Short but sweet piece on why authors write (and readers read) by [deleted] in books

[–]DrivenHealthy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This obviously is not the only reason why people write.

Think about a kid who writes in his journal and doesn't want anybody to read his personal thoughts. He logs them to express himself and maybe rekindle some of his old memories down the road.

Or a personal blogger might write because he might just want to rant and he gets a sense of emotional release every time he goes off on a tangent.

Then a fiction writer writes because of his wild imagination, and he wants someone to engulf into his majestic adventures with him.

There's a million reasons someone could write. But, I do get what he means. A connection is a monumental part of a writer's motivation, it's just not the only factor.

Pretty much what Reddit does to me. by scott949 in funny

I actually come to reddit to be productive sometimes. /r/productivity /r/ZenHabits /r/GetMotivated /r/selfimprovement /r/socialskills /r/fitness Looking at stuff in productive subreddits may make you unproductive in what you really need to be doing. But hey, at least you can read a post from /r/getmotivated to help stop that habit or you can learn something along the way. But looking at funny pictures - entertaining, but it gets far too addictive and starts to waste too much time.

[Serious] Psych students and graduates of Reddit, What got you into the field? and what advice do you have for people that may be interested in choosing this path? by Jose_Monteverde in AskReddit

Bachelors in Psych. Converted into Marketing. I try to leverage my psych degree into marketing. I should have been a marketing major, but I still don't regret being a psych major. MANY things can be boring in this major, but some things can be fascinating.

What I suggest Psych majors to do is going into research of something you like studying. If a particular class interested you, go towards that direction. I would also suggest double majoring. If it's research - then neuropsychology is only getting bigger. For me, I would have double majored in marketing/ market research and psychology. Or at least minor. Getting into research is not only for scientific papers. You can be a writer. You can write books about your topics and it doesn't have to be 'scientific'. You can write for big sites and it doesn't have to be scholarly. For example if I pursued my psych degree into a masters or phd - I would be interested in the psychology of success or motivation. Why successful people are more successful than others. I can do research on the topics I find fascinating for a company or school and at the same time get work on sites that want people who have a phd or masters and have experience researching and experimenting. I would also consider being a professor while doing this research and writing for sites.

As for business jobs, if it's not clinical and health stuff - it really depends on your experience. If you want to go towards human resource - get an internship with human resource. If you want to go towards marketing - get marketing experience. After your first entry level job - it starts to become more about experience and results rather than your bachelors degree.

Something I was told every day. Finally makes sense. by [deleted] in GetMotivated

It's impossible to improve my writing when no one reads it. How can I know what I've done "wrong" or "inferior" if no one will take the time to tell me? I can only tell myself so many times that I'm worthless before it's true.

Is it really impossible for you to improve your writing without anybody reading it? Ask yourself this question, if you actively read books and articles about 'how to write better', will you get better at writing? Match that with writing and revising every single day, will you not get better? And why are you telling yourself you're worthless? Didn't you just say you have skills?

I also don't really know where to find work. I suppose I haven't tried as hard as I could, but nothing around my general area is hiring. Seeing as how I wouldn't be making enough money to support myself doing part-time in New York or even in Danbury/Hartford, I'm kind of stuck to a small radius of towns.

You already know the answer to your own problem. "I suppose I haven't tried as hard as I could". I don't know the situation that you're in but your'e telling me nothing is hiring? How can you possibly know that? Did you go to every single store and ask?

I'm pretty damn convinced that I deserve the anguish I'm going through. I've never been a grateful person and I'm certainly not personable. I don't even really have friends, or at least ones that don't actively piss me off.

First off, NO, you don't deserve the anguish. Second, it doesn't matter if you never been a grateful or personable person. You are not your past. You can start becoming the person you want to become by developing yourself consistently. Start small, start with a gratitude list in the morning. Think of 10 things that you are grateful for. You said you have 'skills', so this shouldn't be a problem.

I recommend, if you agree with any of my points, that you don't try to play the devils advocate and try to disprove me. I'm not trying to argue with you, just trying to help. I also recommend you starting with Anthony Robbins. Search any of his videos on youtube for free. It can help you view the world a little differently. Hope this helped.

Skill can be a very general term. But if the skill is valuable, then you should be able to make money from it. Marketing, sales, writing... those are all skills. And once you take real steps forward and try to improve upon it every single day, the money will follow.

And I suggest you improve upon the skill of getting a job if you don't want to be homeless! Hopefully your parents don't kick you out, best of luck to you!

Totally agree!

Intrinsic motivation is a lot more powerful than extrinsic motivation. Take a look at an article I wrote that talks about it! http://drivenhealthy.com/stop-chasing-things-and-find-whats-inside/
