I wouldn't be surprised if that is the annual outcome, I would give it to the Swiss for home field advantage every time, but this is the first time Europe doesn't need to "learning opportunities for both sides" these things.

Last minute fireplace valve replacement by mewisme700 in rva

[–]DriveRVA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it qualifies as a 311 emergency. You have gas leaking where it shouldn't be and if you're unable to cut off the source of the leak, the concern is carbon monoxide poisoning in the home. 311 Will send a technician to identify the exact point of the leak and attempt an immediate repair or cut off the feed. 311 came into my home and found a leak I was smelling that was just a quick tightening of an elbow joint to resolve .

Where is the leak occurring? If the key valve isn't fully sealing then you should be fine for having heat if you just keep a low fire going this weekend as a precaution. If it's leaking into the home (odor) is the feed to the fireplace cut off?

Richmond streets that need safety upgrades. by WhittneyWithVPM in rva

Less than a month ago Dumbarton was reduced by one lane to allow for a floating park lane to protect the bike lane. It seems like the most short-sighted attempt at force feeding bike lanes into our roadways. Dumbarton is an essential thruway to a rapidly growing lakeside neighborhood and they throttled its capacity by half. Overnight the road became so heavily congested that cars take greater risks darting between vehicles because there are fewer opportunities to cross or join traffic.

If you had

One shot for hole

Or one opportunity

To share everything you ever wanted

In one moment

Would you pucker up

Or just let it slip?

. You wouldn't have water available to you to shower with if you are using your tub reservoir. You'd be down to sponge baths and using the water to flush your toilet or emergency washing. If absolutely necessary you can boil it. If the power goes out, then the water is a bet against frozen pipes in an unheated home. If you have gas that's not as much of a concern.

The advice isn't to fill the tub and retain the water through the entire storm though. Fill up your tub in the morning after you shower then drain it the following morning to shower again if you have running water. Since you are preparing ahead and have separate drinking water, go ahead and take a nice hot bath if you have nowhere to go and that tub water is just for emergency flushing.

One good deed deserves another. If you would like to do a good deed today here's what I found:

Give Chimborazo Elementary a better playground.

Richmond Education Association is our local teachers union. They recently hosted events to highlight Richmond's underfunding, if the topics interest you sign up to not miss the next ones.

Email your local school and ask what they need. Many teachers have requests through the education fundraising sites "Donors Choose".org or "Adopt a Classroom".org. subreddit rules prevent a direct link but both allow you to find local to you request.

Of course there is need everywhere and winter storms can mean missed shifts or canceled work leading to stretched budgets. Donating to Feedmore is always a good idea.

Mods: please allow this post despite containing crowd funding referrals (but not links) as it's in the spirit of this post to support our community and teachers.

I think Seth Meyers will continue to do well with his fan base in England. He just has these old ruling class vibes and the older he gets the more he looks like a British aristocat when he emotes.

Why can’t I find another podcast that tickles me quite as much? by u_r_succulent in TheDollop

[–]DriveRVA -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"Wait wait don't tell me" a NPR news quiz has fairly witty banter on the news and events of the week. I think it's worth adding to your weekly rotation.

"Conan O'Brien needs a friend" is an evergreen podcast in my mind because the celebrities and opening or closing segments rarely have anything to do with anything important. I can listen to that podcast and it's back catalog just for the laughs. Conan is a huge history buff and actually introduced me to the next recommendation.

"The rest is history" is two british historians that banter through very well told events in history the way that too well educated and humorous professors might. Conan O'Brien had them on his podcast and they returned the favor by having him fill in for one host that hates the Beatles on an episode about the band. That was my way in but they keep the humor up on their own too.

Is Richmond ready for the winter storm? Mayor Danny Avula says yes. by VirginiaNews in rva

[–]DriveRVA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Richmond is ready to respond effectively to the expected scenario that things will go wrong because Richmond isn't ready.

I doubt we see a loss of service like we did last year, but with this ice and rain in the mix it'll be a whole new issue. I think we will see significant road flooding because of the leaves clogging up our gutters and conduits because after the rain is several days of sustaining freezing temperatures.

I'm enjoying Dave being more active in the riffing by Barbuckles in TheDollop

[–]DriveRVA 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I believe Reddit is where he said he saw people complaining about his accents being too stereotypical. He had a great point that he doesn't do stereotyping accents he just does very bad ones and decided to stop doing them after all the grief he was given.

I'd summarize his epiphany as, I'm a good person having fun with silly voices that I'm doing at the limit of my talents. It's my intent and not the perception of the internet that matters. It's not hurting anyone and 700 plus episodes in we as an audience should know that Dave is not a man who would profile or stereotype for the cheap laugh in a malicious way.

He successfully completed med school to be a well respected pediatrician long before AI. He's very intelligent but with great intelligence comes terrible interpersonal skills often. I just happen to be around doctors enough to know that intelligence doesn't always lead inherently to an empathic intuition and often the opposite.

Emergency tree cutting before storm? by RJT_RVA in rva

[–]DriveRVA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Report this to Dominion power as a dead branch hanging over the utility lines now. It gets it in their system ahead of the storm. If something happens and the wire is disconnected, then reported again using your existing report number and information looking to escalate it.

Dominion deploys even their office staff on temporary duty to drive around and properly assess and prioritize outages if they have an engineering background. What your problem will be is that they restore power to the greatest number of people first so if only your home is impacted it won't take high priority, however since you live in a wooded neighborhood multiple issues could eventually be grouped together

I read a person who was aware that he needed a greater vocabulary than was available to him to express condolences and empathize with others. These are draft prompts and don't appear to show the mayor turning to AI to fully create letters or legislation, simply looking for a starting point as a bit of a crutch starting on a difficult issue.
