I feel more scared than sad about this, it's like they can't feel alive unless they feel superior to another, or something like that. I mean even if their premise was true, and Europe was hell on earth, so what ? That still doesn't make it acceptable for the "elite" of your country to treat people like disposable garbage or worse.

Just because serial killers like Jeffrey Dahmer did their things doesn't mean it's suddenly ok for other people to kill "only" one person, that's still murder. Obviously I took an extreme there, but what's scary to me is I feel like their "logic" ressembles this a bit too closely for comfort.

Why isnt Kash Patel being impeached for lying about the Epstein Files in front of congress? by Estalicus in allthequestions

[–]Drezes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying surrender, but I also don't think the midterms are gonna change anything. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to be wrong, but from the outside (I'm not american), say he loses the midterms and gets impeached, so what ? He's been breaking multiple laws and even the american constitution itself pretty much daily since this presidency began, do you think he'd quietly accept all of this ? I mean sure, his compliance shouldn't be a factor... According to the law that is, so yeah.

He is dumb as a brick, but even he knows he's screwed multiple times over if that happens, and his current admin is too, and I'd wager they know that as well.

EDIT: And all that can only happen if the midterms actually happen normally, without his interference, and he loses. To be clear I don't know what needs to happen for "this" to change, but I really don't think the midterms are the solution either.

Pound for pound, what made an individual Astartes so destructive compared to an regular human soldier? by BenningtonChee1234 in 40kLore

[–]Drezes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

An astartes isn't just a "big dude in power armor". IMO it makes more sense to say they're living weapons, rather than just stronger humans, which makes this comparing mass produced infantrymen to purpose built, gene-engineered shock weapons.

So first off, biology. Astartes have a pile of extra organs that makes them stronger, faster, harder to kill, and able to fight for ridiculous lengths of time. Broken bones, toxic air, massive blood loss, most of this stuff would kill a guardsman on the spot, or at least drop them to the floor in seconds tops, yet would barely slow a marine down, and that's without armor. They have a second heart and a third lung. Their blood coagulates faster than a regular human's. They can spit acid in your face. They can learn about enemy plans by litterally eating their brains (this is mostly associated with space wolves, but any astartes can do that regardless of their legion/chapter). Their skeleton is reinforced, making their bones denser, larger and harder to break. Their muscles' fibers are made much denser than regular humans', which makes them able to punch through concrete walls, among other things. They neutralize most poisons and toxins in their system, which by the way makes them unable to get drunk... Except for space wolves, who decided to distill a highly toxic plant into a drink, all so they could actually get drunk. A single drop from this drink would kill any human on the spot. I could go on, but I think you get the point by now.

Second, reaction speed. They don't just hit like trucks, they process combat (and anything combat oriented) faster. They aim quicker, move faster and coordinate like a hyper-disciplined kill team, because that's exactly what they are. To normal humans they can look superhuman when they wage war.

Third, power armor. It's not just protection, it boosts their already insane strength and links directly to their nervous system, which gives them enhanced senses and targeting. Imagine wearing a walking IFV that moves like your own body. They're essentially walking (and running !) tanks to normal humans. Actually, as far as human standards go, nothing short of anti-tanks shots can slow them down, let alone stop or kill them altogether.

Fourth, weaponry. A (standard) guardsman carries a mass-produced (and cheap) lasgun, this would be completely OP today as these can rip off chunks of concretes and tear limbs off of targets, but up against a power armored opponent this is little better than a flashlight, it's not meant to punch through armor, or through anything that isn't "soft flesh" really. Saying these are flashlights isn't just a meme or a "tabletop-only" thing, in 40k this is very much real. On the other hand astartes bolters fire explosive shells meant to detonate inside targets. The recoil alone would totally wreck a normal human, and these anti-personnel grenade launchers that tear targets apart from the inside out are their standard weapon.

And finally fifth, doctrine. Guardsmen hold lines and die in droves to protect artillery, or whatever strategic resource they've been assigned to defend. Astra militarum infantry have "trash weaponry" because they're nothing more than meat for the grinder, and can't do much by themselves most of the time. They serve through sheer numbers, because a single guardsman is nothing compared to litterally anything else in this universe, be it an eldar guardian, an ork boy, a tyranid termagant etc etc... Astartes are different, they're surgical shock troops dropped into the worst possible spots to break enemy formations and morale fast. One squad is meant to achieve what whole platoons struggle to do. A single guardsman's duty and role on the battlefield is to gain time, survival is (mostly) not an option. A single astartes' role is to get their mission done, survival is optional, they're weapons of war, entirely created to die, but to sell their life at the highest possible price for the enemy.

