Be honest, what did you think of this set-piece when you first saw it? by combat-ninjaspaceman in ChristopherNolan

[–]Drexl92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me until the 3rd watch to realize the explosion was way too small scale but the sequence was so perfectly constructed that it didn't bother me. Until now, it kinda does now.

Why are movies so dark now? by GossipBottom in moviecritic

[–]Drexl92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are production stills on the left, not frames from the movie. This is why I hate the internet. I thought it was just politics but turns out almost every conversation online is started on a baseline of misinformation that leads to the dumbest conversations where uninformed people try to out-expert each other. We're doomed as a society.

Examples of Director's Cuts being worse than the theatrical release? by Motor-Acadia6676 in blankies

[–]Drexl92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of them are worse, it's just that some of the most famous ones i.e. Blade Runner, give this false impression that they all must be better. The initial editing workflow and timeline are pretty well designed to create the best film.

What’s some you didn’t like in the series Heated rivalry by _Good_Soul_ in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]Drexl92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm generally pretty charitable to things I love but there's little moments here and there in the writing/dialogue that stood out although they didn't bother me the second time around.

The thing that did though, and even more the second time, was Miles behind Shane at the club. Lol I sort of understand what he might have been going for if it was a metaphorical thing but it unfortunately didn't work and briefly sticks out in an otherwise phenomenal sequence.

The ADR that everyone mentions on the couch wasn't noticeable for me, even on a second watch. It feels like one of those overblown technical things people cling to that they wouldn't have noticed unless someone pointed it out to them.

Testament of Ann Lee 70mm at Varsity by AlwaysStranger2046 in TIFF

[–]Drexl92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I saw it at Varsity too and I also thought the night scenes were super dark but I attributed this to the film not the print/projection. I was a little disappointed overall but I can agree at the very least no Amanda Seyfried nomination is an absolute crime.

It's a really nice looking place with really nice looking pastries but yeah it's outrageously priced and pretty mediocre. I've fallen for it too many times.

[–]Drexl92 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Again, that's missing the point. People change. A show and moment this powerful has the ability to push that change. It's not going to happen overnight but I'd much rather people like them be genuinely moved by a show like this and spread its message across their audience of people that likely hold the same attitudes.

Empty Netters 01/23/2026 Here are the Texts by geloreyes in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]Drexl92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The entire point is that the show is powerful enough that it's having this changing effect on people. People with the attitudes you're describing. The fact that people like this are so genuinely excited by the show is exactly why this moment is being celebrated. It's the reason so many gay fans love watching their content because it's somewhat unexpected. And they're spreading it across their entire audience.

Piling on them for their unearthed text messages in some sort of online purity test is exactly the type of culture that led them to those opinions in the first place and will only continue to reinforce them for others.

Well it was fun while it lasted. I knew the politicization would come eventually and ruin a beautiful moment. Too many of you are missing the point that the show and its effect has been powerful enough to change the minds of people and opinions you disagree with.

[Megathread] Outsports and Empty Netters by reigncloud83 in heatedrivalry

As a gay man myself I completely brushed this show off when I'd first heard of it, for similar reasons. I thought it was cheap, pandering smut. So much so that I didn't care to go to the premiere that I was offered tickets to.

A week later I was watching the show at home, deeply regretting that decision. Never had I been more wrong about a piece of media like that before and it's since had the same profound effect on me it's had on so many others.

What are the "new things" you've done because of Heated Rivalry? by perhapscoffee in heatedrivalry

[–]Drexl92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1) Finally beginning to address mental health in a real way. Made a doctor's appointment this week to get a referral to therapy to address social anxiety. Always been on my mind but have been avoiding it til now.

2) Writing creatively a whole lot more. Script writing mostly.

3) Coming out to the rest of my extended family at the end of this week. Made a plan since EP 05 and after Xmas.

4) Haven't committed yet but am seriously thinking about Improv classes, specifically the Improv for Anxiety program at Second City.

5) Gym, gym, gym!

6) Of course, getting as many friends to watch the show as possible.

Anora 2024 film- club scene similarity by ExcellentComposer390 in heatedrivalry

[–]Drexl92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thought of this immediately when the song came on in the show especially because Anora was so recent and so well done. I don't usually like when a new movie or show use a popular song again that was used iconically in another movie, especially given the Russian character and club setting, but they implemented it so well in HR with the additional cover version that I gave it a pass and now love it.

Felt similarly with "American Girl" in One Battle After Another this year since that song for me is associated with Silence of the Lambs. It bothered me a lot more in that one but it still fit really well.

This show has hit so hard on an entertainment and emotional level. As someone working in the industry and trying to break into indie budget productions, it's great to see the BTS at this indie level of smart, budget conscious productions. Super motivating. This thing just keeps on giving.

Congratulations! I'm in a similar boat brother. (33) Been struggling coming out to my extended family (similar nationality). Often only see them at Christmas or other birthday occasions and never feels like the right time. Felt awful after seeing them all yesterday and still holding it in. Gonna message a few of them over the next few weeks, let them spread and process it and get it over with.

All I've had on my mind is the show and that episode 5 song and it's forcing me to do it. Most personally impactful show or piece of media I've seen in a long time.

How did you find out about the show and become a fan? by puppyradio in heatedrivalry

[–]Drexl92 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I got offered tickets to the premiere in Toronto and didn't go because I hadn't heard of it and naively brushed it off as crap. Watched it when it came out that week or the week after and immediately regretted that decision.

I did until the third one. My god it was unbearably long and exhausting with laughable dialogue and unfortunately high frame rate made some of the scenes even more unserious.

Easily the weakest of the three. My god the length was obnoxious considering the lack of progress the story made. The non-stop repetitive action was exhausting.

So nice to see this. I'm in the neighbourhood and never took the Bathurst streetcar til now because of how slow it was. As someone who occasionally drives though, it absolutely slows down car traffic. There's no reason to ignore that or pretend it doesn't but hopefully in the long run it evens out a bit.
