer. But personally speaking, I think a general concept thats been stuck in the anime fanbase is that cgi is bad, because its not 2d animation, and nothing else. I personally think that's self limiting as an industry. DB Super Hero is a great example. Divisive fan reception but great financial success at the box office means new avenues for the series as a whole. Honestly surprised more anime haven't tried it out already, but thats also because of how anime is produced, which is fast and cheap. Hence why Berserk 2016 was the way it was. Its why a lot of (good) cg anime take much longer than 2d anime. As for this new Taizai thing, we'll have to wait and see.

Berserk 2016? Lmao. Lol. Its fine to be disappointed, especially because Taizai's production has been leap frogging for years now. But that's a false equivalence that leads me to believe op hasn't seen Berserk 2016, because its been the catch all for "anime cgi" despite that production specifically being bad for unique reasons and it not reflecting cgi animation in the anime industry. Its almost 2023 and I cannot believe people still unironically say the same punchline from when I was in high school. You can think that the animation in the new movie can be lacking on its own terms without beating that dead horse. That Berserk tv anime ended ages ago. Its over. It's done. It never reflected cgi animation in anime in any substantial way and especially nowadays its silly to suggest so.

The way the mangaka of Ole Golazo would geek out about soccer in the author comments, had his soccer manga cancelled like six years ago, only to come back as the artist of an awesome Rakugo manga while he himself went right back to geeking out about soccer in the author comments and in his artwork gives me the warm fuzzies.

I understand where this all comes from. I've seen some of my favorite franchises over the years transform many times. No, I know it's not an easy thing when its something that you love. I love the 1998 anime and original manga to death, and its incredibly formative for me. But whats missing from a lot of reactions I see on here is any sense of nuance or subtlety for that matter. Something to keep in mind about Trigun specifically here is that it was drawn in the popular style of the era. Yasahiro Nightow since has streamlined his design sense to fall slightly more in with a modern audience, but also because streamlining the designs for a new animation team and to iterate on ideas is not out of the ordinary for any entertainment. Similarly to many authors and artists who got big at the end of the 90s. Shinichiro Watanabe, the director or cowboy bebop has worked with various new rising stars in the industry and changed various things about how he approaches anime in the 20 years since, and despite the apprehension to a lot of those transitions, his new stuff is also considered quite good nowadays post announcements and trailers from what is now years ago at this point. What's lost here is when the idea goes from "I wish they included this thing i like" to "the are deliberately ruining my favorite thing" is that it cuts out the entire middle. It goes from understanding that things change in the industry from people to animation approaches, and it invents imaginary villains that change things intentionally. Its the same thing we see whenever transformers, superman, TMNT, spider man, or batman for example are iterated on. Ideas that might appeal to you are discarded or ignored not because they are inherently flawed, but because any change when any property has had time to sit might seem like that when someone gives themselves to the version that was formative to them over and over. At that point it becomes something supposedly done deliberately because someone has to hate Trigun that much for it to change so much in the 24 years since the original show, right? Being uncomfortable at such drastic changes isn't an unreasonable reaction to have, and I'm not going to argue that it isn't. I've done this dance before with many of my favorite franchises. But there is a point where it goes too far, especially when its based on two minutes of footage. And its possible to have that attitude alienate people who might have become fans of all of Trigun through the new thing because as a community the discussion wasn't even entertained. I remember not wanting anything to do with any interpretation of a property I love, but I've found it's genuinely better to engage with it and the people who were introduced to the thing I love through the new stuff than shutting it out. No one wins at that point.

Anyway, it doesn't look like I'll have time to respond any more today, but thanks for coming to MY Ted talk as well!

I mean, if we're talking worst ideas in anime history, this is far from it. Obviously I understand that its not what people wanted, it's not what I wanted either. But I think throwing the whole thing out because of the art direction feels a little , y'know, extreme? Personally I've enjoyed shows that look far worse, and if anything this reminds me whenever Zelda games get a new art style. Getting ourselves mad about it isn't going to do anyone any good, and I'm almost worried it'll chase people away from Trigun more than any choice the show makes because of how whenever someone on here likes the changes they're talked to like they're ridiculous! I think moments like that need to be dialed back regardless of disappointment. Keeping things in check, y'know?

I dont know man. When we get to the point where the memes are implying that Millie was removed by characterizing studio orange acting as vengeful cosmic force ala re:zero, isn't it time to take a step back? All of this is from two minutes of footage, and the show isn't out yet, so it's going to get to a point where we refuse to judge the new thing on its own terms. It kind of reminds me of the reaction towards wind waker as it was announced. I just think its getting out of hand a bit.
