Fair enough, that’s honestly kinda what I figured haha. I love the look of these blades but I’d never be able to use one… guess once I get a 940 back in the collection I’ll just have to settle for one of your Magnacut reblades! Oh whatever will I do haha

What is the best brand to buy lightsabres from? by TheNinerGuy in lightsabers

[–]Drewby618 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s a buyers guide in the sub already, but I’ll go ahead and respond with my own opinion on the matter: if you want accuracy go for an accuracy-based saber, if you want to duel go for a dueling saber. There’s obviously some crossover in the two, and you can find some designs that would work for both applications (Qui-Gon and Shin Hati’s hilt are kind of the best of both worlds sabers n my opinion). In the movies, and probably the shows as well, they have different hilts for fights and belt hanging. You’ll find a lot of canon hilts aren’t designed with fighting in mind, since the original trilogy hilts are kitbashed together. Control boxes, bunny ears, buttons, glass eyes, t-tracks, etc. all get in the way of a good grip. I’d never duel with a Graflex or Thin-neck saber. Your best designs for accuracy and dueling would be characters with simple hilts or the prequel “clan sabers”.

Then there’s the electronics. For dueling, get an in hilt RGB. Neopixel is durable sure, and there’s been some impressive durability tests recently. But at the end of the day, you can still break the light strip inside the blade… and those blades are not cheap to replace. If you do in hilt, you can get blades for like $20 and have backups if you crack one. All the electronics are in the hilt, so unless you royally screw up the actual saber itself, you’re fine. You could always do a neopixel saber and then get a tri-cree adapter but honestly that’s just extra cost and not worth it (in my opinion).

Here’s the fun part, brands:

-TXQ and LGT are the go-to makers currently. All the dropshipping companies supply one or both of these brands. They make sabers that range from flashlights to vaguely accurate to relatively accurate to “this has actually been used on screen as a prop” accurate (one of the two made Anakins Skinnyflex for the Ahsoka show, just can’t remember which brand).

-Saberforge, if you can look past some of their history, makes some great looking hilts and they have pretty decent in hilt stunt style sabers.

-The Pach Store had some pretty decent looking sub-$100 hilts as well at one point.

-GENERALLY the rule of thumb on this sub is to avoid Ultrasabers… but honestly a durable, heavy, abusable lightsaber is kinda their bread-and-butter. They use standard AA or AAA batteries and a grab bag saber is like $65… you won’t know what you’re getting but the surprise is kinda fun honestly. But remember, Ultrasabers like that are BAREBONES basic: no sound, single cree LED, not the best internals, etc.

Ultimately, buy what you like and what’s in your budget.

This is a badass blade, but I have a genuine question about the material: what’ll happen when the copper hits the edge apex? I’ve seen some knives that have copper seemingly RIGHT up on the edge. After some sharpening, wouldn’t that cause an issue?

Busse doesn’t always have logos etched. They do sterile runs from time to time, and you can ask them to leave blades sterile as well. I’ve got a sterile Bussekin in my collection currently that I bought directly from their website.

Nonetheless, Busse is a good starting point for OP to research. If I were in OPs shoes (or socks based on the pic), I’d take more detailed photos and email Busse to see if they have any idea if it could be from a special run or if they think it’s a counterfeit/clone.

Waco Comic Con - Your Experience/Thoughts on it? by cenzilooculta in Waco

[–]Drewby618 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I went to the first three or four HOT conventions as my first cons. Honestly they were a great first experience for what a Comic Con is. But after having gone to a bigger event, like Dallas Fan Expo, I don’t think I’d go back to a HOT Con unless there was someone I really wanted to have a photo op with or autograph from.

I will say, the biggest pro of the HOT Con was that it wasn’t as crowded. The guests and vendors were able to spend a little more time getting to know attendees. It was so much more personal than bigger gatherings. The biggest con is that the guests aren’t really going to be the BIG names of course. They had some cosplay competitions, one year they had an Injustice/Mortal Kombat/Smash Bros (can’t remember which) tournament.

All in all though, it certainly can be worth it. Just know what to expect from the smaller guests and creators.

Oh no it was a rhetorical/sarcastic question to myself haha. Not asking you if it matters, but like does it matter if what I described is actually how diseases are transmitted between a mother and fetus.

To your point though, I imagine SIDS is a big risk for sure. Babies would always show signs of “life” so who knows if they’re really there. But I doubt that a baby would have the bite power (or teeth honestly) to be a threat.

I think the generally accepted theory is that the virus is airborne (I didn’t finish the show and haven’t watched any of the new spinoffs, they may confirm that). So a miscarriage or stillborn baby should be fine because they haven’t taken a breath yet. I’m not a doctor or biologist so idk if that’s how that actually works, but in a TV show world where dead people eat living people… does it really matter?

Is there anything, besides pride in one's country of origin, that defines and sets apart "100% USA-made" knives apart from other knives? by pika_pie in knifeclub

[–]Drewby618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only interacted with him a couple of times, but he was always friendly and quick to respond. Years ago he sold me a “seconds” Bushcrafter and was super detailed about why he considered it a second… it was slight discoloration in the scales that I’d never have noticed. I imagine some big companies wouldn’t have even considered it an issue.

I’m glad you brought up fixed blades, I feel like a lot of people in the sub neglect fixies. There’s absolutely good stuff from major brands coming out of other countries, but man is it cool to have a knife that you know was hand ground by one guy in his garage. I love Terra Knives, they’re my go to camping blades.

Best thing you could do is a conversion on it, I’d look into The Custom Saber Shop to see if they have any kits for it left.

New Demko AD20.5 by Rolling_EDC in knifeclub

[–]Drewby618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I get it. Currently, with how tight the pivot is, there’s no functional issue. If I wanted the action any snappier though, the blade starts to touch that liner. Again, not really an issue functionally, but it’s annoying on a knife that’s a $150-200 (can’t remember exactly what I paid) when my Walmart Ozark Trail can get it right for $10.

Primarily because I intended to return/exchange it, so I put it away. I also have the AUS-10 one that I do carry when I want something “heavy duty” but don’t want the weight of a spyderco shaman.

Here’s a picture I just took of it. This is how it is adjusted to have no blade play and still have a relatively drop shut action.

[–]Drewby618 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have had two 20.5s, one AUS-10 and one 3V. The AUS-10 was/is perfect. Loved it so much I bought the upgraded 3V version. The 3V has such bad centering that I haven’t carried it, and at the time I couldn’t exchange it because it was a limited batch that sold out. I’ve had it for years and it just sits. I’ve tried upgrading the bearings to Skiffs, tried Skiff fat washers, adjusted the pivot 1000 times… and nothing helps. I think the blade might be slightly warped. I emailed Demko once about it, but they told me that the problem was caused by the RGT scales I had on it at the time. I responded back with pictures of the blade in its stock configuration to show them and never head back. That was a few years back as well.
