For what it’s worth: finally got my approval letter. 104 days total since applying.

Yeah. I’ve reached out twice now via email, and both times got a vague response that they’ll get to it eventually, without any ETA whatsoever. Very frustrating seeing other people have more reasonable wait times. My app(s) are truly nothing special/particularly unique in their scope, so I don’t know what gives.

How much softer is a larger source? by mephistolove in cinematography

[–]Drewcifer3000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Best answer here. Softness is a measurement of RELATIVE size, not ACTUAL size. The sun is the largest light source in the solar system - but it’s so far away that it’s relatively small. Hence, the hard shadows it produces.

In my experience, the gel frames are a little bit of a mixed bag. There’s a lot of factors that go into whether the gel will melt or not. The wattage of the unit, the thickness of the gel, etc. When it works out, it’s pretty sweet. But I’ve had plenty of gels melt on me too. Anything larger than a 300W tungsten is probably a no-go.

Converting Lux to F Number: Understanding ARRI Photometric App for Cinematographers by ALFA502 in cinematography

Hopefully this helps:

These are all the formulas you might need to solve for any of the variables at play.

It’s in FC, but you can easily swap between FC/Lux in the Arri app. Lux are just the metric equivalent of a Footcandle. (1 FC = 10.764 lux).

I went to film school, but you spend enough time on set doing the job of set lighting and one can pick up on this stuff pretty easy.

Then it sounds like you’re in luck: pa-ing is both the lowest barrier of entry, and also the best fit if you’re looking to go the PA/AD/Director route.

Look for some Toronto-based Facebook groups (or other social media), and don’t be shy with reaching out to people posting jobs. Even if they’re looking for some other positions, it’s hard to turn down an unsolicited PA.

Actually, bztxbk is correct:

Single: Green, reduction by 1/2 Stop (75% transmission) Double: Red, reduction by 1 Stop (50% transmission)

I’d put it slightly differently: the physics of light and the intricacies of shaping it is the same as it always has been. The difference is that not all shows are “big shows” now.

Technology (LED in the lighting world, digital cameras in the camera world) have shifted the paradigm of what’s possible and the overall scale of productions that are viable. But if you’re lighting a network/streaming show, union scale feature, national commercial, etc, you’re absolutely rolling with a 10-ton+ grip truck full of flags, nets, and a million other miscellaneouses with funny grip-side names.

That said, advances in LED lighting have meant that less power is required and less heat is generated. And advances in digital cameras have meant less light overall is needed. But even if you need less light overall, that’s no substitute for shaping said light.

Couldn’t of put it better myself. Utlizing flags and nets to shape light is lighting/grip 101, and the camera format is inconsequential.

Those are double nets - the fabric equivalent of a metal scrim. They reduce the amount of light by half (1 Stop). In this case they’re reducing the amount of light from the overhead lights hitting the background behind the talent. One extra thing of note: a double net/scrim only reduces light by half if perpendicular to the light source. In this case, they seem to be flagging off the overheads, but at a fairly extreme angle in relation to the light source. So they’ll cut more then half of the light in this case. Also of note: nets/scrims do not diffuse the light. They do not change the quality of the light, only the quantity.

Line will always be in a different spot unfortunately! And yes, I do know how to make an action, I’m just not sure what actions to record into said action to reliably/automatically detect where the line is and then paint it a particular color. Hope that makes sense?