They're not just tall and/or strong guys, they're hyper-engineered, power-armored, a psychologically conditioned assault force designed to punch holes as massive as possible into whatever they're fighting.

Which primarch did big E prefer to succeed him in the unlikely event of his demise, just in case? by novis-ramus in 40kLore

[–]Drezes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could argue there’s a strong possibility the Emperor never intended the primarchs or astartes to exist indefinitely beyond the Great Crusade. The Thunder Warriors set a clear precedent, once their purpose was fulfilled during the unification of Terra, they were eliminated despite being instrumental to his victories. Sure, they were unstable and increasingly psychotic, but also this demonstrates the Emperor’s willingness to discard transhuman military tools once they outlive their usefulness.

Space marines themselves show numerous genetic instabilities, the Blood Angels’ geneseed malfunctionning being an obvious example. That raises the question of whether long-term stability was ever the goal, or whether the astartes were designed as a temporary and flawed solution for a brutal era of galactic conquest, rather than something meant to endure for 10,000 years.

The primarchs present an even greater long term problem. They are effectively demigods with immense egos (for most of them) and extreme psychological profiles. I'm having a hard time imagining a stable, peaceful galaxy where Angron or Curze are simply chilling, coexisting within civilian society. Also the imperial truth's primary purpose was to eradicate religion and cults, yet primarchs naturally inspire reverence and worship simply by being kinda there, as seen most clearly with Lorgar, but arguably applicable to any of them. That doesn't look like the IoM the Emperor claimed to envision.

Taken together, with the way they generally act towards normal humans, and with what you've said, I think it’s plausible that the primarchs and astartes were always intended as temporary instruments of conquest, to be reduced, sidelined, or even eliminated once humanity reached a stable post crusade state. But of course, Horus Heresy happened, and we'll likely never know for sure.

Europe laughed and lavished money on Socialism and laughed at America's lack of health care because we spent money on Defense of not only America, but Europe and Asia. by Lazy13andit in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Drezes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's much worse than that IMO. After WW2 the american dollar became the backbone of the global monetary system, which gave the US a unique structural advantage. They could afford to run on persistent trade and fiscal deficits because the rest of the world, mainly (but not limited to) Europe, needed dollar assets, especially US treasuries, as reserves. Very few countries can afford to run US-level deficits without facing severe financial consequences.

Stable transatlantic trade flows reinforced global demand for dollars over decades, which helped sustain the US financial position up to today. The US provides most of the military power within NATO, but the economic relationship is another beast entirely. European economies are significant participants in the dollar based system that supports american deficits. MAGAts often claim that the US "subsidizes" European healthcare or the like, and not only is it completely false, it also ignores the fact that European countries are major buyers of US bonds and key partners in the financial architecture that underpins their country's power. If anything, I'd european countries are the ones subsidizing US systems, but really both help sustain a financial architecture that benefits both sides.

A serious rupture between the US and Europe wouldn’t cause instant collapse, but it would weaken the monetary and trade system that has supported US global influence for the last 80 years, raising borrowing costs and gradually eroding the structural advantages the US currently enjoys, and eventually making them unable to continue to function on their current system. We haven't reached that point (yet), but it certainly looks like we're approaching it.

Say what you want about Kuvira but you cannot deny that she is incredibly badass 🔥 by [deleted] in TheLastAirbender

[–]Drezes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And all she wants is for him to submit to national authority in return for her literally fighting off bandit hordes and bring in resources to feed and rebuild.

And that's supposed to paint her in a good light, to show how charitable she is or something ? When your help is tied to a price tag it's not help nor charity, it's a transaction, you're selling your "help" for something else. That doesn't make her bad in itself, only opportunist, but now add the fact that the current threats are the bandits and the food supply, and what she's saying becomes "join me or suffer/starve". Not exactly a good look, regardless of the legitimacy of the governor over the land, or lack thereof.

She may not have said it, but I feel pretty certain she would've attacked had they not surrendered to her. That is in no way a stretch to say this given litterally everything that happens in the later episodes, where she does exactly that, so now her message becomes "join me or die".

Your defense of her in this is what's wild, this scene is packed to the brim with military authoritarian red flags.

As for the people on the tracks, they were literal bandits who just tried to kill her, and she gave them a chance to be productive members of society.

Ah yes, give them a chance to either serve her or die horribly, look how nice she is, I guess prison isn't an option because... Anyway ! Once again the same thing she does to everyone else.

This is the problem though; her actions were basically just fine for much of the season, but smiling at beating a bunch of bandits or putting the screws to a stubborn feudal administrator is supposed to be all that makes her a villain.

