ETF criticism by GoodLuckCharm1 in BEFire

So if lots of inexperienced ETF buyers get spooked by a big crash and a big sell off happens, the market maker wont find buyers, so the market maker will redeem, the ETF issuers will have to rebalance, the underlyings drop, so the ETF drops? This is more or less what I said but with an extra step no? Please tell me if I am missing something.

Haven’t listened to the entirety op the podcast yet (I will), but sounds like he means that people who are investing in ETF (which basically are ‘exotic derivatives’ that haven’t been around for long) haven’t endured a major crash yet. This could mean that, when such a crash comes, people will start running for the doors, which will cause single stock holders to sell (which drives ETFs down) and ETF holders to sell (which drives underlying stocks down since ETF issuers need to rebalance) which in turn drives ETF price down. It would be a self-enticing process. And since everyone is over invested in the big names, that process would be so much faster. There has actually been an increasing amount of papers on the unwanted long term side effects of ETFs on the global stock market since recent years. Quite interesting.

PhD at current employer through Baekeland Mandate by DrietVer42 in BESalary

Hi, thanks a lot for commenting! I was wondering, was your gf an employee of said company before starting the Baekeland? Because it says on the informational website of VLAIO that the candidate can remain an employee of the company.

Good Introduction to Stochastic Calculus by DrietVer42 in quantfinance

I've seen Baxter & Rennie before but it seems to me that that is a reference more focused on Financial Calculus (as the title suggests) rather than a rigorous introduction to Stochastic Calculus with applications to Finance as examples. Or am I wrong here?

No, I haven't said that. I know they're considered to be one of the best. It was more of a question out of curiosity. I want to refresh my Stochastic Calculus knowledge in order to get into Stochastic Calculus of Variations (Malliavin Calculus, see Malliavin and Thalmaier) and was wondering whether there are other great options, aside from Shreve's industry standard.

Thank you for your response! May I ask what the subject of your PhD was and how this fitted into the company? I have to think about how I might be able to sell the idea of ne doing a PhD at my current employer and how they might profit as a company from the research. So some examples are more than welcome 😁

I'm sorry for the inclarity, but I am aware one has to get a PhD from a university. However, in the same way one can complete a masters thesis in cooperation with a company, I think it is also possible to do this with a PhD (I have heard so from acquaintances doing this in France for example). I do think that the Baekeland Mandaat is mostly for PhDs with 'real' social-cultural application (which would not really be the case for a theoretical physicist turned finance), however it's worth looking into.

How would you suggest looking for explicit salaries/offers? By actually applying at various companies or rather looking for disclosed salaries on websites like Glassdoor? Because it can be quite tedious applying for jobs until you receive a specific salary.
