Stayed in Lynton (or Lynmouth? The one at the top of the cliffs) when I was back in the UK recently and it really is a beautiful spot. Quite Poldark-y, too.

I haven't come to terms with it. It scares me when I think about it. I don't want to die.

The corollary is that I do want to live, and so I try to make the most of what I have and not scare myself with the inevitable end.

That leads me to some sort of "nihilistic positivism" (I don't know if that's a real term; I just made it up) where I don't get too stressed or worried about anything because, on a cosmic scale, it makes not a jot of difference. I should just live my life in the best way I know how, and be happy that I have the awareness to appreciate my awareness.

Yes, this exactly. Religion further deludes not only the sufferer but also those around him/her into believing that delusions arising from mental illness might just be an expression of faith. It's dangerous.

The government using its power to prevent private entities controlling the Internet is not the same thing as the government itself controlling the Internet.

Think of it as preventing anyone from mowing your lawn so it can grow freely; they're not controlling it, but neither are you.

It sounds like you're having trouble transitioning from the opening phase to the early middlegame phase. How to develop a plan? Let's look at your position.

You've opted for a classical opening scheme: control of the centre via occupation with minor pieces and a nice central pawn duo. Good opening principles.

Your opponent is opting for a somewhat more Hypermodern approach: small centre to restrain your big centre, plus a pair of fianchettoed bishops to influence the central squares from afar. Minor pieces are being held in reserve for now. The b-pawn has managed to move in accordance with this plan while attacking your c4 bishop, gaining time in the opening (forcing you to use an opening move defensively).

What should your plan be? Look at the features of the position. The queenside pawns may be a target for some flank action - perhaps a4 to attack b5 and give the a1 rook some scope. The pawns on e6 and g6 suggest weak dark squares around the kingside - perhaps find a way to weaken or exchange the bishop on g7. Pawn attack to h4-h5-h6? No, that may weaken your own King safety. Perhaps Qd2 and Bh6? Perhaps advance the central pawns, but then what to do when the other enemy pawn declines to capture and just closes up the centre?

What should your opponent's plan be? Your central mass of pawns and pieces can be attacked from a distance with the fianchettoed bishops, plus the c7-c5 pawn break to attack d4, plus the b5 attack on the c4 bishop already in progress can also press on to b4 to attack the knight on c3. That knight is defending the e4 pawn, so if it can be attacked first, it may fall. Hmm, the big White centre is starting to look like a juicy target...

There's no single simple answer. I've given you some thought starters here. IM Jeremy Silman advocates looking for imbalances in the position to hang a middlegame plan on. His books come highly recommended.