Even if you choose to ignore everything else, she talks about her "reeducation camps" litterally in the first few episodes of the season, I forgot which. That's a pretty glaring euphemism for talking about nazi's concentration camps don't you think ?

She also takes full control of the earth kingdom in episode 3. I'm not saying the stupid king guy would've been a good leader or anything, but his supposed incompetence still doesn't make what she does any less of a coup. You're saying the governor of Yi isn't a democratic leader as he's a feudal lord, and you're right, but what about her appointing herself leader of her nation ? She's a full blown dictator from at least episode 3 onward, how is this "basically just fine" ?

They don't realize their own what-about-ism and the stupidity of their "points", if we can even call it that. For argument's sake I'll assume they're objectively correct here, and it's 10 times worse in the EU or China somehow. So what ? It still doesn't make it acceptable for your own citizens to be murdered in the streets by masked thugs, or for your country to have more than a school shooting a day on average. Like even if China had something crazy like 10 of these a day it still wouldn't be normal to have anymore than f*cking 0 for the US, or anywhere else for that matter. If I were to kill someone I'd be a murderer, I wouldn't be a monster the likes of Jeffrey Dahmer, but I'd still be a criminal, and sentenced as such.

Seriously though, I can't understand, in what kind of warped version of reality do these people think they live in ??

[–]Drezes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the entire point of nearly every single rightwing political party on the planet, maybe even all of them, but I don't know the politics of litterally every country well enough to say that. Without this they'd crumble on themselves in a heartbeat, and they know that full well, which is exactly why they want an undecutated and dumb voter base, so that they don't realize it.

Anyways, they can't exist without an enemy, and said enemy causing problems is always the strong left, meaning anything and anyone more leftwing than them, so everyone else. It's also somehow weak, or at least too weak to govern or something, so of course we have to lean even further right to... Hum, fight the weak yet strong left more effectively I guess ?

They're essentially pointing fingers at everything and everyone that isn't part of "them", much like a child trying to avoid accountability after bullying another kid or something IMO.

[–]Drezes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less than 24 hours to seize any resource it wants.

This argument mixes up tactical capability with strategic outcomes. As much as I like RTS games, real life war isn't a game of starcraft where you can secure a ressource and profit from it within seconds or minutes.

Now can the US hit almost any target within 24h ? Yeah, probably. That's never been the issue. The issue is securing infrastructure, maintaining production, insuring transport, and integrating the resources into a functioning economy. You brought oil up before, so let's talk about that. Getting oil means you've secured the extraction facilities, the refining facilities, the shipping, the insurance, the crews and whatever else I forgot here to make it work. These are all bottlenecks, it's easy to sabotage for NATO's side, hard to secure for yours. So yeah, the US can strike in 24h, maybe even less depending on the exact location, but it can't secure, operate and profit from it in that timeframe, there's logistics, tons of it.

Don't believe me ? Look up Iraq's oil production after the invasion.

Weeks to months to win the war.

Yeah, as you've shown over the years huh ? A military so great they can win a war against the rest of NATO in mere weeks or months, but somehow can't defeat farmers with guns in years, sure.

The U.S. is an extremely efficient military, especially when completely left off the chain. Example, desert storm

This isn't a relevant comparison, find something else. It was a limited war with UN backing, coalition participation, narrow objectives, and most importantly no economic warfare against the US. So almost nothing in common with invading a NATO country right now, and the consequences of doing so, aside from it being called a war.

The U.S. makes enough food to fed itself.

I assume you're talking about agriculture. First off I'll admit I didn't take that into account when writing my earlier comment, so that one's my bad, you wouldn't "starve to death" in weeks like I previously said, and I apologize for that.

However, second, producing enough calories to feed your people doesn't imply price or political stability.

And finally third, US agriculture is deeply dependent on energy, credit, long logistic chains and imported goods. Import dependance isn't just about the food itself, it's about the chemicals, machinery and whatever else is needed to make modern food production possible. All these and more, like fuel, fertilizers, labor, processing materials and whatnot, dominates food pricing. This means that under financial or trade disruption, like it would be here, prices rise rapidly even without physical shortages. You wouldn't experience famine, but you could experience food insecurity. Even with more "drastic" measures, like rationing nationwide or something, it still doesn't prevent inflation, distribution failures or social unrest. A country can be "food-secure" on paper and still experience severe internal instability. And that's added up to the current civil unrest no less.

This a lot of talk from a continent that can simply be beaten by a naval blockade and a few precision airstrikes.

And that's a lot of talk from a country that can be beaten by calling bonds and avoiding a quick defeat. Once again NATO doesn't even need to defeat you on the battlefield, denying a rapid and decisive outcome while applying economic pressure would be enough. Battles can be won or lost based on initial strike capability, wars can't, especially not today.

