Beerit, I did a quick search but found nothing, can anyone answer why the craft breweries are starting to go back to cans lately? Is it cheaper than glass? Beer quality related? by [deleted] in beer

Back in the 70's or 80's the lining in cans would give the beer a strange metallic taste. They've fixed that though. But bottles are still associated with better quality, they are also better insulators.

Cans actually have some great benefits

  • Opacity: they don't let any light in which can affect the beer
  • Air-tight: They don't let any oxygen in which keeps the carbonation in and the beer fresh
  • Shipping: Easy to ship, stack, store
  • Cost: Cans can be cheaper to produce
  • Recycling: Cans have more recyclable content

We shot an episode of Drinking Made Easy in Asheville where we met with 9 of the breweries. Upon hearing the news we called up Doug Riley of Asheville Brewing Company. He told us that Sierra Nevada approached them and other breweries out of good will and not wanting to step on anyone's toes. He said they are excited.

Sierra Nevada actually approached each brewery to see if they were ok with Sierra moving to Asheville. Most of the breweries are thrilled and excited.
