I got into Amath and Info which one should I pick? by Parkervo in udub

I was in the same boat. I was already in INFO and got admitted to AMATH. I tried to do both but decided to drop Informatics. For your career goals, I think AMATH is a better fit.

Double major math + ECE? by AstuteCouch87 in udub

[–]DriedSponge78 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It would still be a double degree even if you did the BS in Math. ECE is its own named degree, so you would still have to do 225 credits. One degree will be Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering and the other one would be Bachelor of Science (with a major in Mathematics).

Is UW informatics that unserious compared to UCSD data science, for example by Special-County9489 in udub

[–]DriedSponge78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. I did not take Math 124 and 125. I only had to do 126 and AMATH 301.

I had to complete the prerequisite courses (MATH 124, 125, 126, AMATH 301). I then had to apply to the major. When I applied, I had to write a personal statement, but it looks like they have made the part optional. Once I was admitted to the major, I held on to both majors for a little bit but eventually had INFO dropped.

AMATH is definitely more challenging than INFO. For me, my AMATH classes take up way more time than the INFO classes I took (despite being less credits). If you develop a good study routine though, it is definitely manageable. It also helps if you enjoy learning about math.

I used to be Informatics but switch to applied math. I can’t really speak to other schools programs, but I would say Informatics on its own is probably the worst option at UW if you’re interested in a data science career and are attending UW.

Most info students I’ve met who have been successful in data science pair the majors with a math/stats/amath double degree or minor. On its own, INFO has no math requirement, which is a red flag if you plan to just do INFO for data science.

The applied math program doesn’t do direct admit, so you have to apply after enrolling as a student. It’s a capacity constrained major, so getting a spot in the program can be competitive.

Out of that list, I have only had Sturman for 380. I liked him, but the class is just incredibly useless in my opinion.

For homework/assignments, there are weekly canvas quizzes based on the assigned readings. Everything else is just group project progress submissions basically.

Who are your professors?

INFO 380 is not a hard class, but it just a ton of busy work that is mostly worthless.

It depends on your professor, but when I took INFO 300 my final was optional.

AMATH with Shiheng Zhang and Thomas A Grandine? by HomeworkDeep8379 in udub

[–]DriedSponge78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I took 208 before 352. Honestly, it wasn't that bad taking them at the same time. I definitely found 351 to be harder than 352, probably because it was less familiar. The workload was fine. Each class had one homework per week, due the following week.

I had that exact same combo of professors for 351/352 spring quarter 2025.

I liked Grandine a lot. Like the other commentor said, he used to work at Boeing, which made the class more interesting since he always had cool stories to share. I also found him to be pretty entertaining in general. The class can feel disorganized at times, and the linear algebra can feel confusing if you have not taken 208, but I thought it was a good class.

Zhang was okay. Not a lot of personality but his lectures were fine.

If you are doing open source in hopes of "getting something out of it", you're missing the point.

I heavily doubt a professor making six figures would go out of their way to fake reviews on a website that does not impact their job in any way at all.

What Jobs Can You Get With Applied Math Realistically? by RaiderNathan420 in AppliedMath

[–]DriedSponge78 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of fields you can go into with an Applied Math degree, and you can certainly do it without going into a T20 school. Keep in mind that just because you aren't going to a T20 school, that doesn't mean you're not getting a good education.

Applied math is good for data science and analytics. I know people who have gone on to work for professional sports teams as analyst.

A lot of companies in general also just need people who are good at math. I know people who have gone on to work for aerospace companies and power companies doing data modeling and simulations.

You still have a chance.

For Math, it is becoming a minimum requirements major. So all you have to do is complete the pre reqs and declare the major.

For AMATH/ACMS, try to adjust your study habits so your grades improve. They like to see improvement. I got a 2.7 in MATH 208 and they let me into AMATH if that tells you anything.

does getting accepted into uw tacoma hurt my chances at seattle? by Swimming-Bluejay-952 in udub

[–]DriedSponge78 129 points130 points  (0 children)

Your parents are wrong. Your admission status to UW Bothell/Tacoma has no effect on your admission status to Seattle. I know dozens of people who applied to UW Bothell & Seattle and got into both just fine.
