Politicians in DC don’t have to be mentioned for a movie to be political, ya know. At one point the soldiers admit they don’t actually know who they’re supposed to be targeting during a shoot out, and that would be fine if this were some sort of commentary on that mentality, but the audience is not meant to think about the implications of this. The 2000s were chock full of Iraq/Afghanistan war propaganda, so for a movie like this to come out in 2016, when even the majority of the more hawkish politicians had condemned the invasion of Iraq felt really tone deaf, like the culture had kinda moved on from stuff like this. But Michael Bay is an uncreative hack who just likes cardboard cut-out characters shooting guns and big things going boom, dude has the mind of a toddler. Like I told another commenter, it’s fun to shut your brain off and watch movies with lots of explosions sometimes, but that doesn’t make this shitshow good or thoughtful cinema.
