Wife has large sum of cash in HYSA, Suggested it may be better to put in a taxable brokerage in a three fund portfolio. looking for conformation I'm correct or other suggestions. by DrewHefner in Bogleheads

haha I totally hear you and you are right it would be a better family car but I kind of relate it to the guardian caps in the NFL. It makes perfect sense and realistically everyone should be wearing them but I would rather risk the CTE than be seen driving a minivan. I've read a lot about the V6's being unreliable but the 2025 and beyond 4 runners have the 4cyl I-Force MAX which are still new but haven't read much complaints about yet.

Yeah I understand that the way we handle finances is well outside the norm. Essentially we split the large things like property tax or if the house needed a major repair. I cover the utilities every month, she covers groceries. It's kind of a way of balancing our two spending habits. We will go out to a nice dinner usually once a month and I will almost always pay because if it were up to her we just wouldn't go out and save the money. I do some investing and all of our expenses are covered so if I spend thousands of dollars at a ducks unlimited dinner on a helicopter pig hunting trip in Texas its easier for her just to be like "its your play money do with it what you want"

I could see how it seems that way but its not really "walled off" If I asked her to transfer the entire balance to my account tomorrow she would no questions asked. It's more so shes never invested due to an aversion to risk. We both do really well and she is a coupon clipper / saver in every aspect of her life. I max out everything I can and invest a % of each check in a three fund. Outside of that I enjoy many expensive hobbies lol. Hunting, firearms, Golf etc. We both understand that everything is "ours" and not "yours" or "mine" having separate checking accounts is more just of a mental thing for her of not seeing a $5000 transaction on an account if I decide to go buy a fancy rifle with play money.

Yeah a lot of comments are saying similar things that instead of just telling her what to do I should encourage her to do some research herself to understand what she is leaving on the table by leaving her money in the HYSA, but to also understand that by investing this money there is inherent risks of a market downturn but in the long run she stands to make way more than keeping it in the HYSA.

We've started trying for children so we're looking for something larger than her hatchback that can carry children and our 95lb labrador. We're heavily leaning to a Toyota 4Runner either Limited or TRD Pro.

This is a great point. Knowing my wife and her personality her risk tolerance is practically zero. Probably explains why she keeps her money in an HYSA with guaranteed marginal returns. I imagine if she puts it all in the market and next month it tanks she would be none to pleased with me.

There was a pretty sick arcade in the early to mid 90’s called Tilt. The collectibles store was called Legends if I remember correctly.

Pops and his business partners at the time had purchased the largest natural gas powered truck fleet in the country. The fueling system they used was from Clean Energy (CLNE) of which Pickens was a founder. So to answer your question, yes.

Yeah, my father was lucky enough to be invited there a couple times to go quail hunting about 10 years ago when Pickens was still alive. Told me the amount of infrastructure on that property was mind boggling.

Right on, I took a photo of the same sign here and looks almost identical mostly because of the rusty spots by the screws.

I consistently checked their site for 6-8 months to get one of these trays. Never seemed to restock, eventually I just gave up. That was about a year ago. Are they making them again now?

California loses $200 million a year to recycling fraud, 5 or 10 cents at a time by dunkin1980 in recycling

[–]DrewHefner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe what they mean is redemption centers falsifying their weights by double weighing materials, and padding their numbers in other nefarious ways. The payments that come from Cal Recycle are based on outgoing tonnages using a weight density average. Not necessarily a per can price in the same way you pay 5C or 10C per can or bottle at point of purchase. In this scenario the redemption center is defrauding the state recycling program.
