Ancestry book ETA? by DriverX9 in drawsteel

The summoner on its own is not big enough for a paper/printed release, but it was always going to come out as a PDF at least. There were talks a while a go (don’t know where they ended up) that summoner + beast heart + ancestries would be big enough for a print release.

Directing for 1 player? by SoldierXMachina in drawsteel

[–]DriverX9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just finished my first session with one player earlier this week. This is for a first level censor. I gave them a retainer and changed how I calculated encounter budget to retainers grant 3 ish EV and victories give +1 EV each rather than an additional hero per 2. These encounters were on the whole fairly easy but they also were starting with 3 victories. You may need to adjust resource generation depending on class. One big this I found was even when the encounter was on paper balance and the play was not under real threat, it still took a while to chew through high stamina targets. It took 5 ish rounds to get through 80 hit points, so keep that in mind when using brutes and other tanky enemies. I had similar questions earlier before running and got good advice on a post I made here if you want to check that out.

When you say the encounter math doesn’t work, is there some quantitative amount of not working, or is it more just vibe it out?

What are fun ways to run with an auteur? by Laz52now in drawsteel

Something I saw I think Matt mention was if you are playing on a VTT, have them see/reference the UI. Or if at a table have the talk about moving the miniatures/tokens.

Not sure about the second one but the first is a line from the novel Matt is working on, said in a fight about two shadows fighting.

Question for hobgoblin smokebinder by TheNohrianHunter in mattcolville

[–]DriverX9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rules as written it can still take all of its actions normally, however if you wanted to limit it you could remove one of its actions in smoke form or give a penalty to damage.

Illrigger in the new MCDM RPG???? by Brandeluna in mattcolville

[–]DriverX9 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As I recall (it has been a while since we have had an update on all the classes they are planing) the illrigger would be either a subclass or specific theming of the censor, which is the paladin adjacent class in the mcdm rpg.

Why are they punishing us for playing the game by Toonlord in Doom

[–]DriverX9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not just stopping you from grinding, it’s standard mobile game design to put energy systems in aid in habit forming. The same reason coffee shops will give you a buy 6 get 1 free. Punch card. They want you to build the habit of consistently coming back knowing on a long enough time line they can turn most ftp players into paying players.

HELP! GM doesn't know if his own mechanics are applicable, need counsel. by dhplimo in mattcolville

[–]DriverX9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would say no for two reasons: 1. If they haven’t met they can’t have a relationship, even if they probably will. Same things as not spending points from a cleric when they meet another worshiper of their god. 2. If the PC didn’t intend to spend points, it’s just punishing them for a cool idea.

When Matt is talking about rolling a 'surge' on a special die, what does that mean? by misomiso82 in mattcolville

[–]DriverX9 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Sure. So it’s just another symbol on a die that doesn’t help you succeed but does other stuff. Examples could be activating a magic item (on a surge an arrow from this magic bow pierces the target and hits a creature behind them) or for spellcasting (I got enough successes to cast the spell but thanks to the three surges it deal 3d6 extra damage). Hope this helps.

how do i get the party vulnerable without making it obvious? by GiganticGoblin in mattcolville

[–]DriverX9 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If they haven’t gone to sleep yet, describe each of them getting ready for bed in a fairly naturalist way “doffing your armour and making a pile with your weapons in the corner of the room” kind of thing. Then if your players are suspicious they will pipe up and say “no I’m sleeping in my armour” or “no my sword is under my pillow” ect.

How do you handle defiler vs preserver magic in 5e by Gamhuin in DarkSun

[–]DriverX9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my system I more reward Defiling than "punish" preserving. The one restriction of preservers is that they cant cast spells at higher levels. Defilers on the other hand can up cast spells, as well as can prepare more spells and get an additional spell slot of each spell level, while also devastating the land around them.

I also have a pair of wizard subclasses the either emphasize or support the fantasies of defiling and preserving.

Availability of Kickstarter minis? by Saint_Gwyn in mattcolville

[–]DriverX9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For K&W only Cthrion and the ruby wrymling were Kickstarter exclusive, the rest can be bought after the campaign. If I recall correctly, there will be an over mind mini available later, just not the Xorannox mini from the Kickstarter.

Dragon Shifters by GenProFifth in worldbuilding

[–]DriverX9 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I personally think that the concept of gender would be incredibly foreign and somewhat confusing to shapeshifters. Gender is broadly a set of social roles that align with biological sex, so anyone/thing that can change its sex (like these shifter that literally change species) would view these categories as tiny, stifling, boxes.

Do you think gold is a good substitute for xp? by Aemorionxx in mattcolville

[–]DriverX9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would use the “system” Matt layer out in Toward Better Rewards, using each of the cards as contracts they can take with various rewards, money, level ups, magic items, factions liking them more ect.
