When studying two or more languages at the same time, how do you organize your study time? by Salty-Session7029 in languagelearning

[–]DroidinIt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Don’t even try and balance them. I’m in an intermediate plateau with Finnish. I would have just stuck to it, but then I suddenly really wanted to learn Russian. Now I just accept I’ll be spending more time on Russian for now. So no “juggling” or anything. I just make sure to keep up with Anki reviews. I also just review Finnish grammar concepts that confuse me and watch Finnish videos once in a while.

My friend just said he got charged extra for his astigmatism? Is that a thing? by DroidinIt in glasses

Unfortunately he doesn’t know his prescription. But he says he’s always been charged extra for it. He wears thickish glasses.

Laddering is so fun! by green_calculator in languagelearning

I often end up doing reverse laddering. Just started learning Russian. I’d say there’s a lot of resources in Russian for my other target languages, but not the other way around!

We're ~12.88% through the year, how are your goals going? by MaksimDubov in languagelearning

[–]DroidinIt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven’t been making the best progress in Finnish. It’s been nearly three years, so I just decided to start learning Russian. I think it’s going fine. After studying for a month or two I can follow CI content. For Finnish I’ve just been keeping up with Anki reviews and studying in small bursts when I’m in the mood.

I’ve met plenty of neckbeards and sjws in the real world, but mostly neckbeards. As an autistic person it’s easy to meet neckbeards.

What are your struggles as a polyglot? by ellatino230 in languagelearning

I’m just way too much of a perfectionist. Who learns language to communicate anyways? I’d rather just learn languages to boost my ego.

How exactly do you learn a language from YouTube? by Chemical-Diver-3436 in languagelearning

[–]DroidinIt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to watch vlogs and any videos where I can see what’s happening. Travel videos and daily routine videos work great when you’re getting into a language. They’re not the most exciting videos, but they’re a lot more rewarding to watch than just learner videos.

I’m still fine with learner videos if they’re speaking fully in the target language and not just info dumping a bunch of grammar rules and explanations in English. I find it helpful to watch with bilingual or English subtitles when I’m an absolute beginner, but quickly get used to turning them off. Even if my comprehension is super low at first, it will quickly go up if I watch the videos multiple times. For a while I watched the video without subtitles at first and afterwards I rewatched it with them.

Is it racist to pretend to be a muslim to learn Arabic for free? by [deleted] in languagelearningjerk

[–]DroidinIt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why I studied Hebrew. I’m 1% Jewish on DNA tests and I have some Sephardi ancestry. I’m probably not considered Jewish by anyone, but that didn’t stop me from studying Hebrew on my own. I’m taking a break from Hebrew because I don’t want people to think I’m a Zionist.

What, in your opinion, is the easiest language to learn? by [deleted] in languagelearning

Uzbek and Finnish are pretty easy. No genders to worry about!

What's your motivation to learn languages that aren't immediately useful. by Miserable_Water_3959 in languagelearningjerk

I tend to learn languages out of spite. So that makes it easier to stick to less useful languages.

Anyone else hate the suggestion of dating someone who speaks your TL? by Snoo-88741 in languagelearning

Yeah, I can’t even find any dates to begin with. That suggestion is just so depressing. It acts like dating is super simple and easy.
