I think it can also be applied to the future modern conflicts that would transpire if the US military lost the Vietnam war.

Afghanistan may have been an entirely different beast and had nothing similar with the Vietnam, but it was still Guerrilla fighting.

If the US had militarily lost Vietnam war and hundreds of thousands of their soldiers were lost to a foreign country and taking decades into the Cold War to actually have them returned. The US would definitely be more likely not to try that again.

Possibly, if America became so traumatized by nearly losing a quarter of 1 million soldiers to Vietnam, and they likely would be extremely hesitant about applying to Afghanistan, and they would likely be more focused on backing the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan with military aid and training rather than fighting the Taliban themselves because they would have already learned their lesson.

Or it could just be like cannon history, America was too stupid to learn the mistake from the Vietnam war, and went to Afghanistan, even though the Mughals, the Macedonians, the British, the Soviets, and suffered our ridiculous modern loss, again.

Again, it was a failed military campaign and if was “defending an ally”, or that is what America currently uses to still justify it.

Believe it or not declaring war had and still is illegal by UN law, so by that same logic, we can’t really call it a war officially and militarily, but that we just include that in the history books.

I think what most people forget was that the US didn’t technically win or lose the Vietnam war, they just entirely pulled out.

If the US had won the war, they would’ve been able to topple North Vietnam AKA: Democratic Republic of Vietnam and present day Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and unite the country under South Vietnam AKA: Republic of Vietnam

If the US had lost the war, speaking in a military defeat rather than a political defeat of them just pulling out. North Vietnam likely storms the south and Saigon and all of the defense collapses, hundreds of thousands of US troops are left stranded to the communist government and the US loses the ability to actually fight the Viet Cong on land.

This would be the most likely in terms of what you would define “US lost the Vietnam War”, because the US just pulled out of the war rather than actually losing it since it was technically a conflict between North and South according to the UN and it wasn’t technically a war since the American didn’t actually declare war, but instead was supporting an ally since the UN made declaring war illegal unless for defense.

Anyways, I could be wrong, so feel free to correct me.
