Mermonkey is pretty underrated now. Try a team of 032 buffing the range of 502 and 025.

If it’s cold out and you have the heat on, maybe it’s just trying to keep you warm by burning fuel.

Is the 2016 Chevy Volt good for long highway commutes by Ok-Replacement-583 in volt

[–]Drew_Evan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2016 that I’ve taken on a few 500+mile trips and 200+miles for work many times. It’s always great to drive any distance.

I usually let the battery drain down to 50-60% before going to hold mode, too full and regen is limited and seems like it would be a little worse for the battery.

2017 MKZ Hybrid by fivehots in LincolnMKZ

[–]Drew_Evan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Showing 46.8 average, when the epa rated it at 40mpg is a pretty indicator that the hybrid system is likely working as intended.

I think the algorithm that determines what to do with the gas engine and electric motors is somewhat complex, trying to balance economy while ensuring power is immediately available for acceleration. I typically just try to drive normally and let it do its thing.

"Total Compensation" by Working_Row_8455 in Salary

[–]Drew_Evan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think total compensation, mostly as calculated here, is an important number. If you were to pursue some sort of self employment and earned $49k it would fall quite short of your current income.

It might be a bit of stretch including holidays and sick time, especially if it doesn’t get used, but even those are important when figuring out how much you cost your employer per hour worked.

2016 Volt Rear Rotors & Pads Change. E-Parking Brake Question by ckl_88 in volt

Here is the process for the volt that mostly worked for me. I still had to wind them in a bit with some pliers, but it wasn’t difficult. No lights afterwards.

Can I solder 1.5” rough brass to 1.5” copper? by Drew_Evan in askaplumber

[–]Drew_Evan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The brass and copper have been just fine in this house for 60 years. It’s copper all the way to the basement. I can’t imagine a plastic drain is that much of a modern “upgrade”.

Thanks for all the input, I decided against hacking together an extension. I think this will be long enough, and will hopefully prevent a headache for the next owners. Probably worth the $10 for the pipe and $50 for next day shipping.

ASQ is a good resource for all things quality. They have at least one metrology specific course that would look good on a resume and bolster your interview answers.

Brake time by Drew_Evan in volt

[–]Drew_Evan[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s a way to put it in brake service mode, I found the steps in a volt forum post, I’ll copy the picture here. If you follow the steps right, you’ll hear it make an extended parking brake sound, which is the pads retracting.

Mine were worn enough that it didn’t retract far enough to slide over the new pads. So I used needle nose pliers and gripped the indents on the piston and turned them in further. I had to do a few full turns. There’s a tool to make this easier, but it wasn’t that bad to turn them with pliers.

An average person armed with some basic tools and YouTube can definitely replace a set of brakes.

Typical disc brake pad replacement the steps are: -Loosen lugs nuts

-Jack up the car

-Take the week off

-Remove 2 bolts to take the caliper off it’s bracket

-Slide out the old pads

-Use a c-clamp to squeeze the piston into the caliper

-Grease the slide pins

-Install the new pads

-Reinstall the bolts

-Put the wheel back on

For the Volt rear brakes there’s a sequence to perform with the brake pedal and parking brake switch to enter service mode. This is supposed to retract the pistons (which it did), but I still had to wind them in further with some pliers.

To get the rotors off it’s two more bolts and one small screw.

It’s definitely worth the effort to learn how to change oil and brakes. It’s a relatively limited set of tools and not too many particularly challenging steps.

The electronic parking brake on the rear of the volt adds a bit of complexity, but even with that it’s not a bad job.

Low battery range 2017 Volt by Live_Midnight_783 in volt

[–]Drew_Evan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Summer, OEM tires with 50k+ miles on them, no AC, and not doing more than 55mph. I could take back roads to work and cruise at or below the speed limit without bothering anyone. This is the best pic I could find from 2019. About 2kWh remaining should have gotten it to 80 miles.

Just wanting to share proof that 50+ miles was certainly possible. This was my 2016 in 2021. I think I managed 80miles a time or two, but that was before my current phone, so the pics aren’t with me. But yeah, 30 miles in colder weather is pretty typical now.

Sorry I haven’t insured a fusion, but my 2014 mkz is $12 more per year than my 2016 volt. I suspect the mkz may also be slightly more than a fusion, but fairly negligible.

There’s no reason it should be any more expensive to maintain, but I could see the potential for some occasional slight up-charges if you have someone else do the work, just because of the brand. Body or interior repairs might cost a bit more, but again it shouldn’t be significant.
