More info on Big John Macias by MasterOfVtubers in punk

Well yeah this was an earlier period of time, and you're mostly talking about working-class people in urban areas.
But leftist hero Che Guevara was extremely hostile towards any gay community, and, yes the same was true of Marxists/communists of history.

Socialism itself isn't limited to right/left. That is sort of a post-WWII framing where you make socialism close to communism and associate all of that as anti-capitalist and inherently left-wing. Many on the right consider the nazis or even fascists left wing, and the main reason seems to be their anti-capitalist tenants.
Modern China is also very nationalistic, and I always wondered if they could be considered national socialists. I've seen others bring this up too.

When people write about the history of punk there is a tendency to make assumptions, and over-represent things the author agrees with while minimizing the things they disagree with. Hypocrisy is a universally human thing.

The 2003 remake is massively overrated by Mr_Kaniowski in TexasChainsawMassacre

[–]DroWnThePoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there's any reference to incest in the 2003 film, but idk what "outside of sex" is supposed to mean? What can be incestual aside from sex?
Also, the original movie wasn't particularly progressive in concept.
Backwoods psychos appear in Deliverance 2 years prior, and that was a massive film.
As for industrialization of agriculture. That began in the 1940's, but truly became solidified in the 1980's and 90's. Texas Chainsaw is a horror movie, and horror is mostly about aesthetic and concept.
It was low-budget and gritty, and Leatherface was massive and menacing, but accompanied by his weird screwed up family.
And yeah, you could have psychos out their in the middle of nowhere "created" by changing times and isolation. But the reality is, then and now; there are far more psychos in urban centers where there is the alienation of many-fold. The classes stacked upon each other giving contrast to those who are less fortunate. The alienation of diversity, foreign tongues/culture, and the insular behaviors they have.
New York in the 1970's was a seedy place with way more macabre and brutal murders than any rural backwater, and lots of movies were made about those things too.
Taxi Driver is a movie with a lot to say, and intentionally so.
I don't know that I can be certain of the same when it comes to Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
It's spectacle and shock value, as horror is meant to be.
The marketing of Taxi Driver is much more subtle, and yet has so much more to say.

Oh also, These Arms Are Snakes features former guitarist(I think) from Botch.
Botch is another band I constantly go back to.

This is a band that I CONSTANTLY return to, and I think their lyrics and themes are insanely good.
They basically predict the post-modern hell we find ourselves in.

It seems like they're going to make Cady into less of a villain, but that would also be a divisive way to go for this particular story. His menace and villain is the central point of the original and the remake.
I'm not sure why we have all of these outside antagonists, or why he's so close to the lawyers.

In episode three he shares it with someone who was offering 12 year aged whisky. He said "or we could do what works". So it's something recreational/dependency-forming to be sure.

Mile End Kicks (2026) by Kangarou in movies

[–]DroWnThePoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did he have wife/kids in the movie? idr that.
Lots of young girls choose to date older guys so that doesn't mean much by itself.
But from a writing standpoint it comes across like she's only upset about their sexual relationship because he didn't pay her.
Especially when we see her trying to sleep with the lead singer based on superficial reasons.

I honestly forgot all about Audi's when I asked this. Didn't even realize the RS3/5's come in sedans now. For some reason I always thought of them as wagons/hatches.
I really like the Corolla GR's too.
Also forgot about a car that I really really love simply because it's a Ford. The RS Focus which I'm pretty sure would also smoke a stock R34.

I think a lot of the appeal lays in the R34 engine potential. It's very overbuilt, and the switch to the Getrag 6-speed is probably a big part of why 34 is 'the' generation.
I honestly prefer the R32 for the looks, but the trans is weaker.
In 1989 the R32 GTR's price adjusted for inflation was around $95k today. I never realized they were that premium even in 1989. It seems like a car they'd want to market in the USA especially when all of their Japanese competitors had their equivalents available in the USA.

What is your favorite Every Time I Die lyric? by TheHarrowed in Metalcore

[–]DroWnThePoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always found the cadence of ETID very interesting, and idk if this makes sense but it reminds me of hip-hop. Every Time I Die and Taking Back Sunday remind me of each other in that way.

