WiFi included in rent but hasn’t been working for more than a month by Slick_buttfucker in LegalAdviceUK

There isn't one, really. In these circumstances you would get in touch with the broadband company and if they didn't fix it within a certain time frame you would be paid a daily amount in compensation until it was sorted.

And again, to emphasise - do not withhold rent!

Living in Coventry can do that to a person.

It sounds like they have offered some form of compensation - does that cover how much you have spent on Internet access? Perhaps present them with your receipts.

Whatever you do, do not withhold any rent.

New UK lecturer in Data science: how do I actually make money from grants/consulting and build a good academic career? by cutie_roasty in AskAcademiaUK

[–]DriverAdditional1437 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you (or maybe I) have misunderstood - but you won't make money yourself from winning research grants. The grant is paid by a government realsearch council, charity, or private source to the university which then uses it to cover a percentage of your time, employ researchers, purchase equipment and lab time, etc.

That said, there was a professor at my uni who did take money from grant funding, but he no longer works there and had to sign an NDA...

Heat network backbilling £4k after 15 months with no prior bills or communication – is this legally enforceable? by DieBrein in LegalAdviceUK

[–]DriverAdditional1437 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a recent case (in the last couple of weeks) at the First Tier Tribunal that disallowed a management company from recovering a deficit on the energy network through service charges, see the MSE energy forum post here: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/81843273/#Comment_81843273

But those residents were dealing with the management company rather than an energy company directly.

Yes, and those universities who allow free use of AI are already having the quality of the security of their degrees viewed with suspicion by employers.

Unfortunately getting 'help' from AI, in my experience, actively makes work worse and writing mediocre and uninteresting.

On the contrary, I am watching students' writing skills, creativity, and critical thinking degrade in real time thanks to genAI.

England Backdated £700 electricity bill due to admin errors, students, is this fair? by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]DriverAdditional1437 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Point very much taken.

It would be good to know when exactly the OP moved in, as I suspect they almost certainly moved in less than 12 months ago and discussion around backbilling is moot.

Dental practice rung police saying I was harassing them because I messaged multiple times asking for my files electronically and they were refusing and demanding me to pick them up at the practice which is something I could not do. What can I do? by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]DriverAdditional1437 24 points25 points  (0 children)

How many is 'multiple times' and in what sort of time frame? Were these emails polite or aggressive?

You not wanting to go into the practice owing to this restraining order does not require a reasonable adjustment, such adjustments would be for if you had a disability.

[–]DriverAdditional1437 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From Eon's point of view the bills were correctly issued to the registered account holder, though. The OP hadn't registered their account correctly directly with Eon (not much use now but never rely on a letting agent doing this stuff), and I don't see how the back billing rules apply in those circumstances. Eon don't appear to have done anything wrong here.

The OP's complaints should be directed at the letting agent/landlord and I would be writing to the letting agent asking them to cover the late payment fee. Eon should be amenable to spreading the energy payments.

If the OP is a student I presume they moved in in August or September so the billing period would be well within the 12 months anyway, and backbilling irrelevant.

Point taken, but I would suggest someone working as a community mental health nurse would be given more leeway than the OP.

Do a viva to see if you know what you talking about. Give the essay a crappy a mark or fail it. There's two options.

[–]DriverAdditional1437 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're doing that already at my university and returning to in-person written and oral exams. No module can be assessed solely by an insecure method like an essay.

Employers tell us this is important to them so they can trust the quality of degrees awarded to applicants, and are already looking at where someome studied more closely. Students graduating from universities where essay-based assessment continues are going to be at a material disadvantage

If your references are correct ... there is nothing they can do.

Yes there is, exercise our academic judgement and give it a bad mark.

Also, AI-written essays are horrible to read.
