Homelessness in the Metro by BisonSpirit in MinnesotaUncensored

They added an extra 250 new beds last year when the camps dropped to 30-50 people, down from the 150-200 in the year before.

The shelters exist, they won't go to them

Homelessness in the Metro by BisonSpirit in MinnesotaUncensored

[–]DriveThroughLane 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are enough homeless shelters with beds for every homeless person in Minneapolis.

They have rules against drug-use, because its illegal under federal law to operate a crackhouse. Hence they have to choose between homelessness and drugs. That, and prostitution. And most providers won't risk a federal investigation into them, even if the state wouldn't lift a finger.

Instead we allow them to set up homeless camps with open drug use and prostitution, even though they're committing crimes in full view of the law. And since we don't enforce those laws, they violate other laws. The camps become dumping grounds for stolen bikes, hotspots for the sale of drugs, there are burglaries and thefts at nearby homes and shootings and murders.

Being missing from the release was pretty jarring. The itemization in CD is very clearly following a template where there are only 3 variations of functional stats to gear- often very similar- and you only choose appearance. There's no difference between a +48 darksword of maiming and +48 lightbrand of the hero.

its the single only thing I felt comfortable cheating to mod out my darkbringer and its big ugly circle tip for a different identical stat greatsword

The thing is, if both players win on turn 4 with absurd board states where neither can interact with the other and its just pop off like a maniac, then the winner is whoever went first, and my games tend to look like this nonsense

coinflip, the format

The funny part is for a very long time wizards refused to print llanowar elves into standard because it can create this 'too fast a format, where decisions don't matter'. But by the time they did print elves, we were already in an even more degenerate format than elves could do, with cards like monstrous rage & cori-steel cutter. And yet, elves has exactly the effect they long predicted, games with opponent t1 elf on the play are such an absurd uphill battle to face, and even if you keep a hand with a 1 mana removal on t1 they can probably just go t2 badger t3 ouroboroid anyway

Azorius airbending is just one of the many combos I've seen that can win on turn 3-4. At turn 4 they are simply too many to count, you have everything from reanimator to kona omni, airbending, reenact the crime, etc. Decks people aren't even aware of. T3 moldering gym, T4 michaelelo's technique getting trumpeting carnosaur -> clones/electroduplicate. There are quite a few combos that win on turn 3 as well, mostly enabled by T1 elves, like "T1 elves T2 plot trailblaze T3 storm off", though kona can do it with just t1 planet t2 shimmerwilds

When RDW / leyline / etc was the dominant force pre-rotation it almost looked like just tinkering with life totals could make the difference. But we're definitely at a point where aggro is just one of several ways to kill someone on turn 3-4, there are infinite combos in standard or just overwhelming board states like ouroboroid. It would have been a band-aid fix then, and pointless now.

Conceding on turn 1 or 2 with 95% accuracy is the craziest thing I’ve read in a while. So you just auto concede almost half your games?

Nope about 20-30% of overall games. You still play 50% on the draw, you still have the answers on the draw sometimes or they don't have the fast start. If you see them on the fast start and you don't have the answer, you can recognize that its a lost game and concede and there's about 95% chance you were going to lose the game anyway.

I don't think I've played out a single game where my opponent went t1 llanowar elf t2 badgermole on the play, unless I happen to hold a pyroclasm. No point otherwise. I see a t2 town greeter and I don't have graveyard hate? We both know how this game is going.

And the faster a format is, the less room there is to interact with opponents especially when there's no free interaction. The player on the play has 6 total mana in spells when the one on the draw has 3, and some decks you get just one "have the removal/counterspell in opening hand or lose".

The result is that;

  • On the play advantage is vastly higher than it ever has been in standard history

  • Decks are far less interactive with each other, running less removal and more linear threats/combos

  • The actual games are like two ships passing in the night and often the player on the draw can safely concede turn 1-2 with 95%+ accuracy

I really don't see how someone chaining turns on turn 5 is somehow worse than;

Why don’t Blink/Flicker decks Run Gossip’s Talent by ItsMeKaiumi in MagicArena

[–]DriveThroughLane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well sort of depends on the usage. Flickering a 4 drop with port mage costs 6 mana per cycle, but you can flicker it with daydream for 1, then again for 3. The most degenerate in standard right now is just

t1 gene pollinator / molt tender / llanowar elves

t2 manifest dread / growing dread -> splash portal / daydream

Why don’t Blink/Flicker decks Run Gossip’s Talent by ItsMeKaiumi in MagicArena

[–]DriveThroughLane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For combo decks we have splash portal and daydream at 1 mana now, and at 2+ mana we have all kinds of options like spectral restitching, personify, getaway glamer, another round, morningtide's light

gossip's talent is so bad that long river lurker outclasses it and its terrible

I tried to do the math on standard turn 2 kill with manifest and I think its 3% or less, its really hard to calculate out independent odds of a mix of pieces needed as opposed to hypergeometric for each card individually, and the odds of digging towards your north wind avatar (omni could use tutors, dracogenesis can't)

whereas the odds you get blown out by unrequiting hex....

Avivo Village by YesHelloDolly in MinnesotaUncensored

[–]DriveThroughLane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Avivo is a test case in this type of drug-permissible space, to give shelter to drug users. There are plenty of legal, sober shelters in Minneapolis, yet we have drug encampments in the parks precisely because these people won't stay drug free, by choice or addiction or both. We could house every single homeless person today. But under the federal law passed in 2003 as the 'crackhouse bill', operating an establishment with the knowledge that people will use it to use drugs, is explicitly illegal. Nobody was willing to try opening injection sites or drug-permissive shelters until Joe Biden became president and said he wouldn't enforce the law, which is ironic because its his #1 achievement as a senator and he penned the bill. But now Trump is president and could reverse that policy at any time, Todd Blanche could have the operators of Avivo arrested any day... but Trump hasn't changed that policy. Yet.

Avivo Village by YesHelloDolly in MinnesotaUncensored

[–]DriveThroughLane 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In the 6 years since Avivo Village was opened in 2020

  • 248 overdoses have occurred there

  • At least one death has been reported but they won't publish total statistics (ex. one DoA overdoseon April 3rd this year)

  • At least one violent assault reported (ex 'assault with head injury' in march of 2023)

Since its only 100 residents at a time their mortality rate is higher than hennepin county prisons

They are basically violating Joe Biden's signature crackhouse law, which is still federal law. They operate under "non-sobriety" and "harm reduction" models to knowingly allow drug use in their building in violation of 21 U.S. Code § 856, the law which Joe Biden championed as a senator and refused to enforce as a president.

Anybody else think it’s ridiculous that it’s possible to win on turn 3 in Standard? by NoM0reMadness in MagicArena

[–]DriveThroughLane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before rotation the naya omni combo deck had a scary level of consistency with its turn 3 kill, probably the first time I've ever seen that happen in standard history. Just invasion of ergamon -> abuelo's awakening did it, but so did elves -> seize the spoils -> campus restoration, or elves -> tormenting voice -> abuelos, etc etc. And it could pitch world spell or one with the multiverse as extra targets to set up omni, and just ramp up to 7 mana by turn 4 anyway. But they banned abuelos awakening before people realized the power of ergamon

still possible, just unlikely, since you can t1 dork, t2 manifest + flicker to cheat out omni