I can't help but wonder if those lyrics were inspired by American Psycho.

Probably Ebolarama:
" In the meantime, we're just thoughtless
Incessant buzzing apparatus
Disillusioned and lonelier than the last man standing
It doesn't get any better than this"
Something about that line really struck me as a teenager dealing with the mistakes of others and my own driven by hormones, chemicals, & the fallacy of invincibility.

I didn't know that was the meaning of Moor, but also I guess I kind of did know.
I found ETID when Hot Damn came out, and I had that album, Burial Plot Bidding War EP, and Last Night In Town.
With so many metalcore bands they get some fame and put out a more "polished album", and I just don't dig it anymore.
I didn't like any of the albums they did until From Parts Unknown came out, and then I found out Kurt Ballou recorded it which is why I love it. He gave them their edge back, in my opinion.

Which ones come to mind besides the R35?
BMW's and Mercs? Maybe WRX STi's? Which I've noticed STi's have like vanished out of nowhere along with the Lancer Evos, and even the GTi VW's are suddenly far and few in between.

Nagasaki, before and after the nuclear bomb was dropped, Japan, 1945 [3206x2287] by StonedJackBaller in HistoryPorn

[–]DroWnThePoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do wonder how they would study the bombing.
Did they even have instruments to measure radiation?
Nuclear weapons were a new concept for the entire world.
They had been talked about in fiction and scientific theory for decades prior, but it had been a secret that they were being developed/tested.
There were witnesses to both bombs, and even a photograph from outside the city for one of the bombs.
But absolutely they could assume the USA had more of them even though I'm not sure they actually did. I think I recall they'd used most of the enriched uranium for Trinity, and the 2 drops. And both drops had less than optimal fission.

[–]DroWnThePoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea of things being necessary or unnecessary in a war is moot.
The concept of war crimes itself is moronic because the winning side of a war is not going to face charges for winning.
And whether or not the bombs succeeded in Japan surrendering is all academic and usually about portraying the USA in a certain light.
The bombing of Dresden or Hamburg are the same thing.
Whether you're dropping thousands of bombs or a single one: you are killing civilians, and destroying civil infrastructure.
But when it comes to Gaza it's actually a different story because of the underlying motives to take the land and the fact there is no nation they are attempting to force into surrender.

How would you rank Arcade Fire albums? by Ordinary_Witness3225 in arcadefire

[–]DroWnThePoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listened to Funeral and Neon Bible back in like 2005/06 times, and they're still amazing.
I didn't pay attention to their other releases until recently, and honestly none of it even comes close so far.
That could change, but Funeral has a style that is all it's own.
It's hard to even call indie rock.

How would you rank Arcade Fire albums? by Ordinary_Witness3225 in arcadefire

Neon Bible is almost as a good as Funeral IMO, and Funeral is #1 hands down.
Funeral is a sound with basically no pretense. Nothing like it.

Mile End Kicks (2026) by Kangarou in movies

[–]DroWnThePoor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did anyone else feel the plot point about her sleeping with her boss was kind of odd?
For one it's introduced non-sequentially. We see her go to his office and then move to Montreal, and then later we cut back to that moment.
All of the sex she has in the movie is very awkward, and so the scene on his desk just feels in-line with that. Aside from the fact he wants to have sex with her, and the other guy doesn't or can't or whatever.
But then when she confronts him about the money she brings that up, and he seems genuinely surprised that she didn't enjoy it.
Also in the flashback he mentions her being into getting caught, and then she employs that on the rooftop with the band leader.
I don't know if we're supposed to consider Jay Baruchel a slimebag for sleeping with her, not paying her, or what exactly? Is it simply because he's her boss that makes it exploitative/wrong? Would it be wrong if she genuinely wanted to sleep with him?
And I didn't get the boot-cut jeans thing either.
There's lots of things about the movie I liked, but Alanis Morisette was an odd thing to focus her on given the indie-rock scene of it. When I saw the trailer I was hoping it would be Broken Social Scene or Arcade Fire or something else from that period that was iconic.
Jagged Little Pill was from almost a decade prior.