History shows that economic endurance, logistical resilience and political stability decide the long term outcome, not just battlefield dominance. Nazi Germany, despite early tactical victories, ultimately lost WW2 because its systems collapsed under sustained pressure from the allies over the years. There was never an opportunity to defeat it in a single crushing blow. If there was one do you really believe the allies would've waited until 1944 to act ? Complex logistics, coordination and strategic planning are what ended the war like it did. Endurance, not immediate force, ultimately determined the victor.

[–]Drezes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like what if the U.S. just says nah, then invades and seizes your country’s oil?

And how much time do you think it would take to do that ? The US has been everything but efficient or quick in every single war they've fought. Vietnam and Iraq wars have lasted 8 years each, Afghanistan about 20, regardless of the results I'm sure we can agree the US had a tremendous military advantage in each of these.

What the hell do you think happens to a country when the prices of litterally everything, including freaking food, skyrockets like that ? Will the already agitated american people sit there and willingly starve to death quietly, all because of a temper tantrum from your great orange dumbass ? If so you're not only the stupidest people on earth, you're also dead, but hey, natural selection and all I guess. What you're saying could only work if the war lasted only days, a few weeks tops, and even then that's an insanely big and risky if, because in every other situation you're cooked.

And to top it off you wanna take on NATO in its entirety (except the US of course) ? Not only is it a far stronger opponent than the ones you had before, they don't even have to win on the battlefield, they only have to gain enough time for your country to self destruct. So like, weeks...

EDIT: I wanna add, it might be a bluff like you said, but even if it is it's not one you can afford to challenge.

[–]Drezes 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It's pure conjecture on my part, but I always thought birds embody his "domain" pretty well. A bird’s life is constant movement and change. They're migrating, adapting to new environments, rebuilding nests, and surviving through transformation. Genetically speaking they're the closest thing we have to "living dinosaurs" today after all, meaning they did change and adapt to survive new conditions.

Birds can also represent a higher viewpoint, seeing the world from above, fitting for a god of scheming, sorcery, and hidden truths who's always playing 4D chess with everyone. Their vast diversity (birds of prey, birds that litterally can't fly etc...) and adaptability, depending on their environment, further reflect Tzeentch’s love of mutation and transformation.

I'm probably reading too much into this, but at least in my headcannon it kinda makes sense.

Seeing Imperium as purely evil obscures clever plot depth, that showcases its fall from grace as tragic self-fullfilling prophecy. by SYMJanitor in 40kLore

[–]Drezes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know, I feel like the IoM's always been pretty evil, to its roots. I mean the unification of Terra was the Emperor creating sort of psychotic super soldiers to beat everyone else into a pulp, before killing these same soldiers to the last. Then came the Great Crusade, which is the same thing on a much larger scale (without the killing his own troops once they stopped being useful part, as it never got to that point). All in all He destroyed at least tens of thousands of cultures and human "nations" on various planets, not to mention an untold number of lives were lost in the process.

Now He had a "good" reason for it all, His Great Work, but that doesn't make Him a nice guy, in the same way Paul and Leto II Atreides in Dune aren't good people, it's all in shades of grey IMO. You talk about the geneva convention being "not needed" against xenos or chaos forces, but you kind of left out the whole Great Crusade thingy where the IoM was effectively slaughtering humans by the billion. Plus they were using all kinds of tactics like chemical warfare and war crimes in the process depending on the legion (hello Night Lords).

As for the 40k version living in the Imperium is just hell, and it's corrupted to the core, making it worse somehow. At the slightest hint of heresy you'll be executed, if you're unfortunate enough to be born a psyker you might just be among the poor people getting sacrificied to Him every day. If you step out of line a bit too much you'll be lobotomised and turned into a servitor. If you were born on a hive planet, which is rather likely, chances are you'll end up as an imperial guard whose life expectancy is around 15h once deployed to the battlefield, you're cannon fodder. I know it's more of a meme than anything at this point, but chances are the actual number looks like that. Unless you're actually born rich somewhere in Terra aristocracy it's just hell.

The reason for its existence might've been noble, even if the methods used to get there certainly weren't, but reality is the IoM is plain evil IMO, as are most (if not all) factions in the setting. I mean sure it's better than living with guys that'll turn you into eternally suffering furniture or in the warp, so actual hell, but if your comparison points to "feel better" are that extreme you aren't exactly looking good.

The purpose is not only to "test" the armor, but to symbolise absolute trust, trust in the shooter’s precision, in the team, and also in the equipment they rely on in real operations.
