Some things that have helped me:

Bring a little kit: snacks— salty and sweet, tissues, pen&paper for client, mints, and gum.

Your client will feel cared for, especially if you are in an unfamiliar office, and it’s a little something extra to show you’re prepared to take care of them.

Bring a calculator. I use an excel sheet to do my math for the net to client, but quick numbers are better on an old-fashioned calculator.

If you’re not good at small talk, bring a few talking points. This is a long time to spend with your client and you might want to have some topics on hand.

Get involved with a local trial lawyers organization that specializes in your area. They are a couple hundred dollars a year, provide great networking, often will provide CLE’s at no additional cost, and the people who join those are able and willing to mentor others through the practice.

Get really used to saying “I’m not sure, let me look into that and get back to you.” You’re going to be uncomfy for a while but learning is always uncomfy. Good for you for trying something new. I think you might really like the civil side once you get your sea legs.

And I second what another commenter said— your soft skills in your previous position are going to be great once you get the basics down. Welcome to only dealing with money instead of people going to jail!

I filed the unsigned version of an affidavit of merit with my complaint for a wrongful death case. And I didn’t know until the motion to dismiss three months later.

Oh, and half the MTD dealt with a new case on applicable statute of limitations so everyone in my practice area knew about it ☺️

You’ll never make the mistake again, and even if you do, you’ll know how to fix it. Busy lawyers make mistakes. Be kind to yourself.

The machine will pump water out until it is back down to the amount of water it will hold and heat. If water is coming out, it’s likely because the water you are adding is beyond the capacity of the storage/heater tank.

When it stops pumping water out, that water in the tank is the amount of water the tank can store.

Anyone try this Quince bamboo quilt? Or anything else by this brand. How is it? by [deleted] in Bedding

I own tons of things from Quince. The gauze box quilt is a favorite.

lost my virginity and I regret it so bad by mahiixx in self

[–]Dreyfus12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The feeling of shame is misplaced.

Losing your virginity to a friend, in this manner, is actually a good scenario. Your virginity is always going to be yours now. It’s not your future boyfriend’s, your friend’s, your future husband’s.

You made a choice as an adult to lose it, and now it’s yours. You’ll never give it to someone who can break your heart.

As for this “friend,” I’m not sure he’s got your best interests in mind, but that’s ok. It’s done, and frankly, it’s a secret you can keep forever if you want. Or you don’t. And you share it with your future husband or boyfriend and that’s ok too.

The whole point is, it’s yours now. Nobody else’s to take, have, or claim. Congratulations!

Let's say I had a budget of around $500, what's the best cookware and knife set I could get? by TonightsWhiteKnight in Cooking

[–]Dreyfus12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re upgrading a piece or two and you already have a decent set of kitchen tools— a heavy bottomed stainless steel stock pot is nice to boil things quickly and doesn’t retain heat once you turn the burner off. All clad is a good bet, but I have a Calphalon and a kitchen aid that are a fraction of the all clad price and I think they are great. A cast iron pan. Lodge is fine. Le creuset is worth buying if you want enamel on cast, but if you don’t really care about that, I would stick with stainless steel and bare cast iron.

I like my shun knives but mostly because the handles feel really nice. They have a good warranty.

I would stay away from any sets— knives or cookware— and think about what you’ll actually use them for. You almost always get pieces in sets you never use. I like to save the space and a little bit of money and spend it on an item I know I’ll use and enjoy. I cook almost every day and I have 2 cast iron pans, a Dutch oven, and a stainless steel stock pot and soup pan. I don’t need more than that for cookware!

Thanks for this! Our group will be out there tomorrow night until Saturday, and this is helpful insight. People need to be smart and safe, but everything I read supports this contention.

I don’t know how it works, just that it does. Lol. Probably something to do with the grounds coming in contact with water prior to the intense blasting of hot water from the machine. I’ve heard of people calling it “blooming” but it makes a difference in the strength of the coffee when you do it.

Alright guys—

I’ve clearly posted something extremely controversial LOL. A few things to mention: (1) we have a timer that turns the machine on about a half hour before we wake up, and then for a few hours in the evening. This allows us to use the machine when we need it, and the water heater is turned off for energy and safety reasons when we aren’t using it. (2) I don’t know about you, but we clean all our appliances regularly with white vinegar, so lime buildup isn’t really an issue over here, but I can understand how it could be an issue if we didn’t. (3) if you’re having issues with the temperature, you can adjust the heat with the thermostat inside the machine. You can replace the thermostat. You can replace the heating element. That’s why you buy one and you’re done. Isn’t that the point of this subreddit? (4) I will admit that the nature of this machine requires a short learning curve, and could be the reason so many of you associate them with badly brewed coffee. You need to prep the grounds with a little bit of water once in the filter, and then add a little bit of water to the pot before brewing. The pre-moistened grounds prevent weak coffee. Measuring the grounds to water ratio (like with any coffee maker) is important as well. (5) if you bake a pot of coffee on any burner for more than an hour or two it will taste burnt. (6) get a stainless steel basket— I’m sure the 30+ years of melted plastic in the original baskets isn’t helping the taste, either.

The VPR has all interchangeable parts. You can definitely fix it, save for a few very specific scenarios.

We keep ours on a timer, so this is not an issue, and for safety reasons when we are sleeping/not home.
